XP12 system requirements

The point is that whether you wanted too or not you couldn't. And therefore you could not use and enjoy 90% of the best available games, sims, programs etc etc. So why would anyone want Linux? I'm ready to be persuaded there is some killer advantage but at present I can't see one?

I don't think one would want to .

depends on what you want to do with Linux , for me it was only server based but i do have it dual boot on my laptop.  Not that i use it much now , even my desktop is dual boot , where i usually use XP in Linux , it just gives me a smoother experience.

And now W10 has a free digital license so..........

hardware sys requirements is the killer advantage.

windows doesnt stand a chance against a €350 steam deck which can outperform a €2000 windows pc build when no one cares about the OS.

a €500 xbox that has no VR support and cant run the worlds most advanced consumer flight simulator doesnt stand a chance against an fully mobile and dockable €350 steam deck that has VR and can run the worlds most advanced consumer flight simulator.

Exactly the same dynamics that killed windows mobile and windows server (garbage unperformant windows kernel that couldnt compete with the high performance low power consumption posix kernels of apple and google) is looking like it is about to start playing out in the "desktop gamer" space.

Looks like a Game Gear to me. Doubt it could even run Space Invaders.

Well if you think I'm going to wave one of those in front of my face like a ten year old you can think again.

"dockable"

i.e. you can plug it into your tv and plug all your home cockpit stuff into its usb ports, take it with you when you travel.

or better - forget the dock and plug it straight into your VR headset.

Cheap enough to give it a go I suppose. Don't think they are available here though?

I've been with you thus far mSparks but let's be realistic about the hardware we're discussing here.

The SteamDeck is nowhere remotely close to (I'd say not even in the same universe as) the latest XBox console.

Microsoft heavily subsidizes their hardware, Valve cannot.

This is a hardware kit meant for running downscaled PC games as a handheld.

Anywhere. it launches in december and there looks like a pretty big waiting list (into q2 2022)

But yes - exactly.

A lot will ride on how that launch goes and how people respond to it when they get it.

There is going to be - both for XP12 and kit like that a period of pain where things dont work as expected, especially because AMD PC graphics drivers are currently sketchy.

If reading rather than hands on video is more your thing

In absolute specs true.

But they are very solid specs "gaming laptop" range. Quite a bit higher than the msfs min specs.

  • CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32)
  • GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32)
  • RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels)
  • Storage: 64GB eMMC base, 256GB and 512GB NVMe PCIe Gen 3 SSDs available
  • Size: 11.7" long x 4.6" tall x 1.9" thick
  • Weight: 1.47 pounds
  • Screen: 7" 1280x800 (16:10) 60Hz LCD
  • Audio: 3.5mm stereo jack
  • Battery: 40WHr estimated 2 - 8 hours
  • Video output (docked): up to 4K 120Hz / 8K 60Hz (game performance at these often resolutions remains to be seen)
  • Ports (dock included): microSD card expansion, USB 2.0 and 3.1, HDMI, DisplayPort
  • Connectivity:  2.4GHz / 5GHz Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0
  • Gyro: 2.4GHz / 5GHz Wifi, Bluetooth 5.0

matched with highly optimised linux perf to actually leverage to cpu (where it really matters) and it should really be the "awesome" as per the vid on page 2.

This video

was made on a gtx1070, that 8 CU 1.6hgz gpu in the steam deck should be more than able to keep up with that if not exceed it for scene complexity.

definitely not going to be running on maxxed out settings, but I fully expect it to give a "good" experience on xp12, which is more than can be said for any windows pc - let alone laptop - at twice the price.

The big unknown here is the fact this is the first time any of us has seen this architecture potentially done right.

An off the shelf PC with those specs definitely couldn't do even the simplest scenes at 4K 120hz (hence the justified skepticism in that spec quote). But this isnt an off the shelf PC, its a gaming engine made by surely the most successfully games company there is using hardware we have never had our hands on before.

First chance to see how

actually plays out in a commercial head to head.

I reckon it plays out exactly the same way as the server and mobile markets a decade ago.

Why won't my Windows PC give me a good experience with XP12?? I'm hoping it will! It seems to give me a good experience with everything else?

To be fair, my Windows PC gives me an instant crash to desktop with MSFS 2020 when I click "Fly Now".

I'm a senior software engineer now in direct contact with engineers on the other side.

I'm 100% serious here, no fanboyism.

It has to be a real concern to LR to manage not only the upgrade, but the support fall-out from it, with a small team.
