Review of P3D with Orbx. Any Volunteers?

Featured Replies

Looks stuttery to me. You should lock down the FPS to 30.

Ben, FPS at unlimited was for testing....

Well, I'll ask you the same thing as I asked on Aerosoft forum and here on Prepar3D forum (you should not have any problems with that since you have a top of the line PC), PLEASE make a vid using Prepar3D and Orbx scenery (KHQM) everything maxed out (all boxes ticked, bloom +++) but car traffic at 20% (you can lock your FPS at 30 for what I care) and post it here so we all can see how stuttering free and smooth Prepar3D is,....nobody from Aerosoft or here showed me a Prepar3D vid yet...please.....

Alain, that's a nice video. Would greatly appreciate a tutorial from you on how to achieve that throughout the whole of FSX, as I've always had insurmountable issues with the DX10 version.

I would start by using DX9.

I'm now in sim heaven thanks to MSFS 2024 and hundreds of add-ons!

I would start by using DX9.

José old friend, there is no way you'll get the same perf. in DX9 as in DX10 unless you keep some sliders more to the left and forget about bloom and other eye candy.

I'll PM you my settings in the Nvidia control panel as soon as I have a sec., I also use the latest driver from Nvidia, see, a driver may work good on somebody's machine and not on others as we all have different hardware, same with the Nvidia control panel, different hardware = different settings.

You will have to play with the settings a lot to find the sweet spot, also I do not have any tweak in the fsx.CFG folder but DisablePreload=1 and AffinityMask=1364 that's it, when you start tweaking to much you screw up things...

DX10 is not perfect BUT a lot smoother compare to DX9 if you like eyes candy, still some flickering runways but in the air I can care less about that, I have to say that I don't have them wit Orbx airports, only with default airports, also I like the cockpit shadow in all DX10 compatible planes, the immersion effect is a lot better.

Here is another vid. I made, night flying (still testing) with car traffict at 60% for immersion, I get a little more stutters but again, if you try this in DX9 you'll be looking at a slide show, also notice that I do not have the flickerings lights at night....kaboom.....landing was a little tricky as I cranked up the wind effect...

Thanks Alain. I look forward to hearing from you. It will be fun to try this.

Actually, after an Easter weekend playing around with P3D, I've concluded that while it definitely is the future and has superior visuals and stability, the amount of pfaffing about to get it to work as one would wish is just too time consuming and, even when something's installed, it can still do strange things.

The universality of FSX has pulled me back over the course of the past few days. I'll definitely keep experimenting with P3D and I am sure that, before very long, I will completely migrate.

At the end of the day, I want to fly rather than spending valuable leisure time under the hood of the sim. I've done far too much of that with FSX and, at least I am now at a point where it doesn't give me too many problems.

I'll run with both for the time being and see what happens in terms of when the time is right to completely make the switch. My feelings right now are that it is simply a little too early.

Two things I noticed in your vid, Alain.

1 - The ground textures are so dark! How did you get them so dark... I mean they are black. Luv it. Want it!

2. - Those strobes must be pretty bright as I could see the light hitting the ground, say a thousand feet below!

1 - I don't know, maybe it's a DX10 effect?

2 - A2A lights, I like to see where I land.... :Nail Biting:
