Purchasing a i9-9900K - Water Cooler or Air Cooler?

Featured Replies

My Corsair H115i Pro came with DVD for software installation.  From that I can change colors of LED's and also monitor the CPU cooler to see if it is working as most coolers are very silent.  I would have never gotten the Corsair CPU cooler if it didn't have LED light flashing and changing color while I'm running my computer (LOL! Just joking).  My ASUS 1080ti GPU has nice lighting effects too.  Makes me feel young again... For me, it was imperative that I NOT plug the cooler into the AIO Pump and in fact I did and immediately was told when I booted up I screwed up and to return the connection to one of the fan connections as they told me in the manual.  People like me make mistakes like this every day and, like the idiot lights that come up on the Corvette to tell me I need more gas, my Corsair install has the same thing.

The RAM is the G.Skill Trident Z Series

I have this RAM too and simply overclock with XMP Mode (which is the best mode for those who seek good performance with a nice overclock) and it automatically sets all of the timings, etc., in the BIOS.  This is very common especially on ASUS MB's.  There are some of us though that try to overclock the RAM even more and raise the voltages slightly higher or lower and it may work okay for some time but eventually you'll see a StackHash or NTDLL error and wonder what caused that.

Thanks for that post, Jim.

Glad to read an 'expert' like you, also did what I did, following the User Manual that clearly stated AIO_Pump, which I thought , logically, was the connection to make. Luckily for me, before I read Rob's very helpful post, that guy at NZXT was pretty helpful suggesting using the CPU_FAN header, what a relief it was to see him proved right when I booted into the Asus BIOS screen. He also said I could download the CAM software to do what your DVD did for your Corsair.

Very reassuring reading about the G.Skill. If truth be told, I have since 2018 been monitoring what kit different 'experts' here had,and compiled a list of gear to acquire slowly as funds flowed in.

Like I said in an earlier post, this has been a superb Thread, one of the best I have read for a long, long time. Gleaned all I needed from it.

Did you have to plug in a RGB header to the RGB port on MB?  If not, then nothing to worry about.

Cheers, Rob.

No, maybe that's what the thin cable I found in the box is for? Will try later today.

Just when I thought I'd reached Nirvana, despite an OS disk being in the DVD drive, despite the BIOS rightly detecting the DVD drive, the SATA SSD drive, and the M.2. NVme drive, the motherboard flashes up upon pressing F8 'this system cannot find any bootable devices', so cannot install the OS.

Any help/advice please?

Rick Almeida

not sure if this will help you or not.  But I would remove any SSD that you don't intend to use as the boot drive.  Then setup windows.  Only after that would i add any other drives.  I had to do that.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

Thanks, gents.

Figured it out eventually. Went through the CSM menu, enabled, and rest was voila!

Except for one small hiccup. As I did not have the conventional PS/2 keyboard/mouse , the USB versions were inevitably no-go until I had installed the drivers, etc, etc, so that will be rectified tomorrow., fingers crossed. Very pleased with the 23-24C idle.

Could somebody kindly advise how to get an Asus Z390 ROG Maximus XI Hero motherboard to recognise a USB mouse when surfing the BIOS Setup, yet cannot get it to recognise when the OS is loaded?

Cannot explore the motherboard CD to install anything. Even using a PS/2 keyboard, and navigating around, the ROG software on the disc seems to send a message 'we-want-to-flog-Google-Chrome-to-you', 😬and just gets stuck there, so I cannot install any drivers. How frustrating😬

Rick Almeida

The drivers for your MB are updated almost as fast as you install the MB.  Your BIOS just updated yesterday and that has a lot to do with how things operate within the BIOS - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/ROG-MAXIMUS-XI-HERO/HelpDesk_BIOS/

The DVD does not work as your DVD drive does not work.  If you have an M-2 device installed on your MB and you set it to Auto, SATA ports 5 and 6 will be disabled.  So, if you have your DVD drive in one of those ports, it will not work.  If you switch to SATA mode, port 1 will be disabled.  If you switch to PCIE mode, no ports will be turned off.  See BIOS setup 3.6.8 in your ASUS manual (this is the para for my ASUS X Hero).  The BIOS will tell you more when you get to that section on the MB.

I would recommend you go to the link I posted above and look for drivers for your MB.  These are the latest.

Great reply, Jim, but I cannot even install the driver for the USB network adapter, so surely would not be able to open that link.

Additionally, the M.2 NVMe is in the M2.2 socket that IIRC does not disable or may disable SATA ports 5 + 6. In any case, only SATA port connections I have are SATA_1 + SATA_2, where the SATA SSD and the SATA DVD drive is plugged into. If the DVD drive was not working I would not have been able to boot off it to install the OS, surely.

Will try your PCIE trick.

That's my aim, to get that network adapter working, thus I can get the NZXT software, etc, etc.

I've had no trouble using a USB mouse and keyboard plugged into USB2 ports 11/12 (back panel next to the PS/2 combo port).  I'm guessing that USB2 support is built directly into the BIOS.

By default, it is turned off and the DVD drive works.  So, when you first installed Windows, SATA controller ports 5/6 were working and they will continue to work in PCIE mode.  But, if you want performance, a faster M2, you will have to make a modification and then the DVD drive does not work.

Lucky, lucky you, Bob, because that was precisely where I plugged the Gaming USB Mouse. No dice.

Thanks for that input, Jim. I even tried Asus' own ROG Forum. What a total waste of time that proved to be🤐. 24-hour wait for account to be activated, and even past that deadline, still no access to the Forum. A sheer total waste of time.

As I wasted so much time, re-going through the BIOS Screen---where surprise, surprise, the mouse worked, yet did not in Windows 7 x64 Pro------, then tabbing the keyboard, but unable to install the drivers required because I could not tab down the the cascades, I got so 'word-not-allowed', gave up and headed to my local PC wholesaler to buy a PS/2 mouse.

At last, I feel I will be back in command tomorrow, fingers crossed. Otherwise, that Asus ROG was more a RAG than a motherboard🤐

My understanding is that Intel's Z390 chipset drivers do not support Win 7...I suspect that much of your issue lies right there.

Genius, Bob. Now all falls into place. Reason I went that route is because my existing Windows 10 was the universal MS free upgrade back in 2016. So, no set-up disc.

But my dilemma now, if I follow your sleuth work is, how can I test the whole new rig if I cannot install Windows 7 on it as I will have to uninstall the current machine I am typing this on, and then deactivate it, and only then be able to re-install Windows 10 on the new rig. Meanwhile, if I do go down that road, I am left stranded, no current rig, although 5-6 years old, but still giving me a good Flight Sim experience, even with a mere EVGA GTX970.

A real head-scratcher.

Rick Almeida

You can download a USB or .iso (for a DVD) Win 10 installation image from Microsoft and install it without a serial number, and it'll work for 30 days IIRC...certainly long enough for a test setup to ensure everything works.  I don't know if you'd be able to deactivate and then use your converted serial number on it or not.  I just sucked it up and bought a full retail copy of Win 10 Pro rather than trying to navigate that minefield.
