FLY for Mac Users Forum
If you are a Macintosh owner and use FLY, then this is the forum for you!
Lake Tahoe September, 2002 |
This forum and all others related to the FLY series of flight simulator, are dedicated to the memory of Richard Harvey - the lead designer for Terminal Reality's Fly.
At the AVSIM FANCON of 2002, Richard and his wife, Tara, attended. Richard was presented with AVSIM's Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the flight simulation genre and his outstanding service and support of the FS community. Richard was a friend to many of us, and never hesitated to assist and inspire. Richard passed away the following March, 2003. He is sorely missed by his friends and those that were privileged to know him.
Richard in his last post to the forums said; "Try to stay away from things that are dark, dreary, introspective, tear jerkers, etc. Think HAPPY -- be HAPPY. If that is too much to ask, then I'll change the word HAPPY to POSITIVE. That's the flow of feeling I want rolling through my soul as I depart this earth from each of you, is absolute POSITIVE energy. Don't stall on me, I have to soar!"
Richard also passed this along to us in his last post; "******* Christ is my Lord and Savior. As my loving God and Lord has protected and guided me throughout my life, I pray he will do likewise for you and your family. May each of you achieve your dreams, and not be troubled by hardships. I pray for your good health. God will only give you as much load as you can bear, and never any more. Do not lose hope, nor certainly faith. Above all, do not fear evil, for though it surrounds us it can never hurt us. It may claim hollow victories, but it always suffers defeat."
We are proud to carry on Richard's undaunted support for his passion and his unstinting support of the user. Welcome to the Richard Harvey Memorial Fly Forums! |

Whether you're a new or long-time user of Fly! II, if you haven't tried one or all of the many great add-ons yet, you're definitely missing out. Some of the ones I use are: Real_Sky3 by Ivan Aiello, Clouds by Jure Dolanec, Improved Sectional Charts by Rob Westhouse, Flyhawk Interim Fix By Rob Young, Fly_Tweaks by M. Rapczynski, Biber's Models Pack by Biber Salsa, and Fly! II Sound Enhancement Package by Leon "pancreas" Medado. These, plus all the repaints available, can greatly enhance your the Fly! II experience. You can find them right here in the AVSIM library. Now, if we could only get Terrascene to work on a Mac... Rich@KLEWBeige G3 233 MHz DT rev.1 G4 400 MHz NewerTe…

Hello Mac usersa few days ago I've got the new ATI Radeon 8500 for my G4/400 Mac and I hoped to see a notable increase of frame rates. While in Fly2k the frame rates vary now between 10 - 20 fps, the improvement in Fly!2 is near to zero compared with my old ATI 16 mb RAGE card, - that is fps between 5 and 15 fps, ... and the new card has 64 mb!! (By the way, I alloted about 800 MB RAM to Fly!)On OSX, the card is recognised as "ATI RADEON 8500" but the fps do not exceed 5 fps (!?), on OS9.2.2 it is recognised as "ATI 3D Rage Open GL Engine" inFLY2 and as"Rave compatible" in Fly2k. Does anybody know if this is correct? My biggest problem however is that in Fly 2k the airplan…

Has anyone ever compiled a .dll using sdk.h ? It seem that this header doesn't respond to Ansi rules, and has been set for Microsoft Visual C. In MPW as in Codewarrior, I have many errrors and am suspecting that the "int" treatment differs from Apple rules, so the instruments reading will be buggy. Very, very difficult to port to Mac the dlls code source which are also using Microsoft products.

Just wanted to share this bit of news I saw posted at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ and also at http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/top_news_item.cfm?NewsID=4522Company Announces (PC) DirectX to MacOS Porting Software - At first I thought this was an april-fools, but a reader noted that Macworld yesterday had an article about a company called Coderus that says they have developed "MacDX" (Direct-X Interface for MacOS) that allows easy porting of PC DirectX based games to the Mac (only the original source code for the game is needed according to the article.)If this is for real, it would mean many PC titles could be ported to the mac for far less cost (and more quickly). That's a…

While in external views, and visible only at a certain angle, I've noticed this mysterious rotating octagon shadow slowly drift by on the ground after starting Fly! II. Must be some kind of bug. Hey Folks,Ken Salter started a CPU poll in the main forum and kindly included "Apple" as a choice. As of the time of this posting, there are only four Apple votes among 85 responses.Come on! I know there are more of us than four, unless Franklin has a bunch of alter egos registered :)Let's get some Apple votes in there -- it could be important when developers start new Fly! projects and need to find out if Mac support is appropriate! With the new forum system, voting takes only a mouse-click. Unfortunately, the system limits voting to once per person. Darned! Having grown up in Texas during the LBJ years, I was ready to click several times! :-lol

I saw a post from last month that indicated you were in need of a Mac to hopefully do some improvements to Fly! II, and noted that you might be receiving a loner. Did this ever materialize? If not (or if so, but you still have a need for it), I'd like to offer the use of my G4/867/GeForce3 to you. No, I'm not crazy. This is a machine that I purchased several months ago, but due to major house renovations that leave me with no place to set it up, it has been sitting in a closet unused.I would say that this will continue to be the case for at least another month or so, maybe longer (I've got the framing done for my new office, and am waiting on the electrical work, after …

