Like Grand Theft Auto is a product line, but separately you can buy GTA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc etc. It's like that keep the mind open. No, I'm not getting anything mixed up. I just listened to what they said. They didn't say it's a 10 year product line. They said it was a 10 year product and that that product would recieve constant updates throughout its life. Flight Simulator will be THE product for the next 10 years and I suspect that is why this time around it's called just Flight Simulator and not Flight Simulator 2020 as previous versions have been titled by being coupled to a year or version. You can carry on "expecting" a new release every 2 years. By all means, crack-on. You can also, for whatever reason, dream about paying them for it over and over for all I care but the reality is that that is not their plan. "It's like that" 😉 But thank you for your patronising "product" lesson. I feel I now know far more about the world of commerce because of it. I shall also endeavour to "keep my mind open". 5800X3D - Strix X570-E - 32GB 3600Mhz DDR4 - AMD RX 9070 XT- Samsung 980 Pro x2

They have already stated this new sim will have about a ten year lifespan with continuous support. I expect regular updates and improvements. They'll monetize the franchise via marketplace transactions, and the best way to encourage that is to NOT replace the entire sim every couple of years. That would not inspire confidence in marketplace transactions. As to ray tracing, no not at launch, but I fully expect it to be implemented within a year or two after launch when they go to DX12 eventually.

I suspect this is what they are going for too. They could looking at doing something like Windows 10 where there are one or two major updates each year, but it is still called Windows 10 (in the more traditional Windows update cycle we would be at Windows 12 or so by now). Of this does depend on how they plan to bring in the money to keep the team going.

June 11, 20206 yr 59 minutes ago, andyjohnston.net said: For those of us unfamiliar, what is ray-tracing? Essentially it's a method (software algorithm) in 3d graphics to get hyper realistic visuals. If you develop a 3d scene in a package like 3ds Max you can then generate a ray traced 2d image from an angle you choose. The software algorithm will trace every individual beam of light and where it goes as it bounces around etc. So you end up with an image as though from a real camera with perfect reflections and ambience etc. But the process is heavy and uses up all your computer resources and can take a long time just to generate one 2d image. The idea of ray tracing in real time games/simulators seemed impossible because the performance seemed impossible to achieve. You need at least 24-30 frames every second to get smooth motion. But recently they have discovered some new breakthrough algorithm to produce 3d ray tracing in real time, and with the latest graphics cards and games it's possible. June 12, 20206 yr Speaking of the 10 year plan, has there been a confirmation that Asobo is going to be around for the whole time period or are people just assuming at this point? I'm just hoping MS won't hand it over to a cheaper less capable company to only do minor maintenance or addon stuff. Edited June 12, 20206 yr by Kopteeni
June 12, 20206 yr Ray tracing absolutely obliterates performance. It's the first thing that anyone would turn off the pick up more frames - it's so resource intensive. It'll cut your FPS in half basically. It's also in my view fairly pointless in a flight simulation. The only place you'd possibly notice it is in the cockpit, but even then with good textures and standard lighting you'd do incredibly well to notice a worthwhile difference. Flight sims aren't really what ray tracing is designed for.
