New MSFS 2024 Trailer - Release date: 11/19/2024

The trailer looks fantastic.

Hoping that existing FS2020 owners of various add-ons like myself will receive a discount for the FS2024 version of those add-ons.

Does anyone know if Microsoft will make their weather API available/'unlocked' in FS2024 so that e.g. Hifi or Rex or other third party developers can use this for their weather add ons in a more enhanced way?

Last year they've said all add-ons will be compatible with 2024, and everything purchased on the marketplace will be carried over to the new simulator. I guess 3rd party selling outside the marketplace will do the same. What 3rd party devs might charge is for updated versions, with the newest features. Like an aircraft updated with new features and/or new flight model.

  • I'm really tired of this argument. You don't want missions? Fine, just do your thing as you used to. No one calls DCS an arcade platform even though it has plenty of missions, so why say that about MS

The missions look fun, but thats not what im into.  That thunderstorm didnt look any better than fs2020, I would have liked to see more about the weather and flight model.  The clouds and sky look no better than what I am used to from 2020.

Much to like, the improved terrain, the lighting in the A400 shot particularly, but the clouds are a little underwhelming. There are signs of high level cloud types, but not sure there's anything 2020 can't do in presets.

Pleased, but not as blown away as I was hoping to be.

The increased tree variation in this comparison shot is nice. And the stream also looks so much better.  One thing that annoys me about MSFS 2020 is there is only so much tree variation and only so much vegetation variation.

Don't get me wrong, what came out in MSFS in 2020 was revolutionary for trees and vegetation for a flight simulator, compared to what was available at the time. But I hope MSFS 2024 takes it to a whole new level.

Still very early and probably need more information to really tell for sure, but yes from what I've seen 100% agree - clouds and atmosphere are to a pilot as an ocean is to a fish - it's where we "live". I'm glad they are going all in on the terrain but we need a a overhaul on the clouds and FS24 does not appear to be delivering in that department. Anyone else notice that the "scientific research" (with that strange looking tornado) is missing from this latest trailer? Me thinks they still cannot produce any different clouds than MSFS2020 - but again maybe too early to really tell. Maybe they are saving more for the upcoming announcement venues still to come?

Otherwise looks good. Lighting is improved. Clouds are *not*.

Way too detailed for an AI model.

I disagree

The weather API could change yet, didn't Jorg say that they need to have a meeting with MeteoBlue sometime soon?

Yep, clouds look like the 2020 version.

Fingers crossed that the MSFS2024  build shown in the trailer is still using old(er) content and that work is progressing on better weather depiction, but isn't ready to be shown off yet.

Release date is still 5 months away.

Completely agree.

Weather makes a flight sim come alive. I've bought two different third party weather add-ons and added preset weather mods in an attempt to address where the sim falls short.

If the cloud and weather engine isnt capable of doing this, the only saving grace for me will be the new physics engine quite frankly. Development of the sky should place far higher priority over ground development in a flight sim. In my opinion.

They did show off tornados before. So im atleast hoping theres much we havent seen about weather.

All I remember from FSX / P3D is that I could barely play the sim when some cloud types were present so they must be a hard nut too crack performance-wise.  Good luck to them to gets the clouds right though.

Thank you for your comparison shots.....really appreciate it.

Just remember that we are being shown what Microsoft wants us to see. And it's a wrong assumpting to think that what we see will be all around the world.

But i am sure we'll know more about it in some months with new discovery videos emerging.

Nah, I do have a major beef with how they were downgraded SU5/7, but they're still the best of any platform considering performance / visuals across presets and live.

My beef in the trailer is that the underlying tech doesn't seem to have changed. But there are definitely signs of more variations, so will wait for the Expo presentation.
