Displayed FPS values are not your real FPS in MSFS

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I ran few tests on the Sim at all types of flights measuring the FPS both with NVIDIA HUB FPS counter and with the MSI afterburner / RivaTuner Statistics and I got to conclusion
that the FPS shown is not the real FPS and misleading numbers (at least in my case) when using external FPS counter tools.
when using the developer mode FPS counter, it seemed to be more accurate and make more seance.

here are the details of the use cases i ran and why I have reached to this conclusion.

1. i flown into downtown New York, dodging between the buildings on my DA40 in order to get the most FPS impact i could and even though my FPS showed being 32FPS at most times (some times it dropped to 23-26FPS),
it felt more like 15 FPS based on the slowness and lags (trust me I know what 20+ FPS feels compared to 15FPS, had this my entire time in FSX/P3D, I am an expert).

2. this was the nail in the coffin for me to conclude this. I loaded my plane on some airport in Papua and the FPS showed around 43FPS.
the 40-43 FPS pretty much remained stable throughout my short 5nm radius flight i did, which is fine. but here is the juicy part.
if I open up the VFR map in the top menu bar and than i pop it out from the screen as a separated window (in my case i dragged it to my second monitor), the FPS jumped to 67FPS on average.
both in the air and on the ground where it was around 40-43FPS without the VFR mad as a separated window,
the 67 FPS was showing on the main Simulator window both in NVIDIA HUB and MSI afterburner. same if i did in New York, i had around 25-30fps in the city, popped out the VFR map and i got around 47FPS,
even though it for sure did not feel like 47FPS, not even a 25-30 FPS, but more like 18FPS.

My conclusion is that the FPS we are seeing is not the real FPS and misleading information, at least in my case using external FPS tools for the following reasons:

1. The fact that I am getting  hugs lags and slowness (like a 10-15FPS behavior) in the city but yet it shows 30+ FPS.
2. once there is a case which the FPS counter values/numbers are screwed up and changed because of an action in the game that was taken,
even if it's a bug or not. who know what else or other parameters could change the FPS values shown in the SIM screen.
Hence, it is no longer a defiant absolute numbers you can relay on depicting your true FPS in the SIM.

You should only relay on the In game FPS counter found in the developer mode

here is a short video i captured showing use case No. 2

I would assume , based on your video and narrative that the FPS is linked to the window that is in focus, in this case, the vfr screen.

that is what i would assume as well, but it doesn't explain to me why i get hugs lags and slowness (like a 10-15FPS behavior) in the city but yet it shows 30+ FPS.

the second thing is, once there is a case which the numbers are screwed up and change because of an action in the game that was taken,
who know what else or other parameters could change the FPS values shown in the SIM screen, hence it is no longer a defiant numbers you can relay on,  depicting you the true FPS in the SIM.

We found in the beta that when you have another screen open the sim doubles the frame rate because it's counting the frame rate from the VFR window and adding. The frame rate is accurate if you have one screen open.

still that doesn't explains use case 1, why i get hugs lags and slowness (like a 10-15FPS behavior) in the city but yet it shows 30+ FPS.

Have you compared to the internal FPS display which you can activate in developer mode?

Can't remember exactly at the moment, but when you have dev mode enabled, it's in one of the menus in the dev menu bar (something like "show FPS").

Also you can measure frames using Windows Menu key + G when you enable Windows Game Bar. You can then set your preferences as desired. I happen to have an X Box controller for views and it works great with the Drone camera but also I can assign the FPS toggle to the main button on the controller. The pop up gives CPU, GPU, RAM usages as well as FPS. If you click on FPS it shows a moving log of the frames as well.

ok, done. the internal FPS of Dev mode shows the correct FPS. check out my updated video on my 1st post

tried it, I wasn't able to make it work. it captures the FPS, but as soon as i pop out a window (VFR Map) the windows FPS counter is stuck and no longer captures FPS
and is stuck on the last FPS value it captures. even after i close the VFR map window.

ok, did some more testing and flying in condense area (NYC in my case) where my true FPS was 16FPS (dev mode showed 16FPS and it really felt like 16FPS) ,MSI afterburner / RivaStatistics and Nvidia Hud both showed i was around 32FPS.

that brings me to a conclusion that it could not be used for reliable FPS counter for true MSFS FPS values.

I've seen some weirdness using EVGA Precision X1 with my 2080 as well.  If I don't have Precision running before firing up the sim, it won't even show the overlay.  If I get it up and running so it's showing, it does seem to match the sim's FPS counter, however I noticed some real weirdness, if you pop out a gauge or pop out the ATC window, you know the function that lets you drag them to multiple monitors etc, it displayed an overlay in both that and the main screen and reported 1000's of FPS lol.

that is one of the use case i saw too, that is why you can't relay on those FPS counters that runs outside of the SIM, you just don't know what can effect their result values

Up to the point where you tried the VFR map, was the Windows Game Bar FPS counter appearing to be giving an accurate count, or was it off like the MSI and NVIDIA tools?
