60 Minutes look at the F35
Nah, I just live under the R03 approach. Not to hijack the thread, but I've been lucky enough to have flown as baggage with a PPL friend in a Warrior, with a video camera, and as a result I've produced my own scenery, with ai etc. (Look for it in the library) A frustrating task though - I included some 800 trees, and 12,000 houses....it wasn't until P3d arrived that I had decent frame rates. Regards Bill

60 Minutes look at the F35
Good one, Dave. Now you've got me worrying when my 'Call-up' papers are going to drop thrugh the letterbox...I've been simming since '86. Do you think that they've forgotten my details ? :Nail Biting: Regards Bill

60 Minutes look at the F35
Wow ! Thanks for posting. I envy those two. I bet it's hard work, though. Flight 250 in 25 seconds ? Knowing how 'they' hide the full specs, I bet it can do better.... I like that part - where the 'other' aircraft doesn't know that you are there, before 'bang', it's gone. Scary. I love the way the media go on, and on, re costs/overruns. I like to think of it this way. If you don't spend it - you're gone. Sigh. Back to P3d and my JF Hawk T1. Where's my afterburner ? Bill

Add-on Developers, Why the Secrecy?
Todd.. Well said. I spent years 'playing' with Assembler - programming procedures, getting my library of routines, and after a while it becomes so tedious - when a 'mental block' occurs. You come across a point where whatever you try, that hiccup in the code will not right itself. So you lose interest - for a while. Can you imagine someone like Lefteris at FSL trying to 'bring together' a group of like individuals on such an intensive program ? or PMDG for that matter ? I'm really not surprised at the time it takes to consider release. I'll bet if those staff were working in the same building, and not in the 'global' village, they may have come to blows at times.... I found that family life was a great release. I could return to my programming after a few months and the fault was eventually found, and removed. I have only admiration for some of these teams, who eventually release their work. It is so easy to criticise a product, especially in this hobby, which, when you sit back and realise the complexity of something like a 'bus or some commercial scenery. I found that the frustration on many occasions nearly caused me to quit - I could afford to - I wasn't committed in order to earn my bread and butter - but many are in this game. Simulation is, IMO, much more difficult. It has to mimic reality - exactly - if our current membership of this hobby are anything to go by.... Regards Bill

That is absolutely brilliant. I couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes - couldn't see the screen. Priceless. Thanks for posting. I haven't seen that before. Bill

When 'push, comes to 'shove'...
I agree, it is the user's decision. I suspect, however, that most of us here will continue with future P3d versions - there is no equivalent alternative. I'm hoping that LM will consider allowing us to keep two copies (or two versions) on the same machine - this 'patched' hotfix v3.3 and a future version - both accessing the same scenery. I don't think a different config will do the job ? I'm going to fly locally until the situation is sorted. I'm an optimist. I don't think many developers will let us down. Let's face it - many of them are enthusiasts too. I think we must support them - if the hobby is to survive. Regards Bill

My New Old Add On!
Well done, Sam. That's how I feel when I take my A2A Cherokee up over my own EGOW Woodvale scenery (compiled with the P3D SDK, BTW). I am also in FS Heaven - I have actually flown from/around EGOW in a Warrior II, also filmed my RW flights (as baggage) from the front passenger seat, and I'm flying the same R27 approach over the dual carrageway in P3D 3.3. It can't get any better than this. Ok, I'm having the same problems as other UK2000 users of EGGP & EGCC, but what the heck, I know that Gary won't let us down. So meanwhile I'm practicing my 'local' approaches... I take my hat off to LM. May this progress continue. As an 'old' ASM programmer of sorts (I even had my own 3d clouds in FS 5 using SCASM) I realise the problems which Gary & others are facing. I only hope that it doesn't cost me too much.... A visit to the Nvidia failure lab.
Absolutely brilliant. An eye opener. I think that says a lot about Nvidia - allowing the cameras in. Nice one, Nvidia. Puts a different perspective on my mobo.... Our host also did a nice job of filming under those conditions. Well done. Thanks for posting. Regards Bill

I am totally amazed.
Vic.. Nice one, Vic. Farming background, I wonder ? Bob... Well done, Bob. Your post is a bit of fresh air. I wish for a few more posts like yours. I'm also having a ball. I started with FS1 back in '86. That's 30 years ago ! (..and some £20k over those years) I'm lucky enough to be able to create my local area to fly over, with my own ai and road traffic. It is sheer heaven to fly this sim when it all comes together. My favourite aircraft is the A2A Cherokee 180. I also fly around G. Summons' UK2000's EGCC and EGGP. Fantastic. I often use three monitors, with the left, right & centre views. Talk about 'Being there'. I think LM has excelled, and it can only get better. Glad it also works for you. Although I have had control of a Warrior on occasions, I'm not a pilot. I have great sympathy for those pilots like yourself who are now grounded through no fault of their own. Sims like P3d must be a lifeline. I'd like to see more really positive posts like yours for P3d. The sim deserves it. How lucky we are
What a great thread, Rich. I love these 'positive' threads. I agree with all these comments. I also think of Tom every time I visit here - daily. I sincerely hope that his pic will be a permanent feature on the front page. He left a fantastic legacy for us all. The majority of members also help to make Avsim great. I often wonder how you all find the time to fly, moderate, and help. My copilot tells me that I spend far too much time in my 'cockpit'. I disagree. (..but I've gotta remember FCM is essential.... ) Regards Bill 0.9nm SW R03 EGOW i7 3770K 4.3GHz, 16GB RAM, Asus GTX970 4GB, Dell U3011, CH Yoke & Pedals Thrustmaster T16000M, NGX, A2A Cherokee, A320/A319, QW BAe146 Horizon GenX 2.0 UK Scenery Vols 1,2 & 3, UK2000 EGGP & EGCC Scenery Extreme Whenever I fly in the real world, after takeoff I put my hands together and say quietly to myself 'Please, I hope that both flight crew have the fish' ('Flight Into Danger', Arthur Hailey, (1956)

