Graphics card defect?

Featured Replies

I've been working with Varjo and the computer builder on this issue for over a month now, and no one has made progress. It's a lighting issue in VR, and I suspect it's due to a faulty graphics card because it occurs in both the HP Reverb G2 and the Varjo XR-3 on one computer but not on another computer with identical settings, graphics driver, and Windows updates. Here's a video detailing the issue:

The suspect graphics card has passed several diagnostics and tests that Varjo and the builder asked me to run. I've found plenty of other tests with my own searches, but I don't really know what tests would be appropriate to run on it. This is either a rare issue or I haven't figured out how to describe it well, because my internet searching has so far turned up empty. If it is the graphics card, it seems that I'm going to have to find proof on my own to get a warranty replacement.

Both computers have the same driver, so swap the cards and see if the problem follows. The first thing I would do is delete your shaders and let the sim rebuild a new set. Looks like a VR software problem to me as the sim is fine until you switch modes but the best way to know for sure is to switch cards.

The problem didn't follow the graphics card. Based on that, the computer builder offered to warranty replace the motherboard. That prompted me to check for BIOS updates. A new one was released this month, so I flashed that, but the problem remains. Another interesting detail that I noticed during the swap test is that the lighting issue is the same even when using the HMD emulator mode to run VR. I'll update this thread once the replacement mobo is tested.

I watched most of this video and being a Aero owner and a 3090, I don't think I have seen this before with me.

The only thing I picked up and its probably nothing to do with this problem, is that are you able to enable your resizable bar setting in your bios as its currently set to No. ( setting visible in your Nvidia control panel )

I do not have P3D installed anymore and again its probably not headset related but I used to turn off most of the shadows and reflection settings within your P3D settings, I found them unecessary for VR flying and not worth the frame rate hit.

I got the replacement mobo installed yesterday. The computer had been experiencing frequent BSOD events with obscure errors in addition to the lighting problem in VR, and no BSODs occurred in my first four hours of testing, but the lighting problem remains. @Steve_Ellis Thanks for the suggestion on resizable BAR. I haven't checked that yet, but it does point me toward BIOS settings in general, which I haven't considered at all to this point. It does feel like I'm grasping at straws right now, but there's something specific to this machine's configuration that's causing it.

I finally discovered the source of the lighting issue. When Virtual Reality Settings>Eye Tracking>EnableVariableRateShading is set to Yes, the flickering happens. Setting it to No and restarting P3D (it won't go away if you just click Apply and OK - this is why I didn't discover it the previous time I changed every available setting) got rid of it.

Thats great to hear. I didnt think it was a hardware issue from what i was seeing,  so happy to see that you were able to get to the bottom of it.
