September 14, 20205 yr Author Currently planning the actual upgrade, and it seems that I don't even need to reinstall windows10. I have a digital lisence, and as far as I understand it, if I just leave the SSD alone and reinstall it on the new MB, win10 should spring to life and will be activated through the win10 troubleshooter. September 14, 20205 yr Author By the way, what is the latest advice on having MSF and the OS on the same drive? I have several samsong evo 1tb drives, and my current setup is having my os on a samsung 500gb ssd. Now I wonder if I would see any benefits of having both on the same NVME? The danger with this approach is that if the upgrade does not work (I was unsuccessful getting the upgrade method to work coming from an 8086K on a Z390 mobo), then you end up with an unbootable system, and you won't be able to release the licenses on any software that requires uninstallation or deregistration--that includes PMDG, FSL, FSPS, PTA and other addons, and in fact P3D itself. That would mean sending a lot of e-mails and waiting at least several days for your software to be ready to install again. I uninstalled all the software I knew to require deregistration first, and saved myself a lot of pain when I discovered I was going to have to start with a fresh OS install. Personally, I would just take the high road from the start and build up the system anew, which gives you a nice clean registry devoid of all the lingering remnants from years of use. 28 minutes ago, Andreas Stangenes said: By the way, what is the latest advice on having MSF and the OS on the same drive? The old school thinking from the HDD-era on having the OS on a separate drive really does not apply anymore. In the old days, you didn't want the heads shuttling back and forth between the OS and the sim software, causing delays in access time. On an SSD, it's all random access, and the bandwidth available on an SSD (and especially an NVME drive) is so huge that both the OS and the sim can run without any impact to the other. The only benefit I can think of is that keeping the OS on a smaller SSD makes it easier/faster to do backups of the OS drive, which is something I do much more often than I once did given Windows 10's propensity to auto-install boogered-up updates that break stuff. Perhaps there's some risk involved, as noted by w6kd, but I've transferred OS's this way fairly often myself and never ran into issues. 2 minutes ago, w6kd said: The old school thinking from the HDD-era on having the OS on a separate drive really does not apply anymore. My thoughts exactly. Spindle heads used to be a big factor, but with SSDs they're... nonexistent, so therefore not a factor. I keep them separate for ease of backups/replacement disks if needed.
September 14, 20205 yr Author I am only getting 1 NVME though (the WD SN750 1tb 3.0 x 4), so if I keep that for OS and MSF only, I should have lots of space to play with. And I think @w6kd gives good advice when it comes to just scrapping the old os and start with a clean slate. That rang a bell with me 🙂 Andreas Stangenes http://www.youtube.com/user/krsans78 Add me on gamertag: Bullhorns78
September 14, 20205 yr A few more tips for rebuilding fresh--go into the P3D controls menu and use the "export" feature to save all your control assignments...then you can quickly re-import them to the new installation. And I always save my entire P3D installation to an external HDD before I deconfigure anything so that I can copy back over any mods I did for aircraft and scenery. I also copy the P3D config files in C:\Users\...\Roaming\Lockheed Martin Prepar3D vX\ and the P3DvX files and Addons folders in the main Documents folder in case I need to go back and re-create something I had done before.
