17" over 21" Monitor

Featured Replies

hi,can anyone please tell me what are the main advantages of a 21" monitor over a 17" monitor CRT types for playing Flight Sim. Here in Australia i can pick up the Philips 201P 21inch Monitor for $999 Australian.

In one word - CLARITY! :-). On even the most smallest of gauges and whatnot, I can usually read the labelling and see all the gauges with no problem. For outside or even just looking outside from the cockpit, I get a much more immersive feeling than with the 17". As long as it is a good quality monitor, you really want one of these for FS if you can afford it!Glenn

in the current 777 VC for FS2002, i find it very hard to read the instruments, if i had a 21" monitor would i be able to read it clearly?

Clayton,<It depends on what resolution you set. 800*600 on a 21" will be just as unreadable as 800*600 on a 17". Bigger but still fuzzy. What the larger monitor will allow is higher resolutions providing your graphics card can supply them and that the monitor can support them and deliver a flicker-free image.Make sure the monitor can process 1280*960 or 1600*1200 at 85Hz. The graphics card certainly can but not all monitors are the same quality. On my 19" I run at 1600*1200 and the image is pin-sharp even though it's a CRT - not TFT.Cheers,

Just as a follow-up to my previous post here are two screen grabs (767PIC) showing the same part of the panel at two different resolutions. The first was taken at 1024*768, the second at 1600*1200. The difference is very clear.http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23476.jpghttp://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23477.jpgCheers,

Hi Clayton,I can't attach a whole screen dump as forum has limitations on file sizes. I don't have the VC on the 777 so instead I've taken shots of parts of the PMDG737 VC which may help you decide. You should be aware that virtual cockpits are never as sharp as 2D ones. These images don't really do the higher resolution justice. If you want me to send you full screen grabs via e-mail let me know. There's no such thing as a 17" or 19" screen shot. It all depends on the resolution of the screen - not its size. A 1024*768 image will look exactly as sharp on a 15" as a 21", size excepted. The 4 attached shots show the difference between 1024*768 (first two) and 1600*1200 (second pair).http://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23614.jpghttp://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23615.jpghttp://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23616.jpghttp://forums.avsim.com/user_files/23617.jpgHope that helps!
