Took The Plunge. Bought XP11 on Steam Sale

So far, I am impressed by the accuracy of the default airports I have visited. The live weather is acceptable as well and the terrain texturing in my own area, Central PA is good enough to navigate VFR. The only plane I flew so far was the Cessna 172. I know from experience it Flys as it should. Control setup is in depth with more assignment options than FSX/P3D. I really WANT to fly in this sim. It doesn't feel like a game.

However. It also seems empty. Very little in the way of air traffic. And the ATC emulation is a step above useless. I mess flight following and contact warnings and proper UNICOM. Very quiet. If Austin would have just done a thorough ATC overhaul it would have thrilled many people. Overhaul with an assortment of human voice samplings. If he had included native voice to test response even better. Communication is so much a part of flying, I would rate priority above photo real scenery even.

I can hope XP 12 fixes both ATC and Traffic.

The Flight modelling of the default C172 is actually rather poorly implemented. Go for simcoders REP or Airfoillabs C172 "NG" if you want to truly enjoy Xp11 and a Cessna 172S. Makes a ton of difference and if you are familiar with the real C172S you will appreciate XP11's strenghts  even more.

So... After all maybe there will be room for A2A in xp12 😁

There's a $20 plugin called RC4toXplane that enables use of Radar Contact v4 in X-Plane.  RC4 is a former payware ATC add-on for the ESP sims, now free in the AVSIM library.  Despite its age, it's still really quite good for IFR flying.

Honestly, X-Plane would probably have remained a passing curiosity for me had I not gotten RC4 working.  With that and ActiveSky XP for wx, XP11 has proven quite enjoyable, and it has gotten me back into a number of planes that never made it into P3D, like the B747-200, B767, B727, A300, A340, etc.

I am familiar with the Cessna 182 Skylane. The A2A version is a ringer for the one I train in. Even the avionics are the same. 530/430 stack and I use RXP in the A2A. Never been left seat in a 172. I know there is less power. So, maybe A2A can tweak it a bit in upcoming 12.

I just wish somebody had proper VFR UNICOM COMMS emulated. I always do my simming parallel to my actual flying and at nearly 59 I probably will never see complex, IFR certification, or multi. I don't sim IFR very much. Sometimes, default P3D style but I don't do it often.

You probably don't want to spend money on X-plane (at first), so as Msparks said, the only  way to get better ATC and AI is AutoATC, especially if you want to keep it IFR.

An x-plane.org account may be a commitment, but there won't be any way around it if you're curious about some freeware offerings made by the community (or a flight dynamics upgrade to the C172).

Experiencing XP from a FSX background was a night and day thing for me three years ago. Especially the little things like the lightyears better camera controls and more dynamic flight models.

For ATC only, you can try the beta releases of X-ATC-Chatter and its SimpleATC feature, which provides a fully working plugin, but without the ATC chatter voice clips (access to which costs $15).

Thanks for the info guys. I think I have X-plane.org registration. I already have 124th ATC. Better but still the same robot voices. Yes, I'm really interested in UNICOM VFR Comms but in winter (live in PA and only use live weather) IFR is desirable some days. I need to fly when I get time and those times are not always CAVU days.

Well. As I said I haven't flown an actual 172. I'm learning in a Skylane with a little more horsepower than the 172 but the feel is relatively close between the actual Skylane I train in, the A2A Skylane I simulate at home, and the 172 in X-plane 11. Obviously the 172 in X-plane doesn't climb as well or cruise as fast but it is day and night from the default FSX and earlier 172. It is nice to tool around my region (Susquehanna Valley, PA) from one small field to the next. Just wish ATC was better implemented for VFR flying into controlled space. I would love to see how KCXY was done, if the big Texaco sign is on the main hanger. Or KRDG if the MAAM ramp and hanger are there.

So, autoATC  looks interesting but question. Am I to understand that the cellphone app must be used concurrently with the sim? It doesn't work on sim with headset alone?

Also. Callsigns are unique to a plane, typically GA aircraft. What if I register N172SP initially and after decide I want to fly the Baron or the Beech 90?

Thanks

it uses google voice recognition for talking to atc - dont have a different usable option for that.

Also when using the app it uses google text to speech for the voices - this is by far the best sounding option, there are a lot of them, with many different accents.

The plugin has its own text to speech which is "ok", 5 or 6 voices with a "radio" filter applied, so can otherwise function on its own (minus the speech recognition), for xp12 the aircraft animations and environmental sounds are getting an overhaul, so actual pushbacks in the airport rather than spinning on the spot, better looking follow me car, less robotic heli taxis etc, there are a few other more "fun" things planned to, but not clear when they will come out or if they will go into a different plugin.

it "registers" your callsign based on your first "good day/radio check" you can change it with "correction my call sign is xxx" at any time,  ir it will forget you if the app isnt connected for more than a few minutes.

So, basically even the full version must have the app running on cell phone concurrently with the sim? It is the cell phone that hears me and not the plug in through my headset mic?

I couldn't open the Manuel but I did read your post on my phone. I will try to open it from my PC later today.
