Is Pimax Crystal Light a good idea to get for me ?

Yes this kind of thing - there are a few suppliers around but this is the basic design I am using.  It adds back weight that helps balance and around an extra 2 hours of battery power.

The Pimax Top Strap - yes, I use that also - more to accurately set the height than for the comfort.

The face pads I use for both are from Studio Form.  They are softer than the supplied ones (the Quest out of the box face pad is dreadful!)

And the weights at the back of the PCL are cloth pouches filled with lead shot - again from Studio Form

The total weight of the PCL with all this stuff on is 1.4kg.  Total weight of the Quest 3 with the extra battery pack is 0.8kg.  I can't get the sim to post my photos, but in terms of the size difference between the two headsets with the above fitted, think of those slimming advertisements with the 'before and after' photos.  The PCL would definitely be the 'before' shot...

  • There are some OASIS driver coming that should work as replacement for WMR. Still a question. Is the last word said ?

  • Hi @jfri I have both the Pimax Crystal Light and also the Quest 3.  Although I have recently upgraded my CPU to an x3D, I was previously running a 7700x and a 4080.  User Benchmark has this as ar

  • This is sound advice... too many variables in too many places inevitably leads to performance issues...

If I can reword that, I consider both headsets to be very useable for MSFS2020 and MSFS2024 on my system. But they are very different to each other and they both have plus points and minus points.

If you want the best visual quality of the two - and are prepared to consider hardware upgrades and ‘tweaking’ that might be required - then the PCL, hands down.

If you want a great all rounder that is decent for the flight sims, is easier to use for non-sim stuff and is ‘easier on the eyes’, is more mobile and is lighter weight, then the Quest3 is a strong contender.

BUT…they both need tweaks to work well, they both need third party addons to be able to comfortably wear.

I’ll list my 3rd party addons when I’m back on the desktop 🙂

Do you also run DCS ? For me that sim gives me hardest hit on performance.

An expensive PCL + hardware upgrade (GPU) which would cost as much as an PCL is out of question

I found the Studio Form website. Which face pad are you using ? In what way is default Quest one dreadful.

It annoys me that these extras are for all practical purposes neccesary. Considering the high prices for the VR sets I think they should have sufficient components as default. Of course the prices here must be taken into account

I have run DCS on it, although only briefly.  It ran OK.

I wouldn't have thought that you would need an upgraded GPU, my 4080 copes fine and the 4070Ti isn't that much different.  Maybe CPU, but even that is probably worth a try with the spec you have...

I would wait if possible for the Pimax Dream Air SE, and its MSFS users reviews.

But I see it will be significantly more expensive with controllers. And I find the price increase for controller edition strangely high

If they have a USB-C DP version and its "low" price, would be a possible winner for me, together a better sound speakers. Then after the case of the hype and after the bluf of the Megane X, it could arrive in some months also the new Valve HMD regarding rumours. I am happy with the HP G2, but I am feeding my piggy bank for just in case. And waiting for Bigscreen2 reviews from MSFS users, and they use the same Oled Sony panels like the Dream Air SE, if I remember well.

@jfri I would be cautious with the Pimax "light" version, some people says that it is like wear a heavy microwave in the face or two monitor of 42" in the forehead haha, and I think nowadays an eye tracking is a must, and Light don´t have it.

Even with the OASIS software I would consider to buy a 2nd hand WMR HMD.

What is this eyeracking ? And if it excludes PCL what alternatives are there ? Does Quest 3 have eyetracking ?

"Foveated Rendering:

Eye tracking allows for foveated rendering, a technique where the area of highest detail is rendered at the highest resolution, while the periphery is rendered at lower resolutions. This saves processing power, allowing for smoother framerates or higher graphical fidelity in supported titles. "

An with good price... ...maybe I will only recommend the HP Reverb G2 Pro Edition of second hand, and maybe the PlayStation VR2, but I don´t know if it has eyetracking already working in PC, in the launch not, and maybe now with mods. Both less resolution than the Pimax Light, though more VR PC friendly in performance surely.

Are the same plus foveated rendering and without velcro to tight the head straps, maybe in your world zone there weren´t released, and/or they are really rare to find, so maybe wait also for the Oasis and reviews, and because if you have W11 24H2 they don´t work now, and buy for low money an HP G2 Reverb normal, or the light, or what you consider better.

I already have a HP Reverb G2

I forgot it from the first post, then for me all solved, stay with it, invest that money in better hardware if you want spend that money, would be my advice nowadays.

Stay with your G2. I really like my G2 but I have increased the resolution in openxr to 266% and set the resolution to 50% in the sim. The image is much clearer without to much performance loss.
