Warbirds Scramble over Wanaka For February 25, 2023 Michael MacKuen We shall have some fun flying warbirds over New Zealand’s South Island. And in the process, we shall get a quick look a the new World Update scheduled for Thursday, February 23, 2023. We shall start at Wanaka [NZWF] which hosts the famous biennial “Warbirds over Wanaka” airshow. This will be a Scramble where the participating pilots will choose the route toward the final destination. This event will be slightly more “structured” than those in the past. Because we want to get a look at the scenery, we might try to get to some of the new stuff. This includes Milford Sound [NZMF] and Lake Tekapo [NZ…

During the Cold War, NATO had a Command called Allied Forces Baltic Approaches (BALTAP). The Command was in Karup, Denmark. It consisted of Danish and German armed forces and was deactivated in 2002. Today, this area is in many ways very interesting. During the Cold War, Sweden was, of course, not part of that command, but things are changing. And Sweden is an important factor, from the Skagerak through to the Baltic Sea. We depart from Nordholz (ETMN), the only remaining airbase of the German Navy. P3C Orions MPA and various helicopters are stationed here, organized in two Naval Air Wings. Our first landing is at Schleswig (ETNS), home of the Germa…

Flying the Line (KSYR-KDCA) For February 4, 2023 Michael MacKuen Today we shall toast commercial aviation from late 1930s through the early 1950s, the days in which the US airline industry matured into an economically viable enterprise. A key technical invention here was the Douglas DC-3 whose size, speed, range, and all-weather capability made it possible for the first time that commercial carriers could make money on passengers alone. Prior to this time, the airlines depended on the US Government subsidies for Air Mail and flying was limited to the wealthy and brave. Afterwards, flying became part of everyday life. We salute this transformation with a DC-3 fl…

St. Lawrence River (Part Deux!) (And a small portion of the Rideau Canal) We continue our journey along the St. Lawrence River. Well almost. Last trip we took a diversionary turn up the northern passage and followed that Ottawa River to the City of Ottawa. We also traveled over some of the Rideau River in Ottawa before ending that journey at Ottawa International (CYOW). That is where we continue in this following excursion. I had a choice of either travelling along the Rideau Canal from Ottawa directly southward all the way down to the city of Kingston, Ontario which is located on Lake Ontario at the mouth of the St. Lawrence but that would cause u…

Three Countries, one river: Germany, France and Switzerland The flight follows the river Rhine from Mainz to Basel and extends into Switzerland up to Lausanne at the Lac Léman. We depart from Mainz-Finthen (EDFZ). Mainz is the Capital City of the German Bundesland Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate). The city lies directly opposite the city of Wiesbaden, the Capital City of the German Bundesland Hesse, at the confluence of the Main and the Rhine. After WWII, the borderline between Hessen and Rhineland-Palatinate was changed with the result, that the six parts of the city on the east side of the Rhine were given to Wiesbaden. But its inhabitants still con…

Maasai Mara (HKNW-HKLP) For January 7, 2023 Michael MacKuen We spend an afternoon flying over the Maasai Mara to conduct an aerial “safari”. First we fly from Nairobi to Keekorok near the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Then we reload a new flight to fly low-and-slow over the region’s herds of elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and hippos. We may get down to ground level to play with the animals. Our first stage involves flying from the national capital and its busy General Aviation airport Nairobi Wilson [HKNW]. Enroute, we fly over Karen Blixen’s old homestead [Blixen], now a museum, and then pass the Nagong Hills [Nagong Hills]. As late as the 1930s (as described in …

2022-12-31 US Airmail CAM 32 (Portland KPDX to Pasco KPSC) For December 31, 2022 Michael MacKuen Today we have a brief encounter with the early days of flying the US Mail. We “re-enact” part of Contract Air Mail 32 between Portland and Spokane. Here we limit our attention to the part along the Columbia River between Portland and Pasco. (Our time is limited and this portion of the routing will fit our constraints.) With any luck, this leg will provide a sense of flying open cockpit airmail planes though winter weather along the “prepared” routes. We shall use the newly updated “Arrows Across America” scenery and route maps developed by a group of enthusiast…

Bella Roma - or the Eternal City We meet for another scramble flight, this time around Italy’s capital city, Rome. When choosing the various destinations wisely, we will cross over the City of the Seven Hills more than once and get a good chance to see many of the well-made attractions this city has to offer. We start this flight at the Campo di Volo Sangermano (LIXU). Here as a reminder Mike’s explanation of the rules of a “scramble” flight: The Scramble Setup The “instigator” takes the lead by announcing the initial departure airport to set the stage before the event begins. On the day of the event, he will write down the names of the arriving par…

To the Gulf of Guinea and beyond We visit 5 West African states. Departure is from Lagos (DNMM), Nigeria. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the world's sixth-most populous country. The modern state originated with British colonialization in the 19th century, taking its present territorial shape with the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1914 by Lord Lugard. The British set up administrative and legal structures while practicing indirect rule through traditional chiefdoms in the Nigeria region. Nigeria became a formally independent federation on 1 October 1960. It experienced a civil war fro…

Anguilla to Guadeloupe: Time for some warm weather in December in the Eastern Caribbean! We start at Wallblake – TQPF and work our way south, via Saint Maarten, St. Kitts, and Guadeloupe, ending at Les Saintes – TFFC. Considering the short airstrip at Saba enroute, I will fly my RV14, but any aircraft cruising at 180 knots should be suitable. 2022-12-10 Flying the Hump (Chabua VG to Kunming RO) For December 10, 2022 Michael MacKuen This is the legendary Hump air route. During World War II the Allies had to supply China indirectly because the Japanese Empire had conquered much of China, including the entire coastline. While the Chinese government was able to relocate to Chongqing in the west, it needed to find a supply line for its military to prevent a complete Japanese victory. After the fall of Burma in mid-1942, the only option left was via air transport from eastern India to western China -- over the Himalayas. The idea of a massive airlift over high mountains was fanciful: the necessary aircraft, pil…

We explore Paris again and some of the Châteaux along the river Loire. The distance from Paris to the Loire is a bit long, so I divided this flight into two parts, Paris and Châteaux. Both flights can be flown either with “low and slow” airplanes like the Zenith, the Kitfox, or the Husky or a faster Helicopter like the H135 or H145. I will be in a HPG H145 in the Germany "Luft- und Raumfahrtzentrum" livery. The Paris flight departs from Le Bourget (LFPB) and we do our first landings at Le Pin (LFPH), just as a warm-up. We then visit most POI of Paris, from Disneyland Paris in the east to Versailles in the southwest. To relax a bit, we land at…

Chiapas & Oaxaca Starting in the southern most state of Chiapas in Mexico, the route zigs and zags over the mountains and back to the Pacific coast several times, heading northwest, and finishing in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Chiapas is home to the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilán, Bonampak, Chinkultic and Toniná. It is also home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the country, with ten federally recognized ethnicities. Oaxaca is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures. The most numerous and best known are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better tha…
