Ireland The Emerald Isle For Wednesday August 21, 2024 Michael MacKuen We fly to Cork and then up the historic center of Ireland to end our afternoon at Dublin. Between the two modern cities, we shall experience plenty of castles, ancient sites, and deep green fields. Compared to our last two Irish itineraries, this is the classic Emerald Isle. And, as our friend Ron Attwood would put it, this region is full of history: modern history, ancient history, and prehistoric history. J Blarney Castle and the Gift of Eloquence We depart from Kerry [EIKY] and fly over the long-established tourist city Killarney with its many pubs and hospitable people. We fl…

Ireland Atlantic Coast For Wednesday August 14, 2024 Michael MacKuen Today we fly down Ireland’s Atlantic coast – windswept, rugged and thinly populated. Beginning in the north’s Donegal, we pass steep cliffsides, mountainous valleys, salty islands, peat boglands, and the legendary Cliffs of Moher before going inland to Kerry. An organized tourist route along this breathtaking scenery is marketed as Ireland’s “Wild Atlantic Way.” The impressive Cliffs of Moher We depart from Donegal [EIDL], the northwest’s main commercial airport. Following the splendid seas-battered coastline around, we encounter the Cliffs of Slieve League. Though less famous than…

The Shining One and The Death Road Today s flight will take us on a adventure from Bolivia into Chile. This flight was originally going to be a High Altitude STOL flight but none of us have a aircraft capable of that adventure so I changed it to accommodate all of us. This was a flight inspired by itzNorcallyJ on the ToSite. We have 362 miles with 4 landings most at over 11,000 ft. You will need a plane that can fly high and fast about 220+ at 17,000 ft. P38s, King Airs should do the job or whatever you want to fly we don't need to push the throttle full forward on this one. No scenery needed as Asobo did a good job around here.. Flight Plan: http…

Ireland Ulster For Wednesday August 7, 2024 Michael MacKuen We explore the north of Ireland. First, we fly to some “light aviation” airfields in the Mountains of the Mourne and visit some castles and monuments on the way. Then a quick circle over Belfast before the Antrim Coast. Finally, we fly into the Republic of Ireland to Donegal. Dramatic Fair Head on the Antrim Coast We depart from Tandragee’s Kernan Airfield [EGVU], home to the Kernan flight school and the Kernan Valley flying club, both of which emphasize light aircraft. We fly into the…

Marquesas The Marquesas Islands group is one of the most remote in the world. It lies about 850 miles northeast of Tahiti and about 3,000 miles west of Mexico (the nearest continental land mass). It is thought to have been formed by a center of upwelling magma, called the Marquesas hotspot. Although Polynesia tends to be associated with images of lush tropical vegetation, and the Marquesas lie within the tropics, they are remarkably dry. That is because they constitute the first major break for the prevailing easterly winds that arise from the (atmospherically) dry Humboldt Current. This subjects the Marquesas to frequent drought conditions. My curiosity…

This a continuation flight in Mexico. We finished the previous flight at the Santa Lucia Air Force Station (MMSM) and we start from here today. We depart to the northwest and overfly some volcanoes before we land at Intercontinental De Queretaro (MMQT). The city is a strong business and economic center and a vigorous service center that is experiencing ongoing social and economic revitalization. All this has resulted in high levels of migration from other parts of Mexico. In 1867, Maximilian I of Mexico was defeated at the Siege of Querétaro, where the liberals took him prisoner along with Generals Miguel Miramón and Tomás Mejía. In May 1867, the emperor was sentenc…

This is part II of our tour around Queensland. We depart from Hope Vale (YHPV) and land again in Cooktown (YCKN), where we finished our first flight. Cooktown is at the mouth of the Endeavour River where James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770. Both the town and Mount Cook (431 meters or 1,415 feet) which rises up behind the town were named after James Cook. Cooktown is one of the few large towns in the Cape York Peninsula and was founded on 25 October 1873 as a supply port for the goldfields along the Palmer River. The next landing is at Daintree (YCBY) before we reach Cairns International Airport (YBCS). The city was founded in 1876 and …
