Seeing as PMDG have experience with automated flight engineers on their DC6 I would not be the least surprised to find one on their 742.

Personally, I do think there's a market for it. How many A320s and 737s do we need? Time to get into them classic liners and dig deeper into the learning curve. For me, the RFP 747 was a great experie

FSS have also demonstrated quite a capable automated FE on the 727, and they're a much less resourced dev than PMDG. It has very few issues but lacks an automatic mode, would be my only feedback. What I'd be looking for from PMDG would be a similarly friendly UI experience. Even PMDG's newest attempt, the UFT, still feels like legacy tech and a clickfest if it's all going to be implemented there - FSS killed it with a separate display in the form of the iPhone.

On the other end, FSL Concord's VFE is so automated that completely kills the fun....

IMO 747-100/200 doesn't eve need a VFE except switch few fuel pumps in long cruise...
