I wonder how deserts will be depicted?

I remember, that I was always disappointed of how deserts was shown in FSX/P3D. Maybe I just have too high expectations... 🙂

An excellent point, they still have to say what resolution of mesh they use.

Hopefully a great LOD with this sort of accuracy:

Halong Bay in which I swam a couple of times very, very long ago and Guilin that I  never saw in real   😉...

I proposed Victoria Falls above, because they really need a sharp resolution mesh to be rendered as they deserve.

EDIT we focus on photogrammetry, Azure and all that stuff but a good mesh is important too !

I have a feeling, that MFS won't be utilizing 'mesh' as you and I know it from the FSX/P3D engine.

Scenery is extruded (using AI) from analysis of existing satellite imagery into some kind of 3D representation. I actually think Asobo told us a little about this procedure in one of the videos.

Apparently, this i how Google does it:

Quote

Satellites collect 2D imagery, which is laid around the globe like an orange peel. The 3D imagery, however, is gathered via airplane, similar to how Google Street View cars grab photos from the ground. The images are overlapped, pieced together to show depth, and covered with texture.

... but I'm sure that Microsoft/Bing would be utilizing a similar approach.

Quite impressive actually, that it can be done.

Impressive and maybe more efficient to render small karstic reliefs as shown by F737NG in Vietnam or China or even smaller ones like the Utah Bryce Canyon pinnacles.

As I recall, the first addons that I ever used were the FSGenesis meshes in 2k2  and it really changed the way we saw the world outside of the cockpit. So lets hope that the extrusion tech is as good as fine meshes, 10 m or below, we find today.

It's good enough to show buildings and trees, apparently.

Let's hope and wait and see... I'm optimistic.

Alpha 1 will almost certainly have limited locations/aircraft etc.

Well, the pre-alpha press demo they did a couple months ago, they were allowed to go anywhere, though they were warned some areas were still a WIP.

Dubai! They’ve only showed a snippet of Palm Jumeirah islands in the E3 trailer. I hope they hand crafted the Burj Khalifa, the worlds tallest tower, like they did with other important monuments and buildings across the world.

I fully expect it to be messy at some spots in the world, but that's not Asobo's fault. One big advantage is that once new imagery is captured it can be imported to MSFS.

I just hope that people won't bash the simulator because of satellite inaccuracies.

So when looking up places on Bing in Aerial View I see a top down view of say KMEM, Memphis International Airport ( FedEx Hub also ) when I look at it I see the control tower from the top down of course, but I can change the view to Birds Eye View. Will we be able to fly low and see the detail of items say like a control tower? No matter just having the streets and other land marks correct is gonna be awesome to me 🙂 Was just wondering? Both Bing maps aerial!

KMEM birds eye view:

I also looked up the telescope in Puerto Rico and all I could see was a Top Down View, ( no birds eye available ) and there wasn't much there but the top of the telescope and a ton of trees. But once again, if that's all I have it's better then what we have now, and should improve over time right? I also looked up Niagra Fall's!

Also Rio de Janeiro is gonna be cool, I hope!

I second that and would add Tianyan in SW China, which is even larger than Arecibo, 500 m vs 305 m. The AI may have a hard time understanding what are these very large dishes  horizontal on the ground.

That a very interesting question which deserves a thread of its own. It would go south rapidly though.

We will go from the amazement phase to a more critical phase in the months to come. It is only natural. There are already things that I don’t care much for in the new sim, mostly the blobby trees (basically a satellite imagery rendering inaccuracy of sort !)

Inaccuracies, not Asobo’s fault ?  They make choices, they must own them.  I hope that MS will be smart enough to open a dedicated line to users to collect the unavoidable accuracies and correct them on regular updates.
