Universities in the USA, as well as many public schools, have been "dumbing down" their standards and curriculum for several decades.  They've made it easier to get into college and easier to graduate.

I won't elaborate on why they've done this, but many will know a big reason why.  More profit has also been a factor, IE make it easier equals more students equals more tuition money.

A 4-year degree doesn't mean much any more, that is, unless it's in a discipline like engineering or science which entail much more difficult coursework than your run-of-the-mill Business Administration degree, for example.

To some degree it's the dogma that universities insist on loading the curricula up with. Instead of learning how to become competent in the basics of the major.

Let's take an offbeat field were new graduates can succeed: anthropology of the Americas. The instruction plays down the obvious truth that these natives were constantly engaging in inter tribal warfare, they engaged in slavery, had male hierarchical systems, employed and enjoyed torture of prisoners, and were absolutely not environmentally consciences at all. Believing these fairy tales cannot hurt careers because they aren't doing anything with this knowledge in a practical sense.

In business and technical fields, you are supposed to use your skills in practical pursuits. And therefore your expertise has to be accurate and not dogmatic. You have to produce measurably real results in the real world and therefore your skill sets have to be based in hard realities, not "correct" pleasantries.

So....they were Europeans?

At this point, I would say Universities are good if you want to become a Doctor, Lawyer, Engineer or Accountant, beyond that your degree is just preparing you for your future as a barista 😁

Even when I was an electronics engineer 40 years ago the newgrad engineers we got were pretty good engineers but most of them couldn't write a coherent paragraph in their reports.

Do I detect a bit of sarcasm?

Yeah, Europeans treated the native Americans both in North and Central America very, very badly.

I have the greatest respect for native Americans, and have some Cherokee blood myself, but the point in the post you replied to was that the natives were no angels.  They treated each other just as badly before the Europeans ever got here.

No, no. Irony….I hope.

The attitude of SOME of the new FOs we’re seeing now is just shocking.

Ah the age old "Old generations complain about the next one", which I think this has been the case since at least Socrates (likely older).

I have below included a summary that was written in 1907 by Kenneth John Freeman (in his dissertion) regarding the general complaints about the youth by the ancient Greeks (sounds quite familiar does it not? 🤣😞

"The counts of the indictment are luxury, bad manners, contempt for authority, disrespect to elders, and a love for chatter in place of exercise... Children began to be the tyrants, not the slaves, of their households. They no longer rose from their seats when an elder entered the room; they contradicted their parents, chattered before company, gobbled up the dainties at table, and committed various offences against Hellenic tastes, such as crossing their legs. They tyrannised over the paidagogoi and schoolmasters
