That's not true at all, sorry 😛

Depends on what part of Italy, I guess!  We were told not to do it as older folks thought it was offensive.  I know the thumb is used when indicating "one" instead of the index finger, just not held in the up position.

Thumbs up. Offended countries: Afghanistan, Iran, and parts of Italy and Greece. What you think it means: “All good!” What it really means: Thumbs up is sign of approval in the US and even eventually to Zangief, but it actually translates to “up yours” in other places around the world.

Given that Roman emperors gave a thumbs up to gladiators that put up a good show, (So we are led to believe) I would have thought that in Italy a thumbs up would be a good thing. 👍

Where exactly?
Because none here uses it at all, and i would suspect i would know if things were different. Where did you take that information from? It simply isn't true and shoudn't be speading it around. It has no value.

Watching too many movies, eh!  Did they all look like Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix?

@Pastaiolo

By most Italian tour guides, mostly Southern Italy, Rome, Naples, Sorrento, and in some Northern Cities, Lucca, Venice, and Florence.  While trying to tell a shopkeeper that we wanted one item, and held up a thumb, he politely explained not to do it that way.  Also explained by Rick Steves on some of his travel shows here in the U.S.

Maybe it's not a bad thing any more.  It's been more than 25 years ago since traveling in Italy.

I honestly dont believe that, sorry. It sounds more of a thing coming out by someone who has no clue about Italy but have to defend a point based on something written on internet by someone who still wasn't italian. But okay, it doesn't really matter much at this point.

For everyone else, you are free to do the thumbs up. Now, the middle finger, that's another thing entirely different 😁

I wasn't saying that they can't do it!  After more thought it may have to do with how it was done.  Doing the thumbs up then raising the arm in an upward motion to chest high.

I'm done!

No fair! You just added a bit. You forgot 'Whilst shouting 'Yo mama' at the recipient.

Nah!  I was just sitting at a table in a French cafe with my hand in the air snapping my fingers and yelling "Garcon"! 🙄
