A 7700K runs faster than an 8700k in many cases.

Incorrect. They are equal clock for clock, yet the 8700K is on a newer node and has higher percentages of chips breaking the 5GHz barrier -- Plus two extra cores. It's a better CPU in every way.

was that a manual overclocking or done auto through BIOS?, what brand (manufacturer) is your motherboard?

You have to use a 370 type motherboard

agree, i replaced my 5.3ghz 7700k to a I9 7920X at 5.0ghz 2x1080TI sli was lucky to get one for free.

if i have to pay for the cpu it been a 8700K

the 7920k is a beast sligtly faster IPC at same frq to 7700k and 8700k for sli with 1080TI is 2-3% faster 2x16 lanes to 2x8 lanes for the 7700k

conclusion the 7920k at 5ghz 2x1080TI SLI is faster then my 5,3ghz 7700k with 2x1080TI SLI

is it worth it no way , to much money if you most pay yourself the 8600k or 8700k is the way to go , most bung for bucks.

Iam not suprized that if you upgrade from a SandyB Ivy Haswell they gone exited for the new performance level.

Idle and under load, for example using PD3 and using stress tools.

Also state your current cooling solution.
