The majority of innovation happened in making CPUs multicore.

which windows still hasn't really caught up with, they've been to busy breaking things that used to work.

Instead all innovation happened in increasing the power/capabilities of GPUs.

Kinda. CPU perf stalled mostly because they crossed the "compute power of the entire human race in one chip" threshold, more compute was easy to come by by adding more chips and the (investment) focus switched to making them smaller and more power efficient, innovation there by the likes of Apple and Samsung have been at least as important as GPU, probably more so.

AMD - very much like they did with x64 - recently stepped up to the plate and changed the paradigm again.

The key difference between a CPU and a GPU is a CPU is really good at logic - "if this then this that and the other."

Whereas a GPU does basically one task really well, multiply lots of groups of numbers together at the same time,  - and not much else.

GPU "innovation" has been all about adding logic into that (cuda, opencl), opening the door for more and more "if this then multiply these numbers else multiply these numbers" - aka shaders.

Don't think any of that disagrees with you, just gives it more "meat".

That kinda brings us up to now, where the average PC is much lower spec (but gets its performance by consuming much more power) than a $500 steam deck

Now, we are but a few short days away from FSEXPO, and I'm going to say I suspect many people are going to be disappointed and openly critical to a degree we haven't seen before.

That or we see graphics to compete with

Which wont be achievable on the vast majority of hardware people currently have, and they will be grumpy they have to:

If so these will be centered mostly on making the GPU pull more weight...which does not help if your GPU is already running against some stops with XP11.

I don't think there is much wrong with 11s graphics that can't be improved at that level.

Seasonal textures. More complete Autogen coverage of small and mid size towns with correct footprint. Better atmospherics etc.

I know what I have is mid spec for FS 2020.

Or you can sell a kidney and get a modern GPU 😆

I can't see that changing in the foreseeable future. The days of cheap consumer electronics and goods, food and energy are over. At least they are here in the UK. I count myself lucky to have seen the best of times. I fear for my grandchildren's future as the West goes mad and virtuously self destructs.

Just might have to do that with the out of this world GPU prices here in India , call 10-15 different vendors everyday and the pricing is just not right , even for used GPU it's as high as the original price for the same model new gpu , the new gpu pricing is 50% higher.  Thanks to the pandemic they are saying silicon shortage and the stupid miners wasting energy.

Not true. I've seen the advertised 25 to 30% jump in X-Plane benchmark FPS by going from a Ryzen 3700X to a Ryzen 5800X. A big part of this was achieved by AMD in Zen 3 chips by increasing the instructions per cycle and boost clock optimizations.

While peak clock speeds aren't really increasing due to power and heat constraints, there is still a lot of potential in smaller transistor spacing and low-level firmware side optimizations.

Yes. Little to no improvement 😉 (compared to the rough doubling of framerate every 2 years under Moore´s law we enjoyed until the advent of multicore processors)

Some would sell their spouse for that if it means getting those 60 FPS in VR.

Getting 60fps for VR is easy on pretty much any hardware...you just need to be ready to lower your rendering settings enough 😉

Hi,

Get on a list! A friend of mine just got his notice from EVGA a few days ago and how has a EVGA FTW3 3090 in his hands,  TWO DAYS after the notice for the price of $1,909.99. You'll have to wait, but you can get one without selling any organs.

I need three, so it's going to be a while!

Find it hard enough spending $600 on a card even when I have the money,  and until people stop buying them the prices will stay high, ridiculous, crazy, stupid, insane, mad. Did i leave any words out,,, Abortive.

thing is, $3000 for a GPU is "cheap" when a couple of years ago the linux render farms were paying $10,000 a pop for half the number of cuda cores.

Now they are also competing with Google stadia and microsoft launching xbox cloud gaming buying them in the 100s of thousands of units.

But lets just forget them and blame the cryptominers using asics for high gpu prices like everyone else.

That price is insane, even for a custom 3090.

And "get on a list and wait to get consumer good x" is a principle I considered extinct since around 1990...

the pricing here too is insane.   that's the reason i am looking at used gpu's , even for the used one's its insane.
