DX-10 Discussions, Hints and Help

Interested in getting DX10 Technology working properly in FSX | FSX-SE?  This forum is for general discussion of how to get DX10 working properly and settings.

  1. Started by SteveFx,

I have placed several posts on my blogs which cover my testing of DX10 and AA. I have one computer, one graphics card a small 1680x 1050 20inch monitor, no background in computer graphics and no particular desire to annoy anyone. I do not claim that these results are definitive or representative of what anyone else experiences... But this is what I believe that I found on my AMD 7750 graphics card using CCC. How this relates to Nvida cards I have absolutely no idea. Firstly testing with DX9 1. I can tell the difference between 2xAA and 4xAA MSAA 2. I struggle to tell the difference between 4xAA and 8xAA with a static image (this is looking n…

Hi all I have a GTX 580 with drivers 301.24 and in DirectX 10 mode vSync isn't working and I get a lot of tearing. I have my FSX profile setup according to Word Not Allowed's guide with vSync forced at 1/2 screen refresh rate. Works fine in DX9 but not DX10 mode. Is this typical? I'm using Shader Fix 3.0.0 from Steve too and Windows 7 64bit Pro.

  3. I don't know if this is too much to ask, but I was wondering if anyone running dx10 would have the time to post a bit of a "comparison/review" between dx9 and dx10 with some screenshots, FPS/performance/smoothness comparisons running the same FSX settings and similar AA/AF settings. I think it would be a great insight to people to have a one stop shop to just get an indication of the actual differences being seen. I for one would appreciate it. Cheers!

Paul I'm following your DX10 Notes guide and want to back up the files you mention including simconnect.xml however I can't locate that particular file in the .../Roaming/Msoft/FSX folder. Any idea why its not there? I have found the other FSX files but before proceeding I want to make sure that I can recover my DX9 settings if this doesn't work out for me. Regards, Brent

Hello Paul, Allow me to recommend a small addittion to your excellent guide. Apart from the FSX folder in C:\....AppData\Roaming...etc., which you advise to back-up, there is also an FSX folder in C:\AppDataLocal\Microsoft (Shaders and Shaders10). As Steve explains in his readme, his 'fix' makes changes in at least one file located in the latter folder. It therefore seems wise to back-up that folder as well, in case anyone would like to revert to DX9. Kind regards, René

My tentative start on this most interesting graphics 'upgrade' was to check that DX10 was on my setup, as recommended. It is, but a check run produced a black screen. The aircraft sound was there, but no graphics. So I don't know how it would look. Is this unusual? Could it be that another utility I am using is in conflict? Recently I have installed OpusFSX. Could that be a problem? Great work by all concerned. I look forward to getting it to work, but I hesitate to move on until this point is answered. Regards Frank

Would someone please explain to me what these two things do and how they should be used as far as DX10 is concerned? Also which .cfg bit should I be looking at? I assume it's in users\AppData\Roaming etc. where there are two fsx bits. One is 'fsx' type CFG File and the other is 'fsx.CFG' type document . Again thanks for help. (Win 7 64bit)

I finally ended up re-installing FSX after trying everything to get my DX-10 Preview back. Well, its back and I'm finally getting to see what all the excitement is about in being able to use DX-10. After using it in different areas and times of the day in FSX, I noticed that the bloom effect wasn't as good as what I had using the ENB in DX-9. I compared screenshots in the same areas and times of day using both the DX-9 and DX-10 blooms. The DX-10 looks a little washed out in comparison. So, my question is... Is it possible to tweak the settings of the bloom effect of DX-10 like we can with the ENB series? I think this may give the best of both worlds if its possible. …

Only in DX10 and, similar to the light issue, only at certain angles, usually at ground level in airports. Turning off car traffic gets rid of this or run in DX9 of course.

I thought I had only FSX textures on my system but just found DX9 textures at Victoria BC. Forgot I had the Victoria addon installed. Looks like I'm going to have to activate and install my Addon_Converter afterall! Best regards, Jim

Just started trying out DX10 and thanks for all the info put on this forum. I love the increase of FR's and I've been trying the demo of ConverterX - for me this has cured the 'no textures' on AI aircraft ( very important for me). One thing is I have no progressive taxi, either with the default DX10 or with converter X. Not a big problem of course but is there any answer to that? I'm running a rather tired i7 960 @ 2.65 and a GTX 285 so I can't expect too much. Thank you.

