The Outerra 3D Planetary Engine

An unofficial forum for the Outerra 3D planetary engine.  Website - http://www.outerra.com/

  1. Started by cameni,

Hi everyone @AVSIM. I'm one of the Outerra founders and lead developers, and I would like to thank here to AVSIM staff for creating this forum dedicated to Outerra, and also use it to present our plans and to receive valuable feedback from flight sim users. Let me start with a brief history of the engine for people that might be interested in how it came to be and where it's now (and where it is going). Outerra started in 2008 as a hobby project, evolving from an earlier fractal terrain program. This was the first iteration of the to-be Outerra engine in summer 2008: It was a hobby project back then, and probably a very few people would have guessed it's got an…

Official forum thread (including download link) Wikipedia: The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is a single-seat, twin-engine stealth ground-attack aircraft formerly operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) developed from the Have Blue technology demonstrator and produced by Lockheed's Skunk Works. It is the first operational aircraft to be designed around stealth technology. This plane is an unofficial conversion for the F-117A Nighthawk from AlphaSim/Virtavia. The conversion is done with Phil Perrott's Permission at virtavia.com. Version 1.0 released on February 24, 2015 Notes: - The code that display digits on the panels is an improved version of Uriah's c…

  3. As Outerra moves forward, Outerra users/modders are beginning to see a need to codify the rapidly accumulating knowledge of how to create content for the program, so that newcomers will have an easier path in not having to all "Start from scratch" repeatedly recreating the same wheel. Hopefully this will help in creating more uniformity in coding, which is, as to be expected at this early date, a bit chaotic. This thread, started by Uriah509, begins in the Outerra forum here: http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?action=unread Hey everyone! I am starting this thread for the discussion and development of advanced Flight Dynamics Models (FDMs), and for documentin…

As the generous contributions of New models to the Outerra Universe continues, its become increasingly more difficult to keep track of new and even old releases as the information is buried in ever-growing threads. To combat this, some users have generously offered to open "clearinghouse" sites where the various types of models can be located and downloaded in an easier and more coherent manner. This thread on the Outerra forum gives more information: http://forum.outerra.com/index.php?topic=3005.msg31938#new Accordingly, User AnimatetSyn has opened a model collection site located here: http://www.camdavre.com/ At the same time User: Levi who has converted man…

  5. Outerra has posted an interesting article. What stood out to me the most was the section at the end of the article titled "Other News." Take a look: http://outerra.blogspot.com/2014/02/2013-retrospective-2014-look-ahead.html

That singular thread, while it might be an amazingly interesting read (no, probably not)... isn't really going to get things going in here. So... to see what happens... I'll ask a question, or two. Say I want to use the Outerra engine... can I set up land class information? Generate buildings and roads and water? In the area of creating the visible world, how far can I go with the Outerra engine at this point in time?

Search for: C:/users/Yourname/outerra/world.cfg open with Notepad++ The relevant settings are: virtelev = (virtual_elevation) { virtelev = (float2) { x = 3500.0, y = 0.0 }, virtcurv = 5000.0, snowmin = 4900.0, snowsat = 6000.0 } Snow is generated from snowmin elevation, full snow is at snowsat elevation. The elevation is virtual, equals the real one only at the equator normalized on the equator, and with rising latitude it gets higher by virtelev.x*cos(lat) + virtelev.y*cos^2(lat) Visual Aid! (Thanks Awac9) You can play with the numbers to vary the snow cover and even the roads and runways can get heavy dustings! Hopefully the d…