Does any one else have a "NON-ADJUSTABLE HEADING INDICATOR"? I've got the preference "on" for gyroscopic precession so that occasionally you must adjust the H.I. to match the magnetic compass, but one problem...the knob turns but it has no effect on the H.I. card (does not turn). Can I fix this in fly.ini? PLEASE HELP

Is it just me...or has there been very little in the line of library add-ons for Fly & FlyII lately?I can understand why I am not seeing library additions for Fly (even though many of us can NOT run FlyII), but why have there been so little add-ons for FlyII lately? Is the sim dieing? or Are people just waiting around for FlyIII?---John R. Quick question for the group:I have fly2k(great)/flyII(unusable) for my imac (400DVSE) and have recently discovered the fun of terrascene and terramodels on a PC at my office (if you have never used either, find one and try them out! You will be amazed at the level of programming that the add-on community is putting out!) Terrascene can make scenery for both version of fly but Terramodels 2.0 does not make scenery for fly2k. This is only possible with Terramodels 1.0 which requires the fly edit application. I am told this came with PC version and not mac, does anyone know if this is the case and if there is a mac substitute? Thanks!Ben

I run Fly2k with a logitech wingman digital extreme 3d that I found on the net new for $8.00, works great (gameport but came with free usb adapter). I am now looking for rudder pedals and wanted to know if anyone has experience mixing thrustmaster pedals with other brands of sticks? Does anyone out there use the elite pedals with a mac? Thanks!!BC

I'm using a Mac G3/500 (525MHz) with plenty of everything, except a serious graphics card (which I plan to update someday). I'm not having any problems with the full (stock) 6MB VRAM that I have now on a Rev.3 logicboard. But as I sift through the many, many posts here at AVSIM, it seems to me as though this is more serious than I had expected. It appears as though "gamers" don't have a place here... which is fine with me, because I don't want to "play games" as much as I want to learn to fly - so that's cool. But as I sift through all the posts, it seems to be more in the way of "progammers" programming and reconfiguring the software to manipulate for their desires... wh…

I've been a mac user for 12 years (because my field only uses macs, which is fine.) and have been an avid flightsim freak for about 3 years. After the first year, I made the observation that macs will never never never be on the same playing field as the PC in terms of flightsims. That is just the way it is, and it will never change. It is all about sales, and there just aren't enough mac flightsimmers to justify the time to make a mac version of FLYII/MSFS with all the addons. So, that said, I am looking into buying a pc. This would only be for simming and nothing else. I would assume it is much cheaper to make one rather than buy one from Dell, Compaq, gateway etc. But …

What are the differences between "Fly!", "Fly! II", and "FLY! 2K"?I would like to upgrade/update the version that I have, if at all possible. I want to get a Piper Warrior and more maps of the Southeast (or anywhere in the United States) in addition to the standard.I have tried to download from some web site, but after registering, all I got were windows and no downloads. I am new to this discussions board and relatively new to Fly!2K, any help here would be greatly appreciated!Thank you for flying with Mac-Air"Happy Mac-Flying!"

Hi.This is my very first (or maiden) post on this site, so I'd like to introduce myself and say hello to the person who recommended that I come here.My real name is Jon Lamont. I'll go by the name (here) of "Sapphire Mk II" because that's what started all of this. The "Sapphire Mk II" is an Australian built ultralight that is currently manufactured by Steven Dumesny, of SAA. The Sapphire is the one that I've chosen to purchase, and is one that launched me into earning my PPL (Private Pilots License). After "thinking" that no-experience was neccessary for one of these and speaking with Steven in Australia, I soon realized that, that would be a serious mistake, and that…

The latest ATI Radeon update is now available. Here is the link:http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/mac/mac...002-update.htmlGraphics seem to be a little smoother. I don't see any mention of FSAA. No problems so far.Pete

For as long as I've had Fly!2k the sound has always been choppy and stutters during flight... especially when adjusting the throttle or the pitch. IE: basically whenever the speed of the plane changes. Now I've tried it on 3 different macs and it happens with all of them. I usually allocate around 350mb's of physical ram to Fly. I'm running the sound at 16bit Stereo. I haven't tried mono yet or 8bit but I want to avoid those if possible. Just wondering if anyone else has sound problems in 16bit stereo? Thanks,Kevin.

I need a new joystick with the following:-built in throttle-twist grip rudder control-POV hat switch-must be USB-wont burn a hole in my wallet ;-) I used to have a Saitek Cyborg 3D. My last stick was a Logitech Wingman Digital Extreme 3D. The Logitech was good except for the fact that it was too sensitive/loose and caused major control problems in some other games. I was thinking about the Micro$oft Sidewinder. Does this work on a Mac with the USB? The Logitech stick was a Windows only, but it worked through the Mac's HID sprocket. What do you people use? Let me know what you think about the Sidewinder-Greg :-shy formerly tf39

Hi, I hope someone can help me wtih this... This post will be fairly long as I've done extensive testing (aka messing around) so I can provide exact details and I hope it will all make sense.Under OS9.0.4 (or under) Fly!2k works perfect.Under OS9.1 (or higher) Fly!2k always crashes in the GUI.Here's the specifics. Whenever I click a button in the GUI or in the options it crashes with error type 3 (illegal instruction). It's definately a mouse thing because if I use the keyboard I can successfully get into the cockpit and then the mouse works fine (everything works). It's only in the GUI that this happens. Normally I'd just use the keyboard at this stage and forget the mou…
