Pleasant Surprise with Helicopter and Medium Settings

Featured Replies

After my refund request went unanswered by Steam, I decided to cancel it and give the sim another shot. Honestly, it’s a lot better now. Even though I experienced a CTD during final approach, I still managed to get a solid 30-minute flight in with the 172.

What really caught me off guard was the helicopter—it’s so much fun to fly! Surprisingly, it feels a bit easier compared to MSFS 2020 and XP11, but still enjoyable. I also turned off all the assistance settings, and even then, it still feels quite manageable. Not sure if it's realistic though...

I’m also impressed with how good the sim looks, even on medium settings (with Buildings and Clouds bumped up to High). If my refund had gone through, I was planning to switch to X-Plane 12 for its well-known helicopter physics, but for now, I’m pretty happy sticking with this one.

Which helo?  I use the H225 and it's a great product!  Hype is also going to improve on it with a custom autopilot similar to their H160.

After some nighttime offshore ops I was able to load a simple flight plan in the FMS and shoot an RNAV approach with LPV mins, and the Navigraph charts beta works on the EFB!  Decent flight model too!

(Default oil rig helipad here and it's phenomenal!!)

Bummer I don't have that one in the Standard version 🥴

Regarding realism of the scenery, it's indeed simply amazing, and so smooth / stutter free!

As for the flight dynamics, it's a compromise - incomparably superior scenery with a still WIP flight dynamics engine...

Look at those night lights... not far from XP12 standard.

Btw, I took the Guibra a hovering exercise. Unlike MSFS 2020 or even FSX helos, it is quite manageable since I dont have rudder pedals.

Sorry for the dumb question, but how to turn on the cabin lights in The Gimbal and H125?

General Cabin lighting is above and behind pilots (centre of cabin) for the H125.

System 1: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X @ 4.2GHz, 2x16GB DDR4 2600MHz CL18 RAM, EVGA RTX 3090 FTW, Samsung 840 Pro SSD 1TB, Samsung 840 Pro SSD 512GB, Seagate 2TB HDD, Windows 11 Pro 64bit, Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog.

System 2: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D @ 5.7GHz, 2 x 32GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30 RAM, ASUS ROG ASTRAL RTX5090 OC, 2 x 4TB Lexar NM790 M.2 PCIe 4.0, Crucial T705 2TB Gen5 M.2, Samsung 840 Pro SSD 1TB, Moza AB9 with Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog Flight Stick, Winwing Orion Rudder Pedals, Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog Throttle Quadrant.

Never really flown a Helicopter so maybe its soon about time to learn this.

I have a HOTAS Stick but otherwise i am seriously amateur.

is there a good place to start a learning curve ?

When I started my journey into Helicopters it was with these YouTube videos.

MSFS Helicopter Flight Tutorial for Beginners & How To Fly Helicopters In MSFS2020 - Basic Skills

And finally this series from a real world Helicopter pilot. He does not go through control settings in MSFS.

Also came across this recent video for MSFS 2024 control settings which is useful.

The BEST Way to Master Helicopter Controls in Flight Simulator 2024! For NOW

Man what a fun and sometimes frustrating journey it has been, but well worth it.

Hope you find them useful in your journey and don't give up!

It is not impossible to fly helicopters using joystick twist axis to control the torque, although not the most ideal. I think the Cabri should be a good start. For the payware, Taog Hangar's Alouette is also forgiving in terms of torque. Surprisingly, the default Airbus 125 is poles apart from the free HPG's 125. It should be more stable right since it is more "automated"?
