The Prepar3d Forum

  1. Just had an interesting experience. I was running some tests at KCGS near Washington DC in the Carenado A36 - mainly testing different combinations of autogen and shadows. At some point I loaded real world weather from Opus 3.36.1. We're at the tail end of a big coastal storm, so weather was overcast with rain. As soon as Opus weather loaded, frames fell from the mid-30's to around 10. In several subsequent tests, every time I loaded Opus, performance suffered. Even with lower autogen and no shadows, when I loaded Opus weather, I got microstutters, even when frames held around 20.     I was looking forward to P3D 2.0 for two reasons: no more autogen popping up and SHADOWS! Now I notice a lot of people turn them off because they aren't good for performance, but you can tweak that (see this topic: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/427529-simple-solution-for-shadows-and-loss-of-fps-or-the-tweaking-has-begun/ ). However, there are also people who say shadows aren't that important. Well, I think they make a world of difference when it comes to immersion. They make everything look more real. Well, imho.   7. So I went into this upgrade thinking I was good, I'm not. I'm running a GTX460 Video Card, 6 core Phenom AMD processor and 16 gigs of ram. However I can't get close to the Display Settings I acheieved on FSX, Although some load has been shifted to the GPU I am still gettting a maxxed out CPU. The DUKE b60 was horribly choppy, however the defualt AC on start up ran fair. I am currently redesigning my system until then its FSX.

    So, with the great sales going on, I thought I'd give a trial run of FSDT's CYVR - seeing as how I think I have the horsepower to run it in P3D. But at a certain altitude I get ground flickers like crazy. Nothing going on that should affect it - I even disabled the default CYVR just in case. Heck, this sim hasn't been on my hard drive long enough to have acquired any other scenery that would affect this. Looking at the manual, it recommends setting mesh resolution to 5m, and mesh complexity to 100... however in P3Dv2 there is no mesh complexity slider. Does anyone have this installed and working in P3Dv2? Any flashing ground textures above 1000 ft or so?

    Hi All, I know it may be early days, as the sim is only few days "old", but would there be any advantage to convert airplane textures from DXT1/3/5 to DDS? Based on my (hopefully not faulty) observation over the years is that FS9 used DXT format, whereas FSX moved to DDS, and I presume same with P3D. If so, what would be the absolute correct DDS format to convert to specifically for planes? I did a few trials with FSX some time ago, converting DXT textures to DDS on some planes, and to be honest I did see a slight positive impact on frames, and also the fact that certain textures simply displayed better after conversion.     Is it ok to install P3D on the same drive as FSX? We all know FSX is a PITA to install, and I just spent 2 weeks installing everything from scratch when I built my new rig about a month ago. I imagine jumping on the P3D bandwagon sometime early next year, can I just add P3D to my FSX drive, which presently uses only 14% of available space?

    Hi, I tried moving some scenery I'd installed up the list in the scenery library and it just disappeared from the list. There is a gap in the scenery numbers on the right but no name in the list anymore. The scenery has also disappeared from Prepar3d when I go to that airport... I tried reinstalling but that didn't work. Trying to add the scenery back in manually doesn't work either. Does anyone know a way of re-compiling this list? I tried deleting the Scenery.cfg in the Roaming folder and also a tool I found on the web. Neither have worked. It looks like I need to reinstall Prepar3d? I hope not!

    Hi Guys, I think I have discovered an anomilie on the Saitek switch panel. When I load the default flight (Mooney) I can turn on every switch via the Saitek switch panel except the battery master...If I then switch planes to my Carenado C152 it is the same. I have tested the switch panel in FSX and it works fine... Any body else have this problem, any ideas?? Dave

  13. I just noticed that two of my FSX data folders were replaced by those from P3D v2. Luckily, whatever caused them to be replaced also created a backup of the FSX folders being replaced. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem or if anyone knows what caused it and how to avoid it in the future. One of the folders that was replaced was the folder that contains the fsx.cfg file, which is the FSX folder in the App Data folder. The other folder that was replaced was the folder that contains the scenery.cfg file, which is the FSX folder in the Program Data folder.     So I upgraded to the Radeon R7 260x 2GB GDDR5 Card today and now I'm getting a message that states "this graphics card does not meet minimum requirements for shader support" I didn't get this message with my old Geforce before the upgrade. Seems to me I ran into this awhile back with FSX Gold.. Any ideas, DirectX11 is installed.

    My PC has an Intel Core 2 Duo 3Ghz CPU, 4 Gb RAM, an HP w1907v monitor running at1440 x 900, and a GeForce GT 520 with 1Gb memory. And yes, I know it's inadequate! I've just installed P3D and has re-install FSX from scratch for I thought I'd also re-install FS9 as well to get an out-of-the-box comparison with default settings and no add-ons. For comparison I chose the common default Beechcraft Kingair and Heathrow airport. I got the following frame rates with them limited to 60 fps: FS9 60 fps FSX 30 - 35 fps P3D 4 - 6 fps

    I'm trying to get a good balance between visibility and the distance where the autogen is generated. I have noticed that other people say that autogen appears so foreign the distance compared to their invisibility setting that they don't really notice its appearance. In the video below I have set the LOD to ultra, and also maximised the scenery complexity and autogen. I'm using Opus for the weather, and in the weather settings I have selected a surface visibility of 32 km (if I remember correctly, at this it was one of the lower values).     Hi All, Just tried out the SweetFX addon having edited the HDR settings and has made some nice visual changes that looks quite nice. As a simple option I have increased the brightness and contrast of my monitor which has also brightened up the screen when using HDR.     In the Object Placement tool with FSX, you could save a "scenery" xml file which could be compiled with bglcomp. Can the same be done with SimDirector? I only see an option for mission files (xml) and these don't compile with bglcomp. Thanks!

  23. I noticed when benchmarking and tuning my settings that P3D2 by default only used three of my four i7 2700K cores. I had to insert the AffinityMask=15 tweak to get all four cores working to the max as they do in P3D1.4. Just a head's up!

  25. I have a “large” FSX installation I would like to migrate to P3Dv2 but have some constraints. What would be the best migration strategy? a ) My FSX files take up 1.5 TB and is still growing.......... b ) My main FSX drive (1TB SSD is nearly full) and am moving/installing photo-scenery to a future additional 1TB SSD. c ) I would like to avoid actually 'installing' my aircraft and scenery...both due to time, and trying to avoid doubling space consumption.................because – 300+ payware aircraft, 800+ freeware aircraft, 350+ payware sceneries.
