August 16, 20205 yr DirectX 12 places a lot more responsibility on the developers in order to get optimisation right. This is why most implementations nowadays cause microstuttering and other errors (the VRAM issue with Prepar3D 5.0 was completely unheard of, and is probably an error on their end). I trust that Asobo will get theirs right though, and considering they stated that the engine will specifically be upgraded to DirectX 12 Ultimate, we can expect a lot more enhancements than just lower overhead on the main thread.
August 16, 20205 yr I’m not real privy to game development. Can MSFS be made to take advantage of DirectX 12 later if it wasn’t developed with it in mind from the beginning? What kinds of performance improvements can we expect from it?
August 16, 20205 yr How does the GTX 1080 compare to the RTX 2070 in terms of performance, are they about equal or is the 2070 faster? What's the name of the tool he's using to monitor all the stats? He says that he's running at MAX settings at 4K, so I'm assuming every slider to the right and everything set to ULTRA quality with maximum AA, etc? Wish he would show his settings so we can confirm. Yes - that how it worked for Prepar3D V5, I doubt V4 and before had any notion of DX12 requirements. I won't speculate on performance because it will be just that. but DX12 seemed to significantly benefit Prepar3D V5 over V4. Edited August 16, 20205 yr by flying_w www.supertrafficboard.com
August 16, 20205 yr not only that DX12 Ultimate would bring potentially DLSS, Ray Tracing, Variable Rate Shading and Variable Mesh Shading. https://fsprocedures.com Your home for all flight simulator related checklist.
August 16, 20205 yr Does this mean once DX12 is finally supported high core CPU's such as the 3950X (and it's upcoming replacement) will yield much better performance than other options that are currently considered to offer the highest gaming performance?

That's what DX12 does if done right but IPC and GHZ is still a factor. https://fsprocedures.com Your home for all flight simulator related checklist.

Without diverting into an entirely hardware based discussion I am hopeful that the potential engineering samples of the 3950x replacement supposedly hitting very nearly 5 ghz will offer the best of both worlds and prevent bottle-necking the new flagship graphics cards.

I'm using a 2K monitor(less than half the number of pixels to render) with a 9700K cpu and GTX2070 so should be good to go. There is a pretty big difference in airliners. Less so in GA aircraft but still some differences. https://fsprocedures.com Your home for all flight simulator related checklist.
August 16, 20205 yr Then he is right since he was flying a light plane with about 20% CPU usage compared to FSX which would be at 99% ALL of the time.
