HiFlyer,

I am really interested in the Quest 2 but as I am only wanting it for FlightSim purposes, I really, really want handtracking as I believe this would negate the use of controllers in a cockpit. Is handtracking available for the quest 2 and at what cost approximately.

I would, I believe also prefer the 256GB version (AUD639)  There is also a premium cable to link to computer at AUD129 (I am unsure how they have managed to put a couple of kilos of 158 carot gold(LOL) into that cable to justify the price but would this be worth the price as an upgrade to performance) These are Amazon AU prices so I would suspect that they may be cheaper elsewhere.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and the relative values in comparison to other headsets.

Thanks mate

Well....

I would be leery of this for PC flightsim purposes. When using the link cable, what you are receiving is essentially a compressed video stream rather than native pc processing like a RIFT or other PC-Centric headset, and there are going to be noticeable compression artifacts.

Enough to make the experience indistinguishable from that of the original Quest, for the purpose you are thinking of.

Oculus is promising to update the data stream to more closely match the capabilities of the Quest 2, but how much you believe and trust that depends on how much you believe and trust Oculus, at this point.

There is also the matter of the new requirement for a facebook account, which may bother some.

All in all, this feels like a retreat by Oculus from the PC marketspace, and I myself would much prefer the opportunity to try it out first, if possible, before pulling the trigger on a purchase.

HiFlyer,

Well that put somewhat of a dampener on my expectations mate. My next alternative was the Pimax 5K plus until I saw them on Amazon AU for only AUD4589.00 and when you compare that price to USD599 it would appear that there is some money grabbing happening here.

Given that my priority would be to incorporate handtracking, what would your recommendation be .... I have not yet seen the video above as yet.

Hi Tony,

Do you mean AUD$1,589.00?

YMMB,

WOW did I stuff that up.

There are actually 2 figures quoted at Amazon. one is actually for AUD1599.00 and that is the one I meant to cite. The other is actually for AUD4589.00

Either one is hugely expensive. Given the exchange rate, I estimate freight and profit account for around AUD800.00

AND, I do not know if I can attach handtracking to either LOL That is most important for me.

I liked the sound of the Quest 2 until I was told that the AUD129.00 brings the system up to Quest 1 standards LOL

Maybe the one released with MSFS is the one to go for .... I wonder if it will have the same amount of BUGs lol

Cheers mate

Hello again,

Back to handtracking.

I have just discovered a video ("Nathie" on youtube) which clearly demonstrates handtracking is included, and appears to be quite good, in the Quest 2.

For HiFlyer, Can you please clarify for me, leaving out the compressed steaming part, would the Quest 2 256gb,  better or not that the original quest. I guess I am referring to the resolution, the 256gb aspect, and I am unsure if the original Quest included Handtracking.

In any case, is the new "vive2" ???? which is supposedly going to be released, with VR in MSFS, going to be any better?  I realize that this may well be speculation only though.

Specifically, which VR handset would you actually recommend and why, if I may ask.

Regards

HiFlyer,

Thanks mate, I have actually seen this one before, and, honestly,it was an influence on consideration of the Quest2 in the first place.

To my knowledge though, Quest2 is the only headset that supports hand tracking in this trio.

I was actually wanting to know which other headsets support hand tracking and, probably more importantly, whether a wait for the introduction for VR into MSFS which will also introduce the HP Reverb G2 is justifiable. I can find no information however, regarding handtracking support. Pimax is out of my price range and again, I do not know if it supports handtracking.

Any advice and or recommendations would be most welcome. Please PM me if you do not wish to make a public recommendation.

The resolution is better. The deep blacks are a bit greyer but not greatly so, and yup, the original had hand tracking.

If hand tracking is the major concern, then the Quest is your best bet short of leap-motion or some funky gloves.

The price is also very good for what you get.

Next in line would be the HP Reverb 2

No native hand tracking on that, though.

HiFlyer,

Thank you so very much for that mate.  I have been muddling around in the dark regarding VR for quite a while now and been totally unable to make a decision.

This has been a huge help to me for which I am extremely grateful.

As far as MSFS is concerned, I think that even if they fix most of the problems, it would be fairly pointless to use in this platform, given that scenery is useless if you cant get your aircraft to fly properly. By that, I mean if you spend all your time whilst in flight, simply trying to restore avionics, and other problems, you do not have time to look at the scenery.  Of course, this is tongue in cheek.

Once problems are solved, VR, DX12, and quality 3PD aircraft are introduced, this will become an even more awesome flight sim platform. In the meantime, I have XPlane and P3dv5 to use.
