What to back up when reinstalling MSFS2024?

Hope that works!  One thing I notice in the other thread, you mention running an XMP profile with your AMD motherboard.  You know AMD boards prefer EXPO memory profiles.  You want to make sure your RAM is fully compatible with your motherboard (ASUS publishes what they call a Qualified Vendor List (QVL) of tested sticks, other motherboard manufacturers do too).  XMP RAM on an AMD board can sometimes work well, but it might not, especially if the sticks aren't on the QVL.   I didn't see anyone mention that in your earlier thread so I thought I would mention it.

Thanks, The XMP would be a holdover from my previous Intel board, I’ll check when I get home but I think I subsequently switched to expo as part of this troubleshooting (which I think is part of the reason I’m seeing high 20’s instead of teens in the YYZ Max8 scenario).  I did check and buy off the QVL list for my mobo, so should be no issue there.  It is expo RAM.

I didn’t see any images of Watt usage under load (during flight and/or around your airport)?

I’ll grab that info later today.  I have a 1000 watt PSU.

CPU is a bit weak for that GPU, but I don’t think it would cause that low an FPS.

Is there a good upgrade path currently though?  From what I’ve read the 9800x3d gains would be minimal.

side note, great to see you here on Avsim Rob!

I’ve come to terms with the windows reinstall which I think I’ll attempt tonight.

  • But have you benchmarked your GPU? Cinebench only does the CPU.    try unigene superposition. It’s free.

  • I haven't backed up stuff and have reinstalled a few times in the last year. It has worked out well for me, the settings come back from the cloud. Yes, third party stuff may need to be installed, but

  • Some of the installers uninstall whatever is there first as part of the installation process. I usually just run the installer and let it do it's thing.

Yes, no need to upgrade. Your CPU is fine. The delta is pretty small

That would be great, just wanted to make sure it was working hard (should see 500-600 watts underload).

Forgot to mention that when I tested with the iFly 737Max, I was missing the exterior and only had the interior model.  Not sure what happened?  Some suggest a GSX conflict, but iFly 737 Max was working "fine" prior and GSX has not been updated since.  However, what was updated in MSFS 2024 came from the Market Place ... so perhaps some conflicts with models from the Market Place?

To resolve, I uninstalled the iFly 737 Max and installed it again (and updated it again) which seemed to clear up the issue.  Just a FYI side note.

On the ground at CYYZ, iFly 737, cloud, BATC traffic (roughly the same scenario I've been using), GPU power maxed out around 400w, general consumption was mid 300's.  When I panned around I had some stutters and the power consumption dropped drastically (around 200), then quickly went back up, I assume that's because the CPU couldn't send enough to the GPU.

Going to get started on the Windows reinstall, send best wishes (and beer)! 🙂

The bad news is, I forgot how annoying it is to get my computer configured to my liking after a Windows install.

The good news is I am seeing some pretty decent performance increases. In my YYZ / iFly max scenario, heavy cloud today, I’m getting 45-49 fps (without FG), and with a default aircraft in the middle of nowhere, I’m up around 80-90fps.  This is on ultra preset in 4K.

Now THAT is more like where it should be.  Isn't it great?

For my own knowledge...was your old Windows install the same install you ran with the Intel setup?   In other words when you went AMD did you hook your existing SSD or M.2 to the new AMD board?

It was…in retrospect (and seeing now how reinstalling windows is mildly annoying but not risky or the end of the world), I should have done it when I changed to AMD.  Lesson learned.

I tried to remove everything I could find related to intel, but clearly the windows reinstall is the only sure way.

Much appreciate everyone’s help here (and in my original thread).  Now to go fly 😀😎

Yes, now you are seeing the right numbers. Turn on FG at 2x and it will be super smooth. You can also cap your frames if you want your machine to run cool and quiet. I often cap at 30 (60 wth framegen, I only have a 60hz monitor), and the machine is silent and cool. Right now the limiter is a bit broken in SU4 beta, so maybe wait for that to be fixed.

Also make sure you install the AMD Chipset drivers if you haven't already.

Thanks, chipset was the second thing I installed after nvidia drivers 👍

Yeah that almost never works well (keeping the same OS install).

Yes I was lucky moving from my 5800x3d to the 9800x3d. Both AMD  of course.

but now I want to do a full reinstall just to be absolutely certain that I’m getting the full performance of my new CPU, board, and ram. Will do it over the weekend

That seems very low … but yeah, you should NOT leave OS “as is” when changing CPU brands (i.e. Intel vs. AMD).  You can get away with it for AMD to AMD or Intel to Intel upgrades, but not AMD to Intel or Intel to AMD.  OS clean install was the correct approach and glad you got is sorted.
