Honeycomb Alpha or Thrustmaster TCA Yoke

Featured Replies

I have been using the Honeycomb Alpha yoke for a year and generally happy with it.  I have shifted to more airliner flying so I have been checking out the Thrustmaster TCA Boeing yoke.  Anybody switch from the Alpha to the TCA and would recommend it?

Thrustmaster definitely for airliner simulation. The only yoke that replicates a floor mounted control column. Complete with Hall Effect sensors. The other yokes on the market, while great quality, give the "GA" horizontal push/pull feel...so for airliners, Thrustmaster definitely. Regards.

I was literally just about to buy the honeycomb alpha. I saw you post and looked into the thrustmaster. I watched a few reviews and decided to get it instead. Went online to best buy and they had it on sale for 100 dollars off and free shipping sale ended today up here in Canada. I just got the yoke because I already have the bravo quadrant.

I own both.  I got the Honeycomb Alpha over 2 years ago when it first came out. Shortly thereafter I was having issues with the 'thumb' buttons on the yoke working intermittently and recently the buttons stopped working completely.  It turns out there is a major design flaw with the ports where there is an RJ45 cable (new cable did not solve, the ports were defective). The yoke is also way too stiff on the pitch axis (I have many hours flying IRL).  I don't think that was calibrated properly and not sure what the intent was there.  Also, the clamps were too small for my desk (2" thick..not out of the ordinary) so had to rig something for it to work. The sticky pad is ridiculous and will not hold for long.  Honeycomb then came out with the XL clamps and I ordered them.....they were too big!  The smallest setting on them was now too big for my desk!  Another design flaw and they were not returnable (if anyone needs a set..let me know).  I was just out of the 2-year warranty so nothing can be done on the yoke and it is not clear their new one coming out fixes this issue.  So I have a Honeycomb yoke destined for the garbage bin....

I decided to replace it with the Thrustmaster Boeing yoke and I am super happy with it!  I have had it for about a month and have used it mainly for the PMDG 737, WT CJ4 and Honda-Jet.  It also works great for GA so don't let the pendulum turn you away.  I really love the feel of it and you can adjust the pitch heaviness with the springs. Roll axis a little more stiff than Honeycomb.  It also fits my desk and is super easy to remove when not flying.  It really is a nice design although the only oddity with it is that the bottom part of it is pretty much in your crotch area so be careful or adjust your seat😄

Edit...I just realized you already own the Honeycomb...but I will leave my comments for others in case they are comparison shopping...

Note that the Fulcrum (slightly more expensive than the Honeycomb but substantially better) is eventually going to have a range of swappable yoke handles to suit different aircraft.   it is however a "push/pull" yoke, albeit one with 8" pitch throw.

Pay close attention to your desktop height. I tried the TCA as it seemed to be a close match for the Hjet (Hondajet). However I could just not get into a comfortable position with the TCA mounted on my desk.  If I lowered my seat adequately the yoke was then way too high ergonomically. Felt very strange. If I raised the seat up somewhat I had the base between my thighs and felt like I was riding a motorcycle. Hey, I had a 25 year career in motorcycling.  But the TCA for me was just not an aviation feeling. Just could not fly when positioned that way, especially for an average of two hour plus flights.  If you order one be certain you have return privileges in case your experience is similar.

My kids gave me a Honeycomb for my birthday. At first I was excited but soon the way too strong pitch movement turned me off. I took off the top screws and made a system so that it fit under my desk because it took so much room on my desktop. There was room. I also found the buttons and hat a little hard to press as compared to a Thrustmaster. I did like the ability of the yoke to make a full 90 degree turn each way. Much more realistic than a joystick and easier to control the amount of bank. I have limited time in a GA plane but the pitch movement was completely different. Also the trim on a real plane works differently also, but that's another discussion.

I'm not sounding too positive I guess, it's definitely a solid piece of equipment. I couldn't return it as it was a gift.

Yeah issue with mid price yokes is the 4" pitch movement.  Apparently getting more than that can get expensive as you need all sorts of support and bearings and so forth plus it makes the physical device much larger. probably part of the reason for the TCA design (more pitch movement on a smaller footprint base).

It is one of the reasons I went with Fulcrum - 90 degrees each way roll and 8" pitch axis.   The Virtual Fly Yoko has the good long pitch axis but only has 45 degrees each way on the roll axis.

Hi all

I am flying MSFS FlyByWire A320neo using the Thrustmaster Airbus TCA set with the Joystick and the extended throttle set (Thrustmaster TCA Captain Pack Airbus Edition).

I am very happy with this set.
I would like to add the apropriate pedals to increase the flying experience.

What is the best pedals set for the TCA Airbus edition?

Thanks

I picked these up a month ago. A bit pricey, but I believe it will be the last set of pedals I will ever need. They compliment my TCA Stick and Throttle quadrant nicely.

My Yoko+ is in the classifieds at a very attractive price.  It has a really good feel, my favorite non force loading yoke by far but after the Iris and had to go back to force and went with the Brunner.  The + has the Hall sensors, 12 bit resolution and the hat switch.

I never got to try the Fulcrum but it looks a great piece of kit!

Do you ever need to turn 90 degrees? I have never needed to turned my Yoko + in full 45 degrees as I can remember.
