Latest consensus on necessity of Terrain Radar plugin

Featured Replies

Hey all,

From my understanding, 12.3 includes Terrain Radar natively along with weather radar. Do I still need the old plugin? I believe the new one was incorporated for some airliners? I believe Zibo, Toliss, FlightFactor? I think those are main ones. Not sure about the Rotate jets. Any info? I can't seem to find anything on the web about this. Any help would be appreciated. Apologies if the question has already been answered elsewhere.

Removed it ages ago, and I doubt it works correctly anyway since xplane changed the weather radar works

So... removed the Terrain Radar plugin. Doing a Zibo flight (latest version 21), and there is no terrain radar. Pressing TERR on FO's side does not even give the blue indication of TERR on the screen. I don't think they implemented it if the terrain radar was part of XP 12.3. Am I even wrong about it? I thought I read that in the changelog that it was also implemented natively along with the weather radar.

There are many videos on youtube showing showing the zibo radar implementation, every update is tested live. Make sure you have latest zibomod.

Have not run Zibo's 737 with the terrain radar plugin for years now and do not miss it at all. The default WXR's "Map" mode does the trick just fine for me, if necessary.

It's not "terrain radar".  It's an approximation of an enhanced ground proximity warning system (EGPWS).  An actual terrain radar, mostly used on military aircraft, paints the ground with a focused radar beam and displays the return, and the display you get is MUCH different than the color terrain displays depicted in the sim. For example actual terrain radar masks out/blanks distant terrain features located behind terrain in the foreground, the display is affected by altitude, beam power/angle/width, etc.

EGPWS uses the aircraft's GPS-derived 3D position and movement vector along with a digital terrain map stored in the avionics to synthesize a terrain display relative to the acft position and movement.

The terminology, like the actual devices, is not interchangeable.

The "Terrain Radar" plugin mentioned above is in fact an add-on for EGPWS, AFAIK it's still needed for EGPWS TERR display and VSD in Zibo.

The Weather radar in zibo 4.04+ is using new XP12.3 radar and hence with MAP return function, but as Bob said, it's not same as "Terrain Radar" plugin's EGPWS function.

IIRC same on Toliss Airbuses.

Default A330 and 738 uses new default EGPWS.

Rotate MD11 also uses default EGPWS, but if you switch it's WXR to MAP mode it also uses that EGPWS, not actual radar return even if you mod the new 12.3 radar in.
