Is it a good idea to get RTX3090 for MSFS now?

Hello folks,

As you can see from my signature, I own RTX2080 with 8gb which is alright at the moment. Now some local dealer has an offer for RTX3090 around 1000€ and I am considering to get it, especially after SU10 and DX12, I assume the larger the VRAM, the better MSFS gets? What do you guys think, shall I get RTX3090 or wait for RTX4080 ?

thanks

a thousand euros is 967 dollars (US). The list price on one of the new 4000 series is under 900 dollars. That's the one I would buy instead of a RTX3090. You get DLSS 3.0, the whole shebang. Better performance.  Cheaper price.

RTX 4080 12GB – $899

RTX 4080 16GB – $1199

Definitely time to wait. You want all that DLSS 3.0 goodness in your sim. Next generation FPS ultra perf.

You mean "next generation FPS cheat"? I would not rely to much on this "get 2x more FPS" marketing blabla until it is actually there and DLSS 3.0 is actually implemented into MSFS (might take some time...). It could easily be that due to the fact that many things depend on CPU calls, this interpolated additional frame due to DLSS 3.0 results in some unwanted side effects. Those you would of course not see in the short demo shown with flying a default airplane in the 3rd person view...

Add a novel PSU you most probably need and it is not so cheap anymore...

OP didn't post what psu he has. PSU's are cheap compared to gpus.

The 4xxx has same or lower PSU requirements, because they finally sorted out the massive spikes.

The op is considering going to a 3090 which he sees in the store for 1000 Euros.. An RTX 4080 card will be cheaper than the one he sees in the store and almost sure to give much better performance. The watts required are not much different. Even if he buys and new psu not a big deal.

His question was should he proceed to buy that card.

I would say no.

I would also suggest to wait at least for the 4080 (16GB). I had a 3090 and 3090ti and these cards are not powerful enough to enjoy MSFS.

And again 30fps it not „smooth as silk“ or whatsoever.

My own personal thinking is to buy AMD or a second hand Nvidia. There is a lot of people pointing out what Nvidia seem to be doing with pricing and marketing. Without getting political on this discussion, this could potentially lead to Nvidia pricing and the lineup changing depending on how the market and AMD reacts.

Ryzen 9800X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB, Win 11. MSFS2020. Moza, MFG, Fulcrum & Virpil controllers. Quest 3 for VR.

I was tempted a while back by a 3090 setup, but at this stage, I'll wait for the 4000 series, and reluctantly aim for a 4090.

I would advice the OP to wait and see what the 4080s are like. What will also be super interesting is what the availability will be like at these inflated prices.

You could not be more wrong: the 4xxx series will require the novel 12pin connector and basically an ATX 3.0 certified PSU. Yes, you can use adapters, but I dont think it is really recommended to do so:

I was tossing up between getting a 3090 or 3080ti. And I’m glad I waited and stumbled across a 3080ti suprim x for 800$ used what a beast of card !!!!

🤣 his wife was mad and told him to get rid of it asap.

i got lucky

That has literally nothing to do with the power requirement, what are you on about, that's just the connection type and no, it doesn't REQUIRE it when you can use adapters. Nvidia and the AIBs wouldn't bundle adapters with it if it wasn't "recommended", they aren't sending out fire hazards.

The 3000-series also has a massive problems with transient spikes, that meant even the recommended wattage was exceeded, sometimes had DOUBLE THE LOAD during transient spikes

They made big improvements with the 4000-series to avoid these massive spikes from happening, so the 4000 series are actually less likely to need an overkill PSU as well, which was recommended in some cases with the 3000-series.

Did you watch the video? Of course it has no direct connection with the power requirement and a 850W PSU is basically sufficient. BUT, the ATX 3.0 standard allows for peaks that no current 850W PSU could cope with.

And, as the cards are not yet released, I would definitively not put to much confidence on "they would not bundle adapters if it would be an issue". You do not need a fire hazard for annoying consequences like "unexplained" CTDs, freezes and driver resets. We will see if those cards will finally hit the market, but I am prepared to buy a novel PSU if I really aim for a 4xxx card and I would strongly suggest anyone else to do the same...

No, I don't watch JayzTwoCents trash videos and his clickbait titles. I tend to stick to people with knowledge. And feel free to see my edit, the 3000-series are more likely to cause problems than the 4000-series with adapters, they are more than capable, else it wouldn't be included or be able to be used. What you are doing is just buying into the notion of companies trying to upsell the latest technology.
