is my system getting weak now?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Hope you're all doing well and enjoying the weekend!.

I'm just wondering if my system specs are getting on now a little, i cant seem to get more then 45fps in the pmdg 737 in general. (if anyone could direct me to gain more fps if i could squeeze it out)

Specs i7 10700k @ 4.8ghz

RTX 3080FE

16gb ddr4 3200mhz

1440P monitor.

what would you guys say the most beneficial upgrade path would be if needed.

Thanks 🥰

More than "FPS" beyond a reasonable minimum (45 easily hits that and then some) what matters far more (to me) is ultra smooth animation w/o stuttering.  Have you reached the latter?  You should absolutely be able to but if not speak up and that is the pathway I would recommend to you--full optimization to lose stuttering and to garner ultra smooth animation.  It's very possible and happens every day to some to have high frame rate and poor freedom stuttering, microstuttering and other disruptions to ultra smooth animation.   I could easily afford to upgrade to the best possible hardware at this moment in time, but I can't argue for it because what I already have is more than amply satisfying.

Install the lovely freeware app called CapFrameX:   next time up after you've loaded CFX hit the F11 key to start a capture of Frame Time Variance (ultra low variance equates to ultra smooth animation) and see what you have--this is an objective way to measure smoothness.  Here's what I see w/ my method of optimization--note the frame rate is lower but the FTV is ultra low:

Once you have reached this level of ultra low FTV and freedom from stuttering, very high frame rates only affect one very small part of this:  rapid panning at close range to object is the only place you will see the difference between a frame rate of 35, and one of 60.  Might seem hard to believe but that is because many equate high frame rates from freedom from microstuttering, which unfortunately it isn't always the case.

Why on earth would you need more than 45 FPS??

You shure right but it is not only the FPS, i think more older PC´s like mine aswell have more problems with stuttering, zooming around stopps and stutters short before landing at airports.

I think this affects more older Rigs because of the Bottleneck characteristics ( mine is my Intel I7-7820X ) should be much better with a Intel 13900KF i assume.

Shure not everything would be gone but a lot better i would think..

I dont want to crash the party.... but it is indeed possible to get 60FPS (and even more maybe) with the same FTV shown above with some "state of the art" hardware. Those who are already experiencing it will never go back to 30Hz. I invested in a new system som time ago and i can't imagine switching back to 30 FPS.

Those who ask "why would you want more than 30 FPS?" have clearly never experienced the so called ultra smooth animation with 60 FPS.

So to answer the OP:

I guess yes, your system is getting to its limits with MSFS and i think there will be not much gain in FPS or smoothness with any of those snakeoil twaeks.

You should also ask yourself if it's just the fps number that's concerning you.  Can you still enjoy flying with 45?  Try flying without checking the fps counter.  I reckon you're just fine with what you've got.

Your system is fine. Don't waste your money on overpriced hardware.

The best thing a simmer can do to lower stress and blood pressure, is to turn off the FPS counter.

It may be overpriced. But one can not deny the leap in performance it brings. For some of us it is worth the money.

Go ahead, post the graphic from CFX.  Yes of course state of the art hardware will improve the frame rate but the reality is frame rates higher then even 35 are largely identical to a frame rates of 60 or above except for rapid panning events pretty much is about it, period.  You WILL NOT be able to discern the difference except when rapidly panning, and when I'm busy making sure I'm executing the duties of captain rapid panning isn't a frequent occurance. Ask me how I know:  I've done it many times at 60+ frame rate.  What matters far more is ultra low FTV and absence of stuttering--these are the issues affecting all aspects of the gate to gate flight behavior.  And from testing by someone w/ an RTX4090 using FG, he was unable to get near the ultra low FTV displayed in the graphic.

Well if you dont see a difference its up to you i guess. I can clearly see it and i am happy with what i got. Smooth from gate to gate as you say. Not here to brag about it or to convince anybody. Just sharing my experience.

If it doesn't matter to Noel, it doesn't matter. Haven't you learned that yet? 😝

Yep, throw it in the bin already. An iPhone 4 will wipe the floor with it. 😆

Seriously, if you want more FPS then an RTX 4000 series GPU to have frame generation is the way to go. You'll need a CPU upgrade so that there's no bottleneck, which requires a new Mobo, and you'll need new RAM.

Does the extra FPS matter enough to you to justify a brand new PC? Can you wait until the next line of CPUs are released? You'll get a little more bang for your buck if you can wait.

And add the question "Do i play any other game that will benefit from a new System?".
