Hangar Chat
This forum is for the discussion of things you might discuss when going into an airport hangar. Please make sure that your topic isn't covered in another forum before posting here. I once met Joe Foss at a Confederate Air Force air show in Midland Texas. He had a table where he was selling his book. I asked him to sign the centerfold of the air show program and he signed it to a 'Fellow Marine'. I had it framed and it hung on a wall in my den until I sent it to my granddaughter who is the collector of all the family's artifacts. https://www.militarytimes.com/veterans/military-history/2026/01/10/the-ace-of-aces-this-marine-corps-aviator-shot-down-23-enemy-planes/ When I joined the Confederate Air Force I was sworn in by retired General Tibbets who flew the Enola Gay an…

I can remember as a teenager (a long time ago!) listening from eastern Canada to flights over the North Atlantic. They used shortwave frequencies that varied based on time of day and time of year. I also sort of remember hearing flight over North Africa. What happens today? Can a/c communicate with ATC over the Atlantic somehow? ATC software simulates ATC in that area but I keep wondering if it's lying to me. Jean-Pierre Gagné

IMHO it’s important to participate in these things as developers are known to pay attention to the results. And it’s always better to vote than just take what comes later on. 😉 info & link to survey: https://www.thresholdx.net/news/fsaw26

Unlike other craft of the era, there was no steam power. The driving power was all pretty mysterious. Andrews had already a string of successful inventions, including a padlock that the government purchased in great numbers and used by the post office department. It was 1864 when President Lincoln called for a demonstration of the airship but the war was over too quickly and none were purchased. Andrews advertised a schedule from Philadelphia to New York City in 1866. An economic depression bankrupted his company after only 2 flights. This reminded me of something I always mused about as a kid when reading stories about modern people somehow transported far into the past. Often stories will simply add a few "Thees" and "Thou's" and tada, transplanted folk can communicate easily. That always struck me as iffy, and this is a perfect demonstration of why.
