I'm sure once this current problem of the virus goes the way of the 1918 flu or polio supply and manufacturing systems and therefor pricing will return to normal. But I have great fun doing air work with A2A birds.

My current system is more than up to that.

Reading about those prices, suddenly a new iMac or Mac mini become very attractive. And I am not an Apple fan, far from it.

That's what I said when it was suggested I get a MacBook Pro for dev work, in January of 2019.  

Unless I have to test things, I haven't gone back to Windows, and don't plan to.

Now I have a whole Apple ecosystem.

It's one of those things where if you get your first one, you get hooked.  At least for most people.

Was 2003 for me... got one of those 17" Powerbooks and have never gone back to PCs since unless it's for gaming.

My boss wife uses Mac's only , max life 3-4 years , just yesterday they sent the mac 2018 to the office the piece of word not allowed shuts down

Max life depends on what goes wrong.  We still have my daughters MacBook Air from grade school.  She's now in the tail end of her 3rd year in high school.  I bought her a new MBA, but we still use her old one.  Granted, we had to change the battery pack, but other than that, it still runs great.

So, is a Macbook M1 able to run even XP11 at 4K@30fps+ with ortho and complex add-ons? I would be surprised if it did...

well i have non-mac laptops from 10 years working fine , if it was only once that her macbookpro gets a problem it would be different but not all of them , they have also got a M1 Macbookpro for their kid. Ofc that M1 is lightening fast no doubt.  repair costs are huge , her earlier macbookpro had a wifi issue the replacement cost came to 10k INR that's very high for a wifi card. 

would love to own macbook too , in fact the Toshiba laptop had become my hackintosh and worked like a charm but went back to windows / linux dual boot.

I have sent 3 of her macbookpros for repairs and this I believe is the 4th one. 

My non-mac laptops last me years , still using my trusty 2012 Toshiba.

No, doubt it... I have the last Macbook Pro i9 model and whilst it can run X-Plane with complex scenery addons, it's certainly not what I'd call smooth. Sadly, the GPUs in these laptops have never been anything special.

That is too broad a statement to answer properly.

What exact specs are you basing it on?  What plugins?  What zoom level?  What add ons?  What Render Settings?

Although I don't know specifics, I know some developers who have an M1 MBP, and they say X-Plane runs better on an M1 MBP than on their Intel MBP.  It's not easy to compare between other users, because everyone has different specs and X-Plane plugins.

Well the problem is that my most used add-ons are not even compatible with the Mac, so that is hard to compare. In any case, I can hardly believe that such a machine is comparable with a good quality PC.

For instance, the M1 16" with a Radeon 5500M costs 3200 Euro. My seconds rig with a 3060Ti costed much less than that and I am pretty sure that the performance on XP11 would be better.

Forgot to mention...the other thing I was told to get with my MBP was an eGPU.  5700XT.  Definite improvement.  And I found out that X-Plane detects the eGPU automatically.  No need to add the checkmark in "prefer eGPU".

I even asked Sidney about this, and I believe his response was, "Yes, it works!".  Apparently, not many MBP users use eGPU's, so he couldn't get any feedback from the regular simmers.

My point is thats no different for flight sim. Its just much much much harder to achieve, next gen makes it much easier.

I come back to lighting because that is one key example where rendering could be made efficient. Use a render farm to compute all the shadows and reflections for a single time of day and bake them into the textures, throw in a ton of excess AO to make up for the lack of shadowing elsewhere.

The other part, is the world is just to big for an art team to build, so the art team makes autogen, and the programming guys deploy it - most flight sims never even get an art team.

Xplanes dsf format already solved the other problems, which is why airports like OrbXs EGCB looks almost as good as Ride 3, save the hard limits caused by the terrible trees and vegitation in XP11
