Yes, there a few of us now relaxing after the Christmas rush/family/food blowout! Almost installed XP12 a couple of days back, but holding off till the rough edges get sorted. Hard to get a true sense of performance this early on into the release. Anyways, is fps consistency a real issue? Some reports of serious fps fallout?

Way too many people are installing XP11 plugins and aircraft into XP12, expecting a seamless transition.  It just won't happen like that.  SASL, which is something many aircraft add ons use that are sold on x-plane.org, is not optimized for XP12.  Also, most plugins for XP11 are also not optimized for XP12.  To confirm all this yourself, install a clean (free) demo of X-Plane 12, and check it out.  You may get the odd hiccup in fps when loading new scenery or clouds/weather, but other than that, fps are very stable.  Like I said, it's when people start copying XP11 plugins over to XP12 that problems arise.

I still remember fondly from the early 2000s the year of the Linux desktop (I struggled on with my Gnome desktop)... still waiting

These days, there are Linux distros worthy to be installed on old hardware around the house. For example for file or print servers, home automation servers or for remote access. In fact, I do myself. But I would never consider running on it the the sim. Its purely for services and it does an okay job at that. Especially considering the price.

I actually run linux on some of my desktop machines. I would love to use x-plane on it (and I do sometimes), but the lack of support from 3rd party developers really spoils the experience. Navigraph simlink and BSS sound pack for Toliss planes are not available on linux.

I actually discovered that amd drivers are better on linux, and that I don't have the performance issues that I have on windows.

I checked again just now just for kicks and giggles. Mid-day of what is most likely the Christmas observed day off for many in Europe and right as steam usage curves ramp up (currently 8.7k online).

London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Berlin: zero green dots on the map. Let's see....that makes what % now?

Gimmick!

Friendly reminder: WHITELIST AVSIM IN YOUR AD-BLOCKER. Especially if you're on a modern CPU that can run a flight simulator well. These web servers aren't free...

@GoranM Okay thanks for that! Makes so much sense. Same as MSFS with people complaining about performance and they have addons loaded up to the “wazoo”. Will give the demo a try in the near future! Cheers!

I mean, if you can't find something to do with it, I just don't know what to say..

It isn't about capabilities or mmodeled features, it's about the utter lack of (2.8 compatible) missions or campaigns. Why are there no training missions to teach everything from basic handling to LABS? I'd be totally content with lobbing stuff on bullseyes, putting some holes in a canvas or air to air on drones or target banners.

Ah...well it can be challenging to find for the latest version of an unofficial module.

On the following, not sure which might be 2.8 compatible - many missions are backwards compatible, though.

SideKick / Iian Christie is a huge A-4 fan and hosts a number of missions & tutorials for that and other "iron bombers" on his discord channel, and some on his youtube:

There's a bunch of missions & campaigns on the DCS files downloads:

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/type-is-campaign/unit-is-other/apply/?PER_PAGE=100

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/filter/type-is-single/unit-is-other/apply/?PER_PAGE=100

And as always, probably the best place to find info is the officeial A-4E Discord:

Hope that helps a bit - would be sad to see you give up on either the aircraft or the game - both are very, very good!

eta: futher on tutorials, there are quite a few on youtube, as well. The quality is all over the place, but there are some genuinely good ones (including one on LABS in the first 4 hits): https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dcs+world+a-4+tutorial&sp=EgIIBQ%3D%3D

Thanks, I downloaded some missions from the Discord, including the one for the bombing range.

Dug through there and found others that may work.

Well, I've always been more partial to Falcon because of its dynamic campaign, but I also like trees and there won't be trees until BMS 4.38 which is still some ways off. So until then, I want to see what all the DCS fuss is about.

Those tutorials made me try the A-4 in the first place.

Anyway, let's better get back to topic.

I'm with you. MSFS will be basically dead in about 2 years. I'll enjoy it while I have it, but these numbers really don't lie about the dark future ahead for MS/Asobo.

Not even I expected that to be an optimistic projection 🤣

Xplane 12 and DCS basically being neck and neck is a huge surprise. Its looking increasingly to me like the fall of msfs as it becomes dated will be a lot quicker than it was for FSX and P3D, I'm not picking up anywhere near the commitment to the MS based sims that there was in the past.

Aged like fine wine.  Or something like that.  😉

FS2024 was just announced, so not sure about that whole "dated" thing.

To keep this on topic and relevant to XP, I'm still rooting for XP to stay alive and well, because competition is good.

And I still think it has a better lighting engine (most of the time, outside of a few issues).

But obviously, "the fall of msfs as it becomes dated" was and is absurd.

With their steam stats down to 5% of what they were at launch (100,000 per day in early august 2020 to 5000 per day now) how else do you describe the shock decision to try and relaunch it other than a blatant acknowledgement that it is dated and uncompetitive?

read the thread again, this is pretty much exactly what was shown was happening in these navigraph stats, but no one wanted to believe it.

FSX was the #1 sim for just shy of 15 years, msfs2021 barely survived 2.

All I see are the stats from 2022 at:

https://navigraph.com/blog/survey2022

With it at 75% market share.  I wouldn't call that "barely survived", I'd call it the dominant market leader.

I can't wade through 16 pages of this thread unfortunately.

Are there newer stats?   It doesn't matter about the Steam stats, of course there's a drop-off since launch.  All titles do this.  Amazon's New World went from 913,027 to 12,074 in 2 years.  Now that's quite the accomplishment!

I guess we'll wait for the 2023 survey and see.

I still check in with X-Plane to see the progress.  Curious what the latest beta brings to the table.

exactly what people were not looking past.

If that was the case there would be no need or desire to invest in relaunching it.

It wasnt true, the truth was they were burning away more users per day (originally acquired by marketing expenditure) than any of the other sims had users - into the other sims.

XP12 especially.

relaunch is a cynical attempt to get them back.

And given there is nothing in that relaunch trailer I haven't already seen XP12 do better (most if not all of which should release well before 2024)..... And that by 2024 I would expect most flight sim users will be like me and never be able go back to 2D....

lol, interesting times.

heck, even the 744 has firefighting kit for years already, just load up the global supertanker livery.

Lol. I had the same thoughts exactly. Lots of things didn't age well including the "No more budgets" comments.

X-Plane isn't going anywhere.  LR have quite an extensive roadmap for it, and the next few updates are bringing in some major improvements.
