Austria’s Hills are Alive with the Sound of Aeroplanes (LOAN-LOWS) For August 27, 2022 Michael MacKuen We take a Saturday morning to fly over the Austrian Alps. We have flown in this region often and much will be familiar. Our emphasis today is to take our GA aircraft up over the mountains while staying low enough so that we may enjoy the “peak” experience. We spend most of our time visiting small airports of the aeroclub variety. Some are grass and others asphalt. While these are not landing challenges, pilots will notice that many of the fields are fairly short and that some attention might be needed to execute a safe landing. To celebrate two of Austria’s current…

Kiel Canal Bridge Inspection and Schleswig-Holstein Tour This flight will lead us around the German State of Schleswig-Holstein. One of the world's most frequented waterways is the Kiel Canal (German: Nord-Ostsee Kanal, until 1948 Kaiser Wilhelm Kanal) with about 32.000 ships (90 per day). When using the canal ships save about 250 nautical miles instead of going around Denmark and the Skagerak and Kattegat. We will overfly the canal from Brunsbüttel to Kiel and inspect every bridge! The departure airport is Hamburg-Finkenwerder (EDHI), home of one of the Airbus plants. We follow the river Elbe for a couple of miles and land at Uetersen (EDHE), a small…

Trigger Alert! There are NO waypoints on this flight. The flight this Saturday, should you wish to partake, begins in North Brasil and will follow the upstream path of the Orinoco. or is it the Zambesi? Something like that. We shall discover the ancient ruins of the Roman velodrome and the sunken city of Machu pichu, where the first English settlers Brought peace and prosperity to people who didn't know they needed it. Although the river is wide and deep, water landings are not to be encouraged due to piranha and anacondas. A Kodiak or some such would be a prudent choice of aircraft, largely because the plane comes with 400 liveries saving time and angst for a…

Norway Below the Arctic Circle (ENBO-ENML) For August 17, 2022 Michael MacKuen We continue our southward voyage below the Arctic Circle. This is still pretty far north: at the end we shall be about level with Nome, Fairbanks, Yellow Knife and Iqaluit. We are not far below the Arctic Circle. We begin at Bodø [ENBO]. The facility began its present structure as a post-WWII Royal Norwegian Air Force base which became the core site for the defense of Norway’s northern air space. Starting in 1955 it flew fighter jets, from F-84s to F-86s to F-104s to F-16s that comprise the main combat force here today. Bodø supports the headquarters for the military north. In parallel…

Seaplanes in Norway We will visit 12 seaplane bases in Norway. We depart from Vigra (ENAL), since waiting for everybody to join is easier on a hard surface than floating about somewhere. We make our first water landing at the Bunker Oil Station (EN226), recheck that your gear is up before attempting the landing. Following the fjords and valleys, we land at Tannstad (EN225), Hellesylt (EN221), Geiranger (EN222), Breiddalsvatnet Øst (EN045), Stry Sjøflyhavn (EN133), and Utvik (EN217) before landing on a hard surface again at Sandane Anda (ENSD). Now you may want to check, that the gear is down… After relaxing a short while we continue and visit Dampen Se…

Scramble in the South of England For August 6, 2022 Michael MacKuen Today we do something different. A Scramble. And we celebrate a delightful event. This week, England won its second major international football championship when the women’s national team won the European Championship over an excellent and determined German squad. The mass psychology of this turn of fortune was wonderful to see. We start at London City [EGLC] with a leg that salutes Wembley Stadium, the site of the 1966 World Cup and the 2022 European Championship. Our final destination is unknown. The Scramble Setup The “instigator” takes the lead by announcing the initial departure airport t…

The North Cape to Lofoten (ENHV-ENLK) For July 27, 2022 Michael MacKuen The Summer is starting to fade and it is time for all fliers to head south. We travel down the Norwegian coastal islands from the North Cape to the Lofoten Islands. Although going south, we have no worries about a heat wave because we remain north of the Arctic Circle. This is an opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the rugged coastline with its many islands and inlets and picturesque fishing villages. Six of our stops are along the classic Hurtigruten cruise line famous for its scenic beauty. We depart from Honningsvag Valen [ENHV] with its short runway and terrain-mandated curved ap…