Wow ! v3.1 is great !
I thought I'd start another thread - I found the earlier one a little difficult to follow (23+ pages ?). This is for the 3.1 doubters. When I thought that Flight Simulation couldn't get any better, here comes v3.1. I've just been flying the A2A Cherokee 180 around Merseyside, and what a delight. I elected to do a full install, expecting to spend hours re-installing my NGX/A319/320 and my local scenery. ..and I didn't have to do anything. Nada. P3D did it all for me. The sim came up with my default flight all ready to fly. The visual effects are really stunning - and water effects haven't really concerned me. but this is REAL ! :Applause: Go for it, guys. I did a backup beforehand, of all my DLL/Scenery.cfg/flights/effects - I didn't need them. The Cherokee took a few seconds to display the cockpit, then off I went. All my settings were as I left them. I have a backup of all my installations, zips etc and installation folders - each on its own BD-R 25GB - just in case. They were not required. ...and it does appear to be a lot smoother, and the visuals to be much sharper. A slight snag - when uninstalling v3.0 I had five components to uninstall - and three of them were named 'Prepar3d v3 professional'. Wasn't sure which - I intended to just try the client, and if any problems occurred I was prepared to do a full Setup. Turns out that they were 'scenery' for some reason, so I removed the lot. Rebooted. Hit 'Setup'. Took just under 15 mins. A second problem - activation. Got an error: 'Web service call failed. Please check internet connectivity' (9101)' This IS very frustrating when you're firing it up - I'm impatient, had to use my laptop (copying the activation html with a USB stick/saving the response...but it worked ok. Had to do that with v3.0. (and yet I was online with no problems before and after the successful activation). Weather menu seems a little more responsive. (Setting cloud base has been a little fiddly - had to repeat it a few times in v3.0). No more. The change in base alt now takes seconds. That annoying 'Exit Error' has gone. Didn't have to calibrate my CH Yoke or pedals. Both work flawlessly. (I use a USB 3.0 7- position switch - with indicators - so that I can switch over to my T16000 for the Airbus). I forgot to switch them on at first, but the aircraft responded immediately to both whilst in the air. All in all, this is just about perfect for me. I'm running a 3770K/16Gb/970 4GB on Win 7 with a Dell 3011. I occasionally use three monitors with the Cherokee for the front & side views - all on the 970. Couldn't do that with FSX. Talk about smooth...I always use 20fps fixed. I'm a happy camper. To those v3.1 doubters, go for it. Regards Bill

Do you know whats really annonying!
I still howl at this one.... Found an interesting news item the other day regarding electronic communications... After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago. Not to be outdone by the Brit's, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 100 years earlier than the British". One week later, the Department of Agriculture in Ireland reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet near Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, Mick O’Connor, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely 'nothing at all'. (Sorry - I cannot repeat the actual phrase he used) Mick has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Ireland had already gone wireless". Regards, and Christmas greetings to all Bill

Badass Pilot Buys Own Fighter Jet
What a great video. Since we over here are going to have two carriers - and no aircraft to fly from them for the next few years, can he please come over and protect us here in the UK for a while ? I can use my credit card to buy his first tankful.. Sigh... what a fantastic aircraft. I always thought that after a few accidents involving loss of thrust in the hover, someone would come up with a twin engined Harrier. Probably too heavy then for a VTO ? Best of luck to him & the team. Regards Bill

Bravo!
I have frequently given up night flying, simply because my FR has been, shall we say, labouring with all the scenery lighting. I flew a few 'Night' circuits last night in the A2A Cherokee 180 around G. Summons' UK2000's EGCC and EGGP. Probably caused havoc and gave the towers a few headaches. There were heavies all over the place. I apologise to those Purists out there. :Big Grin: Fantastic. Couldn't see the trees waving, though. Too dark.... I used three monitors, with the Left, Centre & Right views. Talk about 'Being there'. Couldn't do that before v3. Too slow. I remember when FS3 came out, moving up to EGA. That was a turning point for me. (I started with FS1 in '86). This is one of those moments, IMO. I reckon P3D v3 has 'made it' for me. Talk about smooth. Well done LM. :Applause: To those doubters re 'Is it worth it ?'. YES ! Regards Bill 0.9nm SW R03 EGOW i7 3770K 16GB Horizon GenX 2.0 UK Scenery Vols 1,2 & 3 UK2000 EGGP & EGCC Scenery Extreme

P3D 3.0 Speculation & General Nonsense
