How many of you are going to ditch P3D/X-Plane for MSFS2020?

Featured Replies

Very frustrated with the Extremely Slow Pace of XP / Vulkan. This has been going on for years and years, they can't get the code right. Still has a Long way to go at this rate. Also takes a lot of effort to maintain scenery, plugins, addons etc.  Other than that it is at it's core a great sim, and the developer support is Amazing. Really like the new freeware First Officer plugin with Zibo Mod.

But if MSFS can be less maintenance and have great visuals and performance I can easily see it and the Pmdg being the main go to sim. I am tired of problems and tweaking etc. I just want to plan and flight and go.

I fear that the part about great performance will not end up true. I have no doubt that the real system requirments will be close to the stated ideal one.

Basically I agree with most you said, but on that one I share different experience. Maybe you meant it semantically different tho. This is not about Laminar Research, but sometimes the community shoots over the limit in defending their lovechild.

When you critizise something (and I am not talking about tree size or undulations), they tend to attack. I saw that happening when someone asked why a 50+$ addon that gets tagged study level is only offering a default LR FMC - that guy got smashed for mentioning this (how dare you, it's a great plane!). I experienced it myself, when I stated that modeling aerodynamics with pseudo-wings inside the fuselage is a workaround for something flawed / imperfect and therefore got a 7 day ban for trolling on a big XP portal. 😄

I'd hope addon devs and community leaders would react more professional in that regard.

Happy with MSFS 🙂

Actually that's not true. When doing preliminary CFD calculations, e.g. using VLM, wing is often considered one-piece, as if it would continue inside the fuselage, exactly like it's usually done in XP. This accounts for the carry-over lift over fuselage which would be difficult to calculate in a simplified CFD method like VLM or XP's real-time BET.

OK I'm gona rant a bit but I'm with you on that, I've been reading the P3D forums from several sources and it's a mess from tricking installers, moving folders, hot fixes and modifying the registry ect.. I just don't have the energy to deal with that right now and then flying on white knuckle eggshells hoping you don't get a CTD, on top of that for the P3DPro+NGXu I'd have to dish out about $400Cdn. Then you have the die hards who say that everything is fine when clearly it isn't, you have 3HF's for 4.5 and already one for v5 and clearly needs another. To me it just seems unfinished and rushed out before FS20 comes out to rake in as much as you can.

The question was would I ditch P3D for FS20, that's like asking would you ditch your Logitech G for the Honeycomb.

I think your rant is a bit off base actually.  (Maybe that makes me a die hard..)

Don't know what you are flying currently, but if you like it, stay there!

P3D is an evolving platform and it is getting better with each iteration.

If I were to predict the future, I would expect MS FS2020 to likewise become an evolving platform, and as for stability... it is currently in alpha testing.. that should tell you something.. 😉

I ditched FSX in favour of X-Plane about 4 years ago. Previously I was running both FSX and XP on the same machine for about 2-3 years but it's just too much effort to keep two sims up to date, best to focus on just one.

However, I don't believe I will ditch X-Plane for MFS2020 any time soon. I will probably purchase FS2020 on release but I will wait for it to be tested thoroughly and "sink in" the community before abandoning my current sim.

I totally agree, and if you were coming from fsx and do a clean install and just have v5 with everything default it would probably be fine and then just buy add-ons that are v5 certified. But as platforms evolve some beloved add-ons have to be left behind and because of the complexity of everything, trying to merge all those add-ons from v3 to v4 to v5 and beyond is always a mess no matter how you look at it, I mean half the battle with P3D was/is tweaking and fixing, and for a time I really didn't mind that, trying to use the NGX in v5 is an example of that.

The question for us "veterans" will be that, will FS20 have enough built-in add-ons to load and go.

Dreams are what progress is made of.

Having to turn down sliders to not get a CTD after the last 'update' isn't evolving nor getting better.

But like you said, its nice to dream. 😉

I keep dreaming that one day a simulator will have built in AIRAC updates for every cycle with an ATC that follows SIDS and STARS.

No body has even seen what LR will do with xplane 12 yet? One thing xplane has going for it, is zero stuttering, fluid flight. No other sim released at present can offer that .

Ive seen some alpha videos of the new sim MSFS and it still has popping autogen. Xplane does not suffer from this immersion killing problem. Ever.

MSFS does look amazing. Let’s see what it’s like when the dust settles. And let’s see what LR bring to the table. Because, everyone needs a little competition 🙂
