I'm a bit worried it might screw up my complex FSX installation.

I've tried, but get compatibility errors with ORBX scenery.  I just simply opted out of the beta and all is back to normal.

I think that you misunderstand that the beta version of FSX Steam Edition has something to do with "FSX 2020". It does not.

If you have a complex FSX installation and that complex FSX installation is in FSX Steam Edition, then it would be a very bad idea to join the FSX Steam Edition beta.
