June 17, 20187 yr It is brilliant freeware - in my opinion it is up there with some of the best payware and significantly better than much of it! Manfred Jahn and company deserve our deepest gratitude for this gem. Bill Edited June 17, 20187 yr by scianoir
June 18, 20187 yr Amen Bill... It really is outstanding. And although it's been a zillion years since I flew the real thing, I do have a DC-3 rating and spent a year in the right seat early in my career and can vouch for the realism of this amazing bit of freeware. It has all of the feel and ambience that I remember from the real thing. BTW, before anyone says anything, I'm an old codger but not THAT old. LOL When I flew it, the airplane was older than I was. It was a start-up company that only lasted for a year. It then went to Cambodia in the late 60's and ended its days as part of a McDonald's Restaurant in Taupo. January 29, 20215 yr I know this is an old thread but it speaks of the two versions I am a little confused about. If I may ask a couple of questions 😀 I think I have the latest version of the c47. It surprised me because it has a modern looking autopilot , like those in Beechcraft etc. it has garmin GPs thingy ( unfamiliar, as you may have guessed!). my main problem is finding how to input a ils frequency in Nav radio. I cannot see where or how to do it. Can someone tell me please. also, I cannot find cowl flaps? it looks excellently done. also, am I right in thinking that I cannot have the c47R v3.12 version in my airplane folder as well as this latest version? TIA
January 29, 20215 yr Administrators Are you looking for the physical cowl flaps on the engine or the way to open and close them? Are you bringing up the control panel like I suggested at the "other site"? Under engines/4th thing on the list. The Vintage VC, as pictured above, is quite different and in fact does not have a working autopilot. You have to use the third box from the left, also in the above image. If it is the "modern" version, then the cowl flaps are highlighted in yellow in this image. Edited January 30, 20215 yr by Reader
July 16, 20214 yr I have the same somewhat more modern panel. It appears to me that Manfred started to build a version based on a turboprop conversion of the 3, which is being done in the real world quite a bit. In addition to the modern avionics, the primary instruments are a typical contemporary "six pack" and the overhead panel has a lot of non-functional switches etc (e.g. prop sync and various fuel-transfer switches) that would be related to running turboprop engines rather the radials. Also, the cowl flaps and fuel tank selectors are no longer in their traditional positions, but are unrealistic little knobs on a corner of the pedestal that look like they were last-minute thought when he decided to put out this "modernized" piston-powered version. Back when I first downloaded the 3, I was flying in FSX and I got the original version without the modern radios and without all the new stuff on the overhead. Somehow I was "upgraded" to this new version when I switched to flying in P3Dv4. I actually prefer this version in that a configuration with some modern avionics is what I'd be flying if I actually owned a 3 today. Plus, it makes it much easier to fly it comfortably in a realistic environment like Pilot Edge. The only thing I really miss from the original was the great cloud of blue smoke when you start an engine. The engines on this still have the realistic start-up sounds, but the exhaust is as clean as a turboprop. Also, the voice of the co-pilot seems to have gone missing, but it may just be that I haven't found how to turn it on in this version. My guess is that Manfred started building the turboprop version and then realized that - - while real-world operators love the idea - - very few simmers would be interested.
July 16, 20214 yr Administrators I would check the old download in the aircraft.cfg under [effects] and maybe copy over the older engine_startup effect. startup=fx_Cranky_DC3_TFF Charlie Aron AVSIM Board of Directors-ADMIN/Moderator-Registrar Awaiting the new Microsoft Flight Sim and the purchase of a new system. July 17, 20214 yr I did some more digging and have a clearer picture of the history on this. The "modern" version of this plane (the one with a modern, clean steam-guage panel) is a separate product that somebody (maybe Manfred himself ?) developed a few years ago. One way to quickly tell it from the classic is that it includes a very nice Piedmont Airlines livery which has never been part of the classic version. I originally started flying the classic shortly after I switched from FSX to P3Dv3. A a few years later, I upgraded to P3Dv4 and that plane stopped working. So I went looking for an updated version of the C47 and discovered the modern-panel version, which did work with v4. I think I assumed that this was a normal revised version, and the loss of all the lovely WWII stuff was just progress. After writing my post about the modern version yesterday, I went searching and discovered more of the story: When P3D upgraded from V3 to V4, the extant version of Manfred's DC3 was not compatible, and it didn't get upgraded for quite a while. My discovery of the modern-panel version was a lucky accident. The incompatible version of the original was v 3.12 Beta. The updated version of the original, which does run with v4 of P3D is v 3.14 Beta which didn't come out till sometime like late 2020. It includes all sorts of little improvements, both serious and fun (e.g the ability to put a picture of your own in the little pin-up spot on the panel) It's a little confusing to find this new version, only because there are a lot of sites still offering the old v12. The legitimate big download sites have it, though. You can tell if you have the right one, because it includes a long write-up by Manfred detailing the changes, along with a couple of little add-on files for options, like a more accurate rudder function for people who fly with rudder pedals.
