April 23, 201214 yr Hello folks, I'm going to upgrade my monthly sub. to the Academic Version. L/M said that I would have to uninstall the monthly completely, and then install the Academic version. I'm ok with that - My question/s : Can I save my .xml files, sound/gauges/fonts folder from my existing version and paste in my new Academic version - WITHOUT having to start over. I don't have that many add-on's in ways of aircraft but do have the SBSL from FTX, which I can re-install? Your thoughts would be most appreciated. cthiggin Tom Higginbotham - Montgomery, AL, USA
April 24, 201214 yr Hi, You should have no problems copying the folders/files that you mentioned. April 24, 201214 yr Author Mike_CFII_MEL, Thanks so much. I've watched "your" threads and it appears you have P3D "under control" when it comes to add-on's and about everything else. Have a blessed one. cthiggin Tom Higginbotham - Montgomery, AL, USA
April 24, 201214 yr Hi, Just keep in mind, if you copy any scenery/mesh/airports or anything else for that matter that requires entries into FSX's scenery.cfg file, you'll have to edit and/or copy & past these entries into P3D's scenery.cfg file. April 24, 201214 yr Author Hello again, The only scenery I will be using is the Orbx/FTX sceneries and airports. They have SBSL installers so I'm home free on that. I'm not going to use GEX / UTX like in FSX. I really like what P3D has done with their sceneries. I made a boo-boo and installed the monthly in my programs (86) folder. The Academic Version will be in root of C: (I have FSX on it's own Raptor Drive) - Me doesn't think that will really change anything with the folders I'm going to move over for existing aircraft/add-on's etc.? Thanks again so very very much. Any additional info I may need, please let me know. Have a blessed day. cthiggin Tom Higginbotham - Montgomery, AL, USA
April 27, 201214 yr Hi, Just keep in mind, if you copy any scenery/mesh/airports or anything else for that matter that requires entries into FSX's scenery.cfg file, you'll have to edit and/or copy & past these entries into P3D's scenery.cfg file. Hi Mike can't you add sceneries in P3D itself, I seem to remember that you can? Also why not use a program like SCM2004, that's what I use for everything, it lets you manipulate the scenery cfg very easily. You just have to find the scenery cfg(in application data I think, NOT in the main folder) and they put a dummy copy of fs9 there.
April 28, 201214 yr Hi, I like total control over my P3D setup, so I manually install and test everything that does not auto install into Prepar3D. I'm sure there are a few other ways of installing addons into P3D and they may be easier/better than my way, but I started out doing it this way and have grown accustom to doing that way. April 28, 201214 yr Most of the freeware type of scenery for airports and small regional areas can be downloaded, installed into the P3 add-on scenery folder and activated in the scenery library in the normal way. Some are well made and some are ordinary, it's up to us to choose as always. There is no problem at all. For scenery that has an installer then a reg utility (and the FSX app icon in the P3 main folder) will have it autoinstalling into P3 exactly as it does into FSX. I must admit however I prefer sceneries with P3 installers. Orbx has got it covered with their SBSLs though I would love to get YBBN and YMML into P3 as well as the many beaut smaller airports with all the flows doing their thing correctly. I await the migratory tool to enable this to happen. Incidentally the Carenado C90 is a great plane with an awesome HD panel and model. KInd regards, Ian McPhail
