Will FSX Steam run on an i3?

Featured Replies

I am a new member here and I am also broke, so I have to shop frugal, but I am using tax returns and stim checks to get flying with you guys.

I presume the answer is "yes" as i3 is outdated by today's standards and FSX SE still seems to be flying, so .....

But I want to do my best to make sure.

Let me be more specific about the cheap system I am considering:

  • Intel® Core™ i3-9100F 3.60GHz
  • ASRock H310CM-HDV
  • Total 16GB - (2 x 8GB DDR4-2666 Patriot Premium)
  • AMD Radeon® RX 550 2GB
  • Patriot Burst 240GB 2.5in SATA3 SSD
  • No Secondary Storage
  • Standard Cooling Fan
  • No GPU Overclocking - Stock Speed
  • Set Talos E1 Micro ATX Tower
  • 500W ATX12V POWER SUPPLY
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home

More info on the motherboard:

Although AMD video cards have never been known for being the best for FSX, I think the budget system you are considering will run FSX:Steam Edition.  You might not be able to push the scenery sliders to maximum, but it should run ok.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Yup, that'll run FSX no bother. Go for it. 🙂 🚀

Hi

Your PC can run FSX SE.

FSX SE is a simulator that relies heavily on CPU power and very little on GPU.

Your CPU, an i3-9100F, has a power equivalent to an i5-7600K, its single-core performance is very similar.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i3-9100F-vs-Intel-i5-7600K/3461vs2919

Regarding the gpu, FSX works best with nvidia gpus, but you won't have any problems as long as you use discrete graphics settings and use full HD resolution, but I recommend you look for information about AMD GPUs in FSX.

I just recommend you to get a SSD disk of at least 240Gb for FSX SE exclusive use and a CPU cooler such as the cooler master 212, as long as your cpu exceeds a temperature of 70ºC.

I advise you to read the following to configure FSX:

Thank you very much, everyone. Looks like, though, I may have more funds on the way so I may hold off for a bit. I did order my control yoke/foot pedals the other day so it looks like I'm well on the road to flying the friendly digital skies.

Absoulutley it will run on it, my first FSX system was an ol Dual Core processor running at 3.2Ghz with an ATI 4750 and i got pretty much locked 30fps with careful use of sliders using ORBX Global and Active Sky

Just make sure your fans are able to cool the CPU running constantly at Turbo Boost. If possible, try improving the GPU a bit (a 1050 may do fine) and definitely get some additional storage. That 256 GB SSD is great for the OS and other programs, but I fear it won't be enough for FSX.

Which monitor do you intend to use? Maybe this can define what GPU you'll need.
