January 24, 20233 yr Commercial Member I've seen a few posts around from people claiming they can't get good anti aliasing. I'm not doubting their word, but I thought I would post a series of screenshots with the corresponding settings, to be used as reference. It's obvious the AA and FSR needs a little work. Ben Supnik has acknowledged this and work has started in this area. But when I see images posted that show no Anti Aliasing, as in my very first link in this post, and someone else claims AA is set to full and they get the same look, I have many questions about the setup or the render settings. Equipment used is an M1 Max MacBook Pro, 64GB unified memory (for those who don't know how unified memory works, the 64GB of unified memory is used as RAM and VRAM. The computer decides how to allocate it depending on workload), 32 core GPU, 10 core CPU. Whether or not X-Plane 12 renders differently somehow on a Windows PC with AMD or Nvidia hardware, is up for discussion. Happy for any Nvidia and AMD owners to post comparisons between their X-Plane 12 install vs mine. January 24, 20233 yr just to reiterate from way back in october Ive said it before in every discussion on this so far. I haven't seen what I believe to be AA issues. I have seen multiple "jaggie" issues, but I am almost completely certain the cause is something else. think the last time we discussed this was AutoATC Developer
January 24, 20233 yr It is sometimes hard to show these on a static screenshot but shimmering is very evident when moving, see for example this video at 01:57 (must watch af full screen and highest resolution available)https://youtu.be/5uWxJuFMZcc?t=117 Those curved taxi lines are all jagged and behave like marching ants.

I'd have to see the settings before making any kind of opinion on it. I don't doubt they exist, (I consider marching ants a UV problem, but they're different to what is show in the video.) but they're only visible under certain conditions and settings.

A fairly significant change that I think slipped under the radar was the default FOV was changed from 60 to 80, I suspect that has the effect of increasing their likelihood. But this: is some kind of super funky rendering artefact imho, which has existed even back in XP11, its just seems much more common now for some reason. AutoATC Developer
January 24, 20233 yr On a screenshot AA is not really a problem, it is more apparent on a moving images where it create what people call marching ants or shimmering (screen resolution is also a factor). Now, put a VR headset on and you have a real problem, because of the lower resolution, and the fact that your head is always moving, even when you think it's not, adding to the already existing problem. I am a big fan of X-Plane, but I can't say AA is not a problem in its current form, even if it doesn't stop me from using VR, I sure wish AA improvement will eventually come.
January 24, 20233 yr Glad I found this thread. I have a Jetline Systems I9 10900K, with 64GB system ram and a GTX 3090 video card with 24GB video ram. It is an amazing computer but. I have been running XPlane 11 for several years and have zero problems with the graphics. No shimmering, stutters or any other video issues. I just loaded XPlane 12 a couple days ago and am actually disappointed in the graphics. I am the latest simmer who is now in the category of can't get good anti-aliasing. The trees shimmer, distant, straight line, roads shimmer and have a "marching ant" effect. When I compare the graphics using the same flight on Xplane 11, none of these issues are present. During a flight yesterday, I have tried tweaking the settings but that did nothing to eliminate the problem. I understand that Xplane 12 is a work in progress. I sure hope they or someone ese can find a solution. BTW I also use MSFS 2020 which has none of the graphics problems I mentioned. I will be following this thread for updates or possible solutions. Have a great day everyone!!!!
January 25, 20233 yr I am using a 4090 and have the 'marching ants', even if I force max AA (which hammers the FPS something else!)
January 25, 20233 yr You can actually see it very clearly in the last screenshot Setup: RX6800 | 5800X3D + B450 | 32GB 3200MHz | X-Plane 12
January 25, 20233 yr I think with the last 1 or two beta updates it has been slightly addressed.... it's not as bad as it was at RTM. I've not flown XP much but I updated today and was a least a little happier. Here's the difference though between XP11 at max settings which looks absolutely nice and no jaggies even while on the move.... vs XP12 with three settings I've tried - which when on the move still dance around like ants. As I said though, it is slightly improved imo. FSR off with 8xmsaa does look the best for airport surfaces, buildings but trees are still not great when moving. FSR Ultra with 8xmsaa seems to help with the trees (makes them a touch fuzzy but they don't shimmer as much when in motion). Again these are just screenshots when I was paused so it's a little harder to see the issues. Of course note the positive things like the much nicer lighting improvements over XP11!!! (Taken same time of day and I tried my best to replicate the angles etc) Oh - and these are 1:1 crops of 1440p screenshots....sometimes when you take a large screenshot and post it on a forum they look a lot nicer than in game. I noticed on Goran's comparison pics (I downloaded a few to view on my monitor) - the 4xmsaa and FSR Ultra (which I think would be the cleanest lines) still has a lot of jagged edges mostly on the top of the EFB tablet, on the horizon with the runway/taxiway or whatever that is and the trees. I wanted to add one more thing - XP12 (and apparently 11) have the same issue as MSFS - default airport hangars look like garages or warehouses! Some are hangars but all of these buildings in the real world look like hangars. (I know this because our plane is based here). xp11 by Ryan Butterworth, on Flickr Fairly expected but note the jaggies on taxiway here with FXAA only xp12_fxaa by Ryan Butterworth, on Flickr This clears up the taxiway but the trees shimmer real bad with this setting xp12_msaa by Ryan Butterworth, on Flickr This clears up the trees mostly...but introduces some jaggies on the buildings (most evident on roofs or areas of hard contrast between light and dark etc) xp12_fsrultra_msaa by Ryan Butterworth, on Flickr Edited January 25, 20233 yr by ryanbatc | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
