August 15, 20205 yr Hello, On some of my aircraft, the radomes are black. I have seen this on a couple of them, and I don't know what to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. "An optimist built the airplane, a pessimist built the parachute."

August 15, 20205 yr They are often black on the real aeroplane. That's because they are frequently made from materials which are naturally black (typically carbon composites), or they are sometimes coated with an rubberised anti-erosion protection layer which is also black. Beyond this, matt black also serves as an anti-dazzle measure similar to the anti-glare panel in front of the cockpit windscreen which is also black. Years ago, people would not paint over the black because the paint layer might have metallic content which could attenuate the radar signal, which is why unpainted black noses are frequently seen on older jet fighters, but less so these days because of modern developments in paint coverings which don't affect the signal.
