Another method to downgrade TTS voices to radio quality with low CPU load

I think there is a much better method that should work:

1. In recent Windows 10 you can specify audio device PER APP. Like this.

2. You can use free Voicemeeter Banana mixer to create/use a separate virtual audio device for P2ATC app. It has built-in EQ. Just cut lows and highs to the max and boost mids and it should emulate radio spectrum. It won't affect main sound or FSFS sound then, coming out on default audio device.

3. I believe Pilot2ATC has a setting for "Radio background sound" for a suitable static file. Together EQ and static should be enough for very convincing radio sound. No need for any VST plugins.

Needs to be tested as latency can become an issue, if it slows down the main audio output, but latency should be lower than using VST plugins anyway.

Also, if using chatter files, EQ should not affect them much, as those frequencies are already absent. If it does - you cut too much!

Good info, will give this a try some time!

Thanks!

I've found I have to go into pilot2atc config and switch away then back to the voicemeeter input to get it working every time. That happens even if I set voicemeeter as the default for pilot2atc in windows advanced sound options.

If it was possible I'd rather convert the actual voice audio files to avoid needing any audio routing software running.
Any help with the above appreciated.

I had so much trouble with voicemeeter on my system.  Distorted sound randomly happening a lot, no matter what device or settings I tried. Doesn't work very well when you have other users who don't understand it either in my opinion.

I found an even easier way which works well enough.  My monitors both have weak little tinny speakers as most do.  I told Pilot2ATC to use one of them along with the static file. My well balanced music and game sounds use my proper speakers.  There are also windows sound enhancements per sound device you can use. Although I think the main radio quality came from the basic rubbishness of the monitor speakers, I also played around with frequency cutoff etc.

Thanks to the OP for the guide. I will humbly offer an alternative application to ImageLine's software which I found to be buggy.

VSThostx64

Seems to be less resource intensive, it's easier to set buffers, you dont need to use DirectSound if you dont want to, and maybe the best part: it minimizes to your tray in windows 🙂

pretty cool, thanks for sharing the link to that software! any chance you know how to save the... well, i dunno what you even call it, the way i've configured the Isotope Vinyl plugin to sound within VSTHost... so that it loads automatically when i open VSTHost? or at least, some sort of file i can open that remembers those settings?

Yup. Click (In menubar) Performance --> Save As

Then, use Performance --> Load or Performance --> Next to load the preset

A tip i have is to save it a few times as a backup in case you accidentally save over your preset.

thank you! 🙂

the virtual-cable driver + "Vinyl" VST plugin + VSTHost is a super easy to set up and EXCELLENT way to make the voices sound like proper radio transmissions, HUGE bump in immersion. i tweaked the vinyl plugin linked in the OP inside VSThost with maximum "wear" and the "1930" setting, and then set Pilot2ATC to use the radio-static-1 wav file included in the installation of P2ATC, at 100 volume. i also use X-ATC-Chatter clips. with those settings, the TTS voices match up pretty much exactly with the general quality and tone of the real ATC clips. super cool.

as a bonus, any app that uses the TTS voices and allows you to choose the audio output device (i.e. the virtual cable device) will work the same way.

Is possible request a radio effect sound feature for p2atc, cause fshub atc has this feature. I have fshub atc too but could not compare to p2atc