The Scarlet Pipistrel in Slovenia (LJAJ-LJPZ) For July 20, 2022 Michael MacKuen A special invitation from the Scarlet Pipistrel in Slovenia: Let’s have some fun in light sport aircraft. We shall explore the forested hills and alpine mountains of Slovenia. This small country (about 2.1 million people) has long been at the crossroads of Slavic, Germanic and Romance cultures. And the territory has been ruled as part of many larger states, most recently the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. After WWII it became part of Tito’s Socialist Yugoslavia. In 1991 it split from Yugoslavia and became an independent state and became a member of the EU and a fairly prosperous society. …

During this flight, we will visit some of the POI included in the Simulator World Update for Italy and Malta. We depart from Naples International Airport (LIRN) and start a tour around the city. Naples is Italy’s third-largest city (after Rome and Milan) and is one of the world's oldest, continuously inhabited urban areas. The city has many attractions, some of the most famous are the Roman ruins of Pompeji and Herculaneum, a couple of miles southeast of the city, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. These cities were destroyed 79 AD when Mout Vesuvius erupted. After take-off, we turn south and visit three castles, a museum, and a palace, overfly the city, and…

Welcome to the Texas Hill Country! The Hill Country is considered to be the crossroads where West Texas, Central Texas and South Texas come together. On a national level, it’s often thought of as the border between the American Southwest and Southeast. One distinguishing characteristic of the Hill Country is its karst topography, which is formed by the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone. This creates vast underground drainage systems such as sinkholes, caves and aquifers. The Edwards Aquifer, one of the most prolific artesian aquifers in the world, provides drinking water for about 2 million people in the Hill Country. The region’s numerous cave…

Today I thought we celebrate The Summer solstice and fly in some hot conditions. We start in the western part of Nevada and finish in California's death Valley. I tried to make a different route to showoff the beauty of the sim. With the heat this should be changeling. Ill be in a 310 or Arrow. There a little bit of climbing but its not too bad. Most of us have all the scenery already except maybe Darwin. You will also need the libraries listed bellow but not necessary. If we want we could change to Few Clouds or Scattered and turn up the heat to about 98 to add some really nice shadows across the desert. Flight time about 4pm. Flight Plan: HERE Needed Scenery:…

Sorry about the title, imagination has deserted me. Basically it's a flight from the west side to the north east side. There are some mountains, the odd lake or two and a quirky little airfield where the Italian Air Force forgot where they left one of their F104s All the airports are hard runways and easy to find except for those in the lumpier part of Italy. Keep 'em peeled! Aircraft in the 140-150ish cruise. I'll probably go Turbo Arrow Brief history of the area: Well known for the Romans, (what have they ever done for us?) Ferrari, (famous for being red) Versace (whatever?) and military hats with lots of feathers. Oh, and for mislaying F104s F…

Finland’s Midnight Sun (EFTU-EFIV) For Saturday, June 18, 2022 Michael MacKuen We shall enjoy an evening flight north through Finland to the summer’s midnight sun. Finland is a sparsely populated (5 million) land that has been an economic success story over the post war years. For five hundred years it was Sweden’s eastern province. But Russia won the Finnish War of 1808 and made Finland part of the Russian empire. For the last hundred years, it has been independent somewhere in between Russia and Europe. We shall visit a number of regions to get a sense of the country’s overall layout. We include the southern coast, the eastern Lakeland, and then the more remote Lap…

Jetting over the Stans - A Silk Road Journey We will tour many historical cities along the Silk Road in this journey visiting cites in four “Stans”. We start in Turkmenbat in Turkmenistan. Crossing the Amu Darya (Oxus) we enter Uzbekistan and our first stop is the ancient Silk Road trade city of Bukhara. The route proceeds east to Samarkand (one of the oldest inhabited cities in Central Asia). Next we follow the Zeravshan river into Tajikistan. Zeravshan means "spreader of gold" in Persian, and refers to the presence of gold-bearing sands in the upper reaches of the river. Surrounded by high mountain ridges we follow the valley of the river down to the “in…
