Anybody seeing "Green" in FSX now that you have FTXG?

Featured Replies

While I am really enjoying FTX-Global and am a many time happy ORBX customer, the representation of the American West/Southwest including many parts of my area (Colorado) are far too green and lush, and the hues are much too "purple" - and a flight over the Grand Canyon area in particular was a bit of a surprise, as it almost  looked like the Canyon was buried in a sort of greenish snow (which I think was meant to be a "sage brush" type of texture - screen-cap a post down now), and the reddish/brown coloring of the desert was really no where to be seen.

It seems overall that the hue palate for FTXG is really biased towards deep greens and purples, and this really makes the Great American desert Southwest and the semi-arid Rocky Mountains look way too "well watered" :Big Grin:  - Its my understanding that OpenLC will provide corrections for this sort of thing, plus making the mountains look more like the gray granite peaks I see from house and not the green covered mountains with trees that run well up beyond the tree-line, so I am looking forward to this product as well.

Overall FTXG is a very, very nice improvement from the default FSX presentations, but tweaks are going to be needed from OpenLC...

Regards,

I do not have the product and am waiting until I see what the greater audience users thing overall. I would like to see the screenshots of those issue you mention....most certainly if you look at the Orbx website screenshots you are absolutely correct, everything is very very green.

And from personal experience the areas you mention are hardly green in summer, try dried up dead and brown, golden colours.

Yeah that's the unfortunate problem with all texture addons.

For some reason MS decided to use same textures in areas that in real life have very different looking terrain, basically they used same textures in some areas that have relatively dry terrain (like Grand Canyon, a lot of Central Asia like Afghanistan) and with areas that actually are quite green in real life, this is the reason why you encounter so dry looking textures in unrealistic places I believe.

So now as ORBX wanted to make things look properly green in areas that truly are green they had to make those previously dry looking textures green too... And then this is what happens.

I think the solution for this are the future OpenLC packs which add different regions their own individual textures so that dry regions won't share these same textures with greener areas anymore.

I will definitely stay flying mainly around Europe, Southeast Asia, Caribbean etc for now, away from regions that share these textures.

Ah, I just "ping-ponged" back over here from my thread about this in the ORBX forums (and your response there), and I guess I may have to follow your lead and pick regions with more "naturally" occurring green as well...

Are you using a 3rd party Land class like FSG or Cloud9? If not that may be the reason, and like was said the OpenLC should address the issue. To verify, you should inquire over in the FTX forum.

Thanks

Yup that's too green for sure...I actually have some good photoscenery that covers the canyon that could be used instead of the FTXG textures.

This is what some of the canyon looks like on my install, which is using SceneryTech landclass... does this look any better to you?  There's definitely still some green though.

I am not using any payware LC product currently, and will wait to see how OpenLC addresses the issue - I have indeed inquired on the official ORBX forum just to make sure my understanding of what they will be offering with OpenLC matches what I was thinking...

The reduction in green vegetation is certainly an improvement, but to my eye (YMMV), the rock textures don't look a thing like the horizontally layered sandstone and limestone strata that should be there - this appears much more like igneous and metamorphic rock with lots of purple looking hues (could be the light) - for this particular area anyway, default FSX is closer I think...

You should probably look into some of the photoscenery options for this area then.  That's the only way you'll see the kind of detailed rock formations etc you want to see. :)

Ha! Maybe so - it could very well be that FSX's fairly decent color palate, but lack of much detail allowed my brain to more readily accept what I was seeing :Tounge:

It's hard to believe those two lower pictures are of the same scenery as the OP.  It looks like you're running Shade in that second set of shots as well (and those shots look very good to me...I see the green pasture textures, but overall, quite realistic looking for generic textures).

Have you got Holger's mesh for the Grand Canyon installed?  It might help.

Also, I like the screenies from Molleh, they look better then what yours is showing.

They are indeed really nice looking shots - and very realistic looking for somewhere, but not much of a match at all for the real area. I purposely took my original Grand Canyon shot at midday, with no weather so I would get as little REX lighting and sky effects as possible, just so I could concentrate on the FTX-G textures with the stock FSX  land classes - its not what I was hoping for...

I don't - and am not familiar with Holger's effort for the Grand Canyon - if its just "mesh" the land morphology would better of course, but unless he included other texture or landclass upgrades with it, I don't think it would look any different with FTX-G (provided I understand the tech for this as I think I do :smile2: )