Now that Steve has pretty much fixed much of DX10, thought it might be a nice idea to have the pro and cons list. My system is sort of down at the moment so can't really confirm things but from what everyone reports.... DX10 Pros -runs faster -better effects; water, bloom lighting, other? Cons -can't force anti-aliasing properly hence more shimmering -many addon planes' textures are missing (planes need proper DX10 compatible textures) -plane shadows on ground not anti-aliased I think the above is right? What am I forgetting? Corrections? Additions?

Hello guys/gals I moved to DX10 and my Cessna 441 Conquest won’t show exterior textures (known issue). So now I need a replacement turboprop with DX10 support. (Single or twin) Could you please opine on the Flight1 Pilatus-PC12, Carenado C90, and the Realair Turbine Duke. If you have any other, please comment on it too. Thank you.

  14. I tried the new DX10 shader fix tonight, and i have to say that i am VERY impressed with what HAS to be the fix of the century for flight sim by stevejp! It gets my vote for contributor of the year hands down, as this fix works, makes FSX beautiful in DX10 preview mode and has my fps locked and steady at 30fps! heres a shot of me in the Bellanca Scout on final approach to KCLM (Port Angeles, WA) This is what DX10 looks like for me..a couple things to note on that shot, Bloom is on, something i have never used due to the fps hit in dx9, and all settings are maxed, except for the water as i prefer X1 max water. and although i dont have the fps counter o…

  15. For long I tried to use DX10 preview in FSX. But there were several issues that kept me from really doing it. The more experienced simmers here will know what I'm talking about.Since a few days I found the solutions, that make the experience with DX10 preview more than acceptable for me. I'd like to share this, for those who are interested.I started wiht Addon Converter X and it really works well!! Be sure to read and apply the instructions though! This not to expensive tool converts the dx9 textures of scenery (like airports, yes also third parties like Aerosoft and UK2000) to DX10 textures, so you don't have gray blocks with dusk, dawn and night.another negative effect …

After suffering recently with an undiagnosed performance problem with my FSX installation, I thought why not give this DX10 a go. Wow! I am so impressed with the quality of FSX as a result ... nice clear, sharp images and the best thing, it has improved my performance noticeably. For me it made the difference between an average FPS of 4-7 to 28-30! It's nice to finally fly free of studders. So ... highest kudos to both Steve, and Paul for making this all possible. I will admit, that this forum, for the less than savvy computer person is quite daunting with it's quite complicated and terminology heavy conversations. Hopefully those with the know how can dumb it down f…

  17. EDIT: The file is now in the AVSIM Library and you no longer need to do the edits as Steve lists below. I have been doing lots of experimentation with FSX, which I have documented on a blog at http://stevesfsxanal....wordpress.com/ I have an experimental shader change that seems to fix the DX10 runway flashing and also the runway markings overlay. However there are no guarantees - it may break something else - There is a limit to how much I can test it. So try this at you own risk!! If you havent recompiled shaders before it might be best to wait until someone more experience reports back. To try the experimental change 0. Locate an airport where y…

  19. I'm impressed with the smoothness of DX10 and FSX after making the necessary changes and using the modified files put together by stevejp. Thank you for all your hard work! However some of my favourite older aircraft now have all white textures inside and out which is a bit of a killer for me as I love flying my De Havilland Chipmunk, HS748, RealAir 172 and other pre-fsx aircraft. I have tried the addon x demo and even though it replaces some of the textures they all appear slightly transparent so have uninstalled it and am hoping to find another way of getting older aircraft textures to show up in DX10. Any ideas? Regards Adam

Hi, Main problem I have in DX10, is the appearance of the coastlines, as shown in the picture. I'm using Ultimate terrain Europe and GEX. Could it be that these are not DX10 ready or is there another possible cause? Any help would be much appreciated. Jos
