CJ4 Western Jet Tour We will fly several legs in the western US in the Cessna CJ4. This flight is to familiarize participants with the aircraft by performing the appropriate preflight preparation steps to make full use of the CJ4’s available automated flight capabilities. We start in Northern Ireland, the largely Protestant “loyalist” counties that have remained part of the United Kingdom. Marquesas The Marquesas Islands group is one of the most remote in the world. It lies about 850 miles northeast of Tahiti and about 3,000 miles west of Mexico (the nearest continental land mass). It is thought to have been formed by a center of upwelling magma, called the Marquesas hotspot. Although Polynesia tends to be associated with images of lush tropical vegetation, and the Marquesas lie within the tropics, they are remarkably dry. That is because they constitute the first major break for the prevailing easterly winds that arise from the (atmospherically) dry Humboldt Current. MD-VA-DC Photogrammetry Tour We begin the tour on the ramp in front of the AOPA headquarters building at Frederik Municipal Airport (KFDK). After takeoff we do a circuit around the city of Frederick taking in the photogrammetry details which include Ft Detrick and the old town center with its many churches. This is part II of our tour around Queensland. We depart from Hope Vale (YHPV) and land again in Cooktown (YCKN), where we finished our first flight. Cooktown is at the mouth of the Endeavour River where James Cook beached his ship, the Endeavour, for repairs in 1770. Both the town and Mount Cook (431 meters or 1,415 feet) which rises up behind the town were named after James Cook.
