Needing help please to get VR working.

Hopefully, someone can point me in the right direction or provide some things to try?

Specs first:

  • MSFS MS Store version.
  • Steam and Steam VR installed.
  • Pico 4 headset
  • AMD 5800X3D
  • RTX 3090
  • 32GB Ram

Pico is set up and working on it's own fine. Set up wireless link to pc using the Pico Streaming Assistant. That also appears to be working fine as I can start Steam VR on the PC and view in the Pico. Gone through the set up and all appears fine. If I launch MSFS2020 - hangs near end of loading if Steam VR is running but start MSFS first then connect Pico and Steam VR then I can see MSFS 2D in the headset. I can start a flight and sitting on the runway ready to take off. As soon as I hit CTRL+Tab or use the Switch to VR option in the menu, MSFS just hangs. Audio from MSFS continues to play but MSFS is otherwise unresponsive. I can switch to other apps just fine and view them in the Pico.

So far I have tried reinstalling Steam VR, changing between DX11 and DX12, MSFS in safe mode and installing latest Nvidia drivers. Still the exact same behaviour.

Tried firing up XP11 and VR worked at the first attempt so headset and streaming app are not the point of failure as best I can tell.

Does anyone have any idea how to resolve or better troubleshoot? I'm keen to try MSFS out in VR before making a decision on a potential new GPU.

I don't know if any of these will help, but I've been collecting info. on Pico 4 and MSFS while waiting for my headset.

Thank for these.I'll give them a deeper watch later today to see if there is anything that may be impacting my issue.

Finally resolved my issue! 😀
SteamVR was the issue. I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling it previously but it made no difference.
I finally narrowed it down by running nothing other than SteamVR then starting MSFS. MSFS would get to around 95% loaded then hang. As soon as I quit SteamVR, MSFS would resume and finish loading.
This time to try the SteamVR reinstall, I followed the instructions at the following which seems to have done the trick. Now after reinstalling SteamVR, MSFS loaded up fine and I could get into VR within MSFS without issue. BTW, I was blown away by the impression of VR after only a minute in the Caribou cockpit. Will need to start working through various settings to clean up the image over the weekend but already feel I’m going to be hooked.

The following guide to do the reinstall of SteamVR for anyone else that hits a similar issue:

Glad to see you could solve your issue.

It seems SteamVR is every time the culprit, each time somebody has an issue in getting a VR (non-WMR) working in MSFS... I had read that a few times in other conversations, but I could never understand the actual cause, or the actual "correct" technique to get SteamVR fully functionnal, so I didn't dare to reply here 😕

I have been more lucky in getting my Pico4 working, since it worked right from the start. But that was maybe because I had another VR headset before that one, so VR was already functionnal on my PC in the past...

Now, when it comes to getting a nice picture quality with the Pico4, be very careful with the various settings here and there, because there are several places that impact the final resolution of your picture, and on top of that you have the Wifi connection which also my add some differences in quality. I would advise you at least to set the video resolution in SteamVR to a fixed value, not "automatic". Start with 100% then see if you can raise it or decrease it, based on what performance you get.

Thanks Daube.

I've seen a few guides and only running a 3090 at the moment so expecting some compromises but will start experimenting in earnest this weekend. I was planning on waiting on a RTX 4090 second hand but the VR experience may change that and have me buying earlier. Will see how I get on.

Compromises, with a 3090 ? We might not have the same definition for that word 😉

I only have a 1070ti. Can't even run the Pico at 100% of the resolution, I have to decrease to somewhere around 2000x2000 or something like that, 90% or such. That's compromise 😄

Are you running wireless and if so Using Streaming Assistant or Virtual Desktop?

I'm using both, trying to compare them. Depending how lazy I am.

Streaming assistant has the advantage that it supports the connection by USB cable natively (my Wifi is not very good, it seems to limit me to 430 mbps or so...).

Virtual Desktop is a bit more complex to use with cable connection, you need to install some apk on your headset to activate the USB tethering, but once you learn the technique it's easy enough. Virtual desktop is supposed to provide better image quality and performance too, but on my limited hardware I don't really see the difference that much. However, with virtual desktop it seems I have a greater control of the sound output (to choose if the sound should go to the headset speakers or the computer).

Thanks. I'll play around with Streaming Assistant first over the weekend and get things as good as I can then consider VD.
