Loss of sound that was previously OK

Featured Replies

Hi, all'I searched the forum re: sound loss and couldn't find a fix.I have lost all sound in RC3.1; it was working perfectly before. I reinstalled RC and same problem.Only change I made was that I cleaned up my HD recently and I'm wondering if anyone knows if I may have OK'd a file deletion that was needed for RC sound.I checked all the directories and the wav's are all there;(btw, if I try to play the wav's with Windows Media player an error says 'class not registered'--don't know if that's relevant)thanks for any thoughts

where is rcv31.exe? is the winwood in the same directory? how many files are in each winwood directory?jd

jd,rc31.exe is in RCV30, as is the winwood folder; each winwood has 1028 or 1134 files ( I didn't count them all, but I haven't messed with them either--and I did a fresh install after removing RC3.1 and then a defrag). The only other thought: I did the disk clean-up because I'm low on space, specifically 1.22 gig left on a 16 gig HD. Do you think that could be the problem?thanks,Joe

if you go to the options page of rc, and click the speaker icon, do you hear the aircraft name/callsign pronounced?what is your sound card?

jd,sorry, I should have added that the speaker-icon-test was the first one I performed and got no sound.I have a Turtle Beach Montego.Joe

the turtle beach card is fine. i used to have a machine that had that in there.if the speaker icon isn't working, that is an indication of missing or misplaced wav files.i'm assuming you can hear sounds normally. windows events, etc.i think you said rcv31.exe was being executed out of the rcv30 directorythere should be a rcv30winwood directory, which contains a bunch of sub directories, including 0, 1, 2, etchow many files are in rcv30winwood0?

John,All other system-associated sounds, including all FS2000 and Active Sky thunder/rain sounds are fine.winwood/0 has 1028 files; o foldersthanks,joe

the speaker icon plays the wavs from the path that rcv31.exe is in, so it would bercv31path(whatever it is)winwood0maybe the best thing to do, is to uninstall and install 3.0 again, and download and install the 3.1 upgrade zip filesjd

John,Thanks for all the attention you've given this. I try your suggestions and see what happens. If all else fails I have another Dell 8200 with 3.0 installed and I'll just upgrade that one--Should I email for a key for 3.0? I think that I probably erased it when I installed the 3.1 from the CD that I tested for you. Thanks, again,Joe

John,Just an FYI: Did as you suggested and still no sound!!I think that I'll switch everything over to my Dell 8xxx and start fresh. I must have aquired a virus or something that is specifically messing with RC.If you have any other thoughts let me know, otherwise I won't tie up the forum anymore unless I stumble upon a fix. Thanks,Joe

John,One other thought:When I double click all of my FS wav files window media player opens and plays them; when I do that with RC wavs, I get a 'class not registered' error and no sound. I cna't help but think that this may be related to my problem.Any thoughts/thanks/ joe

Joe,RC uses MS ADPCM format. If you don't have that then you're missing a serious standard CODEC. I suggest looking into reinstalling Media Player, or going to the MS DL site and pick up the basic CODECs, or if you're running XP, boot from the install CD and run repair. Or you can go into Control Panel/Multimedia/Devices/Audio Compression Codecs (98) or Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Hardware/Audio Codecs (XP) and see what codecs you have installed.

Scott,You were right on: when I cleaned up my HD, I messed with the 'Windows Setup' tab of 'ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS' and must have dumped some decoders.I cannot thank you and John enough for the support.
