If MSFS 2024 won't load, try this..

If you are not in the Beta, then join the beta. If you are in the beta, revert back out of the beta. This has an excellent chance of overcoming the problem where 2024 will get stuck while loading the sim.

And then when it is loading OK, you can quit msfs and do the opposite (e.g. rejoin the beta).

Another tip: 2020 can handle overly long file names. But apparently 2024 cannot.

So, if you have lots of content (planes, scenery, etc.) in 2020 community, and you want to transfer all of that to 2024, then run a file length checker on the whole 2020 community folder. If some are too long, then that content is not compatible with 2024. 2024 will never load until you find and get rid of the content in community with too long of file names.

example: the Bigalou Cessna 172 mods have really long file names. Don't try to put them into 2024 community if you are using the Store edition. Because the path names are so long in the store edition. Unless you go to My Library in 2024 and change the location ( the smaller ships wheel icon) to a new path that is shorter in character length.

Last time I joined a beta, MS decided to wipe my entire installation including my addons, so once bitten, twice shy in my case.  I will wait for the official release.

Better graphics, poorer fps: the beta

Better graphics, about the same fps: DLSS 4

Better fps: Nvidia display driver 571.96

I am doing all 3. The first two for better graphics. The last one to restore the fps.

Learn and use Addons LInker. Then the Community folder can literally be one level off of the drive's root directory. pathname/filename length should not then be an issue unless an addons creator gets incredibly sloppy with extremely long subfolder names and incredibly long filenames.

I read reports of 2024 changing custom community folders back to the default location that starts with a long key string... 8wekyxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It may not for several bootups, but then all of a sudden it does rewrite the path back to the default.

I don't remember reports of 2020 doing that.

Have not had that happen. Should point out that my MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 are also installed off the root directory of my D drive.  MS Store versions.  Both sim installations do have some folders and files in the typical deep locations.  But at no times did my Community or Official folders get reverted to those locations.

This all cries out loud for more installations options or user defined installation locations from Asobo.  It has to be user friendly, and intuitive not just for those of us with decades of PC experience.  And it should not also do some of it's own thing at the same time.
