Pure and hopefully speculation on the future of P3D

I am still scratching my head here.why is everyone worried about possible changes to licensing by LM when they have indicated there will be none?

The funny thing is, the only developer who openly raised the fear of changes to EULA are the ones who changed their own EULA months after they had released a product!

You need to understand the commercial reasons behind everything you see, there is a reason why P3D cannot sell to entertainment market, yes, think about why, your first guess should be correct, and if it is, you will probably understand you fit the category who can use and enjoy this product.

There are more and more developers providing installers for P3D, Aerosoft and their upcoming Airbus will be P3D compatible, the new BAe146 is P3D licensed.

So enjoy what is out there. If you wish to try P3D, do so, if you don't, then don't, but please stop trying to second guess what Lockheed Martin will do because "so and so thinks they might", truth is nobody but LM knows, and they have been open enough to tell us.

Will, good post BUT it's not about changing the licensing, it's about enforcing it, and that is one of the MAIN reason why a company like PMDG is not getting on board.

Of course LM will not cut you off because you are enjoying their product and of course more 3PD will make their addons compatible for P3D, why not...I mean why will they turn their back to more money, they don't care (for now) if LM in the future cut some simmers off because they can't produce proof of their enrolment in a school as long as they are making money for themself.

I don't think PMDG is second guessing the way LM is wording (can I say wording?) their licenses. The day LM will make it clear that everybody can use their licenses the way they see fit PMDG will also jump in to make money, after all they are in business to do so right?

Why dosnt LM market and liscense the p3d as an entertaiment product?

I think it's quite simple and obvious.

They dont want to the product regarded as a game. They want a simulator and they want the product regarded as such.

LM is not trying to break into the gaming market and imho, that is a good thing.

To me the future of affordable realistic flight simming looks very bright and I'm glad LM has jumped on board.

Alain, we could say the same thing for Microsoft, if they decide to venture into the Flight Simulator game again, all they have to do is release a new SP for FSX with a new EULA forbidding the use of third party dlls to oush everyone towards MS Flight or any new platform of theirs and it is good bye PMDG, Captain Sim, FS2Crew, goodbye hobby.

Should we sit in our corners and worry about it or get on with what is here and now?

If PMDG or Captain Sim or anyone else decide to stay away it is their choice, but it does not mean they are correct or incorrect in their appraisal of the future of the platform, they do not work for LM or Microsoft, all they do is use tools and programs someone else wrote so they can put together a package that works in someone else's simulator platform, and we just use whatever is in front of us. The only ones who can tell us the future of their program is the manufacturer themselves and so far the future path is fantastic.

Will, of course nobody know the future, PMDG want LM to clear things up (wording) so they will not have to worry about the future, something LM is not welling to do, simple as that.

"Should we sit in our corners and worry about it or get on with what is here and now?"

I've never said you should, you (we) can make your own decisions.

"all they do is use tools and programs someone else wrote so they can put together a package that works in someone else's simulator platform"

Correct me if I'm wrong but PMDG did not make addons for P3D, simmers are playing with PMDG addons to make them work in P3D and that's in itself opening another can of worms...I'll leave it at that.

Like I said before the bottom line is this, there is two camp here, the camp who read what ever they want in the LM license to satisfy their own purposes and the camp who do not read more then what's written.

Be safe flying.

How about we all just have a worm-can opening competition? Opening worm cans is ever so much fun =).

Alain, you forgot the third camp. These are the people who go around parrotting the unsubstantiated and unprofessional line of Bravo Sierra put out by ego-fueled people with their own financial agendas. They are meaning no harm, I'm sure...

And since I'm on a roll... Why is it that there are so many people and I mean sooooo many, who would cringe and say naughty things if you told them they were flying a (smaller than a 757, but bigger than a 717) in a computer game. Their rebuttal would be that it's NOT a game, it's a simulator! And yet here comes P3D and those who cringe above are now so willing to say that it's a game. Wonder why that is? I really do, as the logic/common sense thing does not play out there.

:good: ...not to many simmers mentionned in your post replied to it, did they 80P , that's probably a to big of a worm to swallow for them...... :spiteful:

Like the rest of you, as a long-time user of the FS series (and like many of you, also a pilot) I recently discovered P3D and find it an improvement over FSX, assuming you have the base FSX with no add-ons. Eventually FSX will die out, as as an accumulation of hardware and OS limitations kills it. So having P3D as a back up plan can't hurt.

As to the game vs. sim discussion, my feeling is that LM says P3D is a commercial simulator, because they would rather sell x copies for $199 than 10*x copies for $60. You would think otherwise, but as a software provider, if you cater to a more casual market (what has been termed here as "gamers"), the software support headaches increase exponentially. Besides, calling it a "commercial simulator" somehow makes the user base more comfortable with shelling out $199. Higher price tags tend to have the aroma of exclusivity.
