New Denzel Washington Airplane Movie called "Flight"

Featured Replies

Dez is approaching legend status as an actor, if not already. I can't think of any bad movie he has done, including Unstoppable...

I don't mind Hollywoods constant mifs with tech stuff. Movies are storys, not how too's after all. My one any only pet peeve is with motorcycles. Every single cut/scene has the dam thing changing gears... the entire time.. like they have 100 gears or something. Just watch Terminator 2 during the motorcycle and truck chase in the LA River. He-Lary-Us. Little YZ80 had at least a 200 gear trans!!

The move looks great! NOVEMBER?!? That's another lifetime away!

On a side note; Elevator stuck down.. hes flipping the plane over and using trim for level flight and to regain control. The trick will be flipping it back over for the crash landing. LOL... sorry. Of course we all knew that!

As the premise for a story, I actually think the notion of having to flip the thing upside down in order to use the controls in a reverse sense to pull out of a dive is quite inventive and a very smart choice for a plot device.

Even those who don't know much about aeroplane controls know - from countless movies - that you pull back on the stick to make the aircraft come out of a dive, so it is a plot device which everyone who watches the movie will understand, as opposed to having something like a gryoscope on the ADIRU go haywire or whatever. Something like that would lose the audience because most of them wouldn't have a clue about what that would mean, and it is a fundamental part of storytelling to talk to people in terms that they will understand, so it's a great demonstration of economical and intelligent screenwriting exposition - use something which the audience already know.

I loved Crimson Tide also a Tony Scott movie. Yes it was Unstoppable Alan. I would have preferred a little bit of background plot to set up the main plot of the movie.

And it would have been good to have helpers pushing a train up a hill then either losing it downgrade or bringing it to a stand. Nevertheless Denzel is a good actor.

Morgan Freeman is one of the best, or one of my favorites though.

Maybe Denzel should team up with Ridley Scott and do a Bourne/military type of movie. If Bruce Willis and some other legends were in it, it would be awesome.

When was the last time since we have seen authentic flicks such as The Longest Day or The Great Escape, with a huge mega star cast?

In Executive Decision they had Steven Seagal who I like and it made the movie authentic when they killed him off.

Backdraft, another Kurt Russell movie, which was very authentic and had a major star cast, Deniro, Sutherland, Baldwin Russell, etc.

Unstoppable probably takes action too far in trains and should have taken a lesson out of Backdraft. But with Scott who also did The Rock, he is a pure action man.

Will look forward to reading the reviews on here to see if it is at all reasonable to watch.

By the way Alan, great post.

Denzel + 737ngx + Bob Zemeckis as director= win! Worked with him on Back to the Future. He is a superb director with a flare for special effects ( Forrest Gump, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Polar Express), so I think the aircraft effects will look pretty good.

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit

I watched the trailer again today and I think this is what will happen in the film.

1) MD-80 suffers horizontal stabilizer failure, (similar to Alaska flight 261 crash) aircraft nose-dives.

2) Denzel calls full nose down trim and roll the aircraft until it's inverted.

3) Aircraft returns to stable but inverted flight using full forward trim and continues flying at a shallow descent until it's ~1000ft AGL.

4) Denzel rolls the aircraft back to S&L for a crash landing on a field. Everyone survives. (similar to SAS flight 751 crash)

Wow, can't wait!

Happy Flying,

Well at least we know now that Flight will have an airliner with a cockpit, can somebody PM Microsoft? :LMAO:

Because you're not the boss. :Nerd:

Cheers, SLuggy

Just to annoy you.

:LMAO: :LMAO: :LMAO:

Will it be set only in Hawaii... with the possibility of an Alaskan sequel?

I don't think so. They are smarter than that

I love Forrest Gump and Zemeckis.

Back with old Denzel, I agree that 2010's Unstoppable (if that's what you mean when you say Runaway) was disappointing, in spite of some good performances from Denz, Chris Pine and indeed most of the supporting cast. Being a bit of a train buff and knowing the tale of the real incident upon which it was based, I was kind of looking forward to seeing if they could pull it off. Tony Scott is not a bad director, but his MTV-esque jump-cut style of shooting and post-process editing can be a pain in the &@($* to watch sometimes; to be fair it suited Man On Fire very well though, which is another good movie with big Denz in it. But there is nothing one can do to make a story about something that is on rails, from pretty much being a 'story that is on rails', with really only two outcomes possible - they either stop it or they don't. Nevertheless, Denzel Washington has a compelling screen presence and an everyman quality which makes him easy to identify with, so I am looking forward to seeing Flight, because beyond the simple 'will they land it or won't they?' aspect, it seems to also focus a lot on the investigative pressures on pilots who are involved in incidents too, which is an interesting thing to delve into.

For a far better runaway train movie incidentally, one should seek out 1985's wonderful Runway Train, which is based on a story by the legendary movie maker Akira Kurosawa, although sadly not directed by him, instead being made by Andrei Konchalovsky, who pulls some great performances from Jon Voight and Eric Roberts, and the cinematography is excellent.

I'm a huge train buff (just visited Horseshoe Curve a few weeks back) and unstoppable was a good example of "too much Hollywood".. I completely ignored all the operations and technical inaccuracies and knew it would be filmed and written for entertainment only and I still didn't like it. They just over did it everywhere. The final straw and made me firmly apply my hand to my face was the scene of the train making the sharp turn and miraculously balancing on one side of its axles. It was just so over the top stupid at that point.

That aircraft is a prop on a film set. The producers wouldn't put together a 100% accurate Boeing product because Boeing doesn't like to see their product damaged in a film like that. This would be the reason why their are differences with that aircraft on the trailer and a real Boeing aircraft. Showing damaged or destroyed aircraft is bad for Boeing's corporate image. So this would be the reason why this aircraft shows some differences.

This would be the same reason why when you crash an airplane in MS Flight Simulator it doesn't show damage to the aircraft (anymore). The reason for that is the aircraft manufactures really don't like to see their products damaged or destroyed in a flight simulator as well. I think it was MSFS 4 was the last time the sim showed damage when crashing. That was removed as per some of the Aircraft Manufactures request.

I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

That was removed as per some of the Aircraft Manufactures request.

I find myself believing as they would have me believe... when planes crash... there is no damage at all! Silly aint it? But I understand.
